My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

Тошной стала мне моя жизнь! Жалобам моим волю дам, в горечи души моей заговорю!

I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.

Скажу Богу: не засуживай меня, открой, за что Ты на меня напал?

Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

Что за выгода Тебе неправду творить, отвергать творение Твоих же рук, а над умыслом злых являть свет?

Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?

Разве плотские очи у Тебя и разве зришь Ты, как зрит человек;

Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days,

разве дни Твои, как человека дни, и, как дни мужа, — годы Твои, —

That thou inquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?

что Ты допытываешься о моей вине и о грехе моем чинишь сыск,

Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.

хоть ведомо Тебе, что невинен я? А из Твоих рук не избавит никто.

Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

Твои руки дали мне вид; а после Ты обернулся — и меня сгубил!

Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

Вспомни, что из глины Ты создал меня а ныне возвращаешь меня в прах!

Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

Не Ты ли вылил меня, как молоко, и, как творог, сгустил меня?

Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

Кожей и мясом Ты облек меня, костями и жилами скрепил Ты меня,

Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

жизнь и милость даровал Ты мне, и я дышал, Тобою храним.

And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.

Но вот что скрывал Ты в сердце Твоем знаю, вот что у Тебя на уме:

If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

Ты выследишь меня, чуть погрешу, и больше мне чистым не быть!

If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;

Если виновен я — горе мне! А если прав я — мне головы не поднять; я насыщен стыдом и горем пьян.

For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.

Чуть ободрюсь, Ты травишь меня, как льва, противу меня дивно велик:

Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

послуха за послухом выводишь Ты, умножаешь ярость Твою, и новая рать на меня идет!

Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!

Зачем Ты из чрева вывел меня? Пускай бы я умер, не увиден никем,

I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

как будто и не было меня, из утробы в могилу перенесен!

Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

Вот, недолги дни мои! Отступи ж от меня и дай вздохнуть,

Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

прежде, чем без возврата уйду в страну, где мрак и смертная тень,

A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

где темная темень и мерцает мгла, в ту неустроенную страну, где даже и самый свет — тьма».
