Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters,a we don’t really need to write you.

А҆ ѡ҆ лѣ́тѣхъ и҆ ѡ҆ временѣ́хъ, бра́тїе, не тре́бѣ є҆́сть ва́мъ писа́ти,

For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night.

са́ми бо вы̀ и҆звѣ́стнѡ вѣ́сте, ѩ҆́кѡ де́нь гд҇ень, ѩ҆́коже та́ть въ нощѝ, та́кѡ прїи́детъ.

When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

Є҆гда́ бо рекѹ́тъ: ми́ръ и҆ ѹ҆твержде́нїе, тогда̀ внеза́пѹ нападе́тъ на ни́хъ всегѹби́телство, ѩ҆́коже болѣ́знь во чре́вѣ и҆мѹ́щей, и҆ не и҆́мѹтъ и҆збѣжа́ти.

But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief.b

Вы́ же, бра́тїе, нѣ́сте во тмѣ̀, да де́нь ва́съ ѩ҆́коже та́ть пости́гнетъ:

For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night.

вси́ бо вы̀ сы́нове свѣ́та є҆стѐ: и҆ сы́нове днѐ: нѣ́смы но́щи, нижѐ тмы̀.

So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.

Тѣ́мже ѹ҆̀бо да не спи́мъ, ѩ҆́коже и҆ про́чїи, но да бо́дрствѹимъ и҆ трезви́мсѧ.

Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk.

Спѧ́щїи бо, въ нощѝ спѧ́тъ, и҆ ѹ҆пива́ющїисѧ въ нощѝ ѹ҆пива́ютсѧ.

But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.

Мы́ же, сы́нове сѹ́ще днѐ, да трезви́мсѧ, ѡ҆болкше́сѧ въ броню̀ вѣ́ры и҆ любвѐ и҆ шле́мъ ѹ҆пова́нїѧ сп҇нїѧ,

For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us.

(За҄ 272.) ѩ҆́кѡ не положѝ на́съ бг҃ъ въ гнѣ́въ, но въ полѹче́нїе сп҇нїѧ гд҇емъ на́шимъ ї҆и҃съ хр҇то́мъ,

Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever.

ѹ҆ме́ршимъ за на́съ, да, а҆́ще бди́мъ, а҆́ще ли спи́мъ, кѹ́пнѡ съ ни́мъ живе́мъ.

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

Сегѡ̀ ра́ди ѹ҆тѣша́йте дрѹ́гъ дрѹ́га, и҆ созида́йте кі́йждо бли́жнѧго, ѩ҆́коже и҆ творитѐ.

Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance.

(За҄ 273.) Мо́лимъ же вы̀, бра́тїе, зна́йте трѹжда́ющихсѧ ѹ҆ ва́съ, и҆ настоѧ́телей ва́шихъ ѡ҆ гд҇ѣ, и҆ наказѹ́ющихъ вы̀,

Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.

и҆ и҆мѣ́йте и҆̀хъ по преизли́ха въ любвѝ за дѣ́ло и҆́хъ: ми́рствѹйте въ себѣ̀.

Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.

Мо́лимъ же вы̀, бра́тїе, вразѹмлѧ́йте безчи҄нныѧ, ѹ҆тѣша́йте малодѹ҄шныѧ, застѹпа́йте немощны́ѧ, долготерпи́те ко всѣ҄мъ.

See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.

Блюди́те, да никто́же ѕла̀ за ѕло̀ комѹ̀ возда́стъ: но всегда̀ до́брое гони́те и҆ дрѹ́гъ ко дрѹ́гѹ и҆ ко всѣ҄мъ.

Always be joyful.

Всегда̀ ра́дѹйтесѧ.

Never stop praying.

Непреста́ннѡ моли́тесѧ.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Ѡ҆ все́мъ благодари́те: сїѧ́ бо є҆́сть во́лѧ бж҃їѧ ѡ҆ хр҇тѣ̀ ї҆и҃сѣ въ ва́съ.

Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.

Дх҃а не ѹ҆гаша́йте.

Do not scoff at prophecies,

Про҇ро́чєствїѧ не ѹ҆ничижа́йте.

but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.

Всѧ҄ же и҆скѹша́юще, дѡ́браѧ держи́те.

Stay away from every kind of evil.

Ѿ всѧ́кїѧ ве́щи ѕлы́ѧ {ѿ всѧ́кагѡ ви́да ѕла́гѡ} ѡ҆греба́йтесѧ.

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

Са́мъ же бг҃ъ ми́ра да ѡ҆ст҃и́тъ ва́съ всесоверше́нныхъ во все́мъ: и҆ всесоверше́нъ ва́шъ дѹ́хъ и҆ дѹша̀ и҆ тѣ́ло непоро́чно въ прише́ствїе гд҇а на́шегѡ ї҆и҃са хр҇та̀ да сохрани́тсѧ.

God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.

Вѣ́ренъ призва́вый ва́съ, и҆́же и҆ сотвори́тъ.

Dear brothers and sisters, pray for us.

Бра́тїе, моли́тесѧ ѡ҆ на́съ.

Greet all the brothers and sisters with a sacred kiss.

Цѣлѹ́йте бра́тїю всю̀ лобза́нїемъ ст҃ы́мъ.

I command you in the name of the Lord to read this letter to all the brothers and sisters.

Заклина́ю вы̀ гд҇емъ, прочестѝ посла́нїе сїѐ пред̾ все́ю ст҃о́ю бра́тїею.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Блгдть гд҇а на́шегѡ ї҆и҃са хр҇та̀ съ ва́ми. А҆ми́нь.
