Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.

И обрати́лся я и уви́дел вся́кие угнете́ния, каки́е де́лаются под со́лнцем: и вот слёзы угнетённых, а утеши́теля у них нет; и в руке́ угнета́ющих их — си́ла, а утеши́теля у них нет.

And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive.

И ублажи́л я мёртвых, кото́рые давно́ у́мерли, бо́лее живы́х, кото́рые живу́т досе́ле;

But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

а блаже́ннее их обо́их тот, кто ещё не существова́л, кто не вида́л злых дел, каки́е де́лаются под со́лнцем.

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanitya and a striving after wind.

Ви́дел я та́кже, что вся́кий труд и вся́кий успе́х в дела́х произво́дят взаи́мную ме́жду людьми́ за́висть. И э́то — суета́ и томле́ние ду́ха!

The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh.

Глу́пый сиди́т, сложи́в свои́ ру́ки, и съеда́ет плоть свою́.

Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.

Лу́чше горсть с поко́ем, не́жели при́горшни с трудо́м и томле́нием ду́ха.

Again, I saw vanity under the sun:

И обрати́лся я и уви́дел ещё суету́ под со́лнцем;

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, “For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

челове́к одино́кий, и друго́го нет; ни сы́на, ни бра́та нет у него́; а всем труда́м его́ нет конца́, и глаз его́ не насыща́ется бога́тством. «Для кого́ же я тружу́сь и лиша́ю ду́шу мою́ бла́га?» И э́то — суета́ и недо́брое де́ло!

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.

Двои́м лу́чше, не́жели одному́; потому́ что у них есть до́брое вознагражде́ние в труде́ их:

For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!

и́бо е́сли упадёт оди́н, то друго́й подни́мет това́рища своего́. Но го́ре одному́, когда́ упадёт, а друго́го нет, кото́рый подня́л бы его́.

Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?

Та́кже, е́сли лежа́т дво́е, то тепло́ им; а одному́ как согре́ться?

And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him — a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

И е́сли ста́нет преодолева́ть кто-ли́бо одного́, то дво́е устоя́т про́тив него́: и ни́тка, втро́е скру́ченная, не ско́ро порвётся.

Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice.

Лу́чше бе́дный, но у́мный ю́ноша, не́жели ста́рый, но неразу́мный царь, кото́рый не уме́ет принима́ть сове́ты;

For he went from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor.

и́бо тот из темни́цы вы́йдет на ца́рство, хотя́ роди́лся в ца́рстве своём бе́дным.

I saw all the living who move about under the sun, along with thatb youth who was to stand in the king’sc place.

Ви́дел я всех живу́щих, кото́рые хо́дят под со́лнцем, с э́тим други́м ю́ношею, кото́рый займёт ме́сто того́.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Не́ бы́ло числа́ всему́ наро́ду, кото́рый был пе́ред ним, хотя́ поздне́йшие не пора́дуются им. И э́то — суета́ и томле́ние ду́ха!
