The Israelites had vowed at Mizpah, “We will never give our daughters in marriage to a man from the tribe of Benjamin.”

И покля́лись Израильтя́не в Масси́фе, говоря́: никто́ из нас не отда́ст до́чери свое́й сына́м Вениами́на в заму́жество.

Now the people went to Bethel and sat in the presence of God until evening, weeping loudly and bitterly.

И пришёл наро́д в дом Бо́жий, и сиде́ли там до ве́чера пред Бо́гом, и подня́ли гро́мкий вопль, и си́льно пла́кали,

“O LORD, God of Israel,” they cried out, “why has this happened in Israel? Now one of our tribes is missing from Israel!”

и сказа́ли: Го́споди, Бо́же Изра́илев! для чего́ случи́лось э́то в Изра́иле, что не ста́ло тепе́рь у Изра́иля одного́ коле́на?

Early the next morning the people built an altar and presented their burnt offerings and peace offerings on it.

На друго́й день встал наро́д поутру́, и устро́или там же́ртвенник, и вознесли́ всесожже́ния и ми́рные же́ртвы.

Then they said, “Who among the tribes of Israel did not join us at Mizpah when we held our assembly in the presence of the LORD?” At that time they had taken a solemn oath in the LORD’s presence, vowing that anyone who refused to come would be put to death.

И сказа́ли сыны́ Изра́илевы: кто не приходи́л в собра́ние пред Го́спода из всех коле́н Изра́илевых? И́бо вели́кое прокля́тие произнесено́ бы́ло на тех, кото́рые не пришли́ пред Го́спода в Масси́фу, и ска́зано бы́ло, что те пре́даны бу́дут сме́рти.

The Israelites felt sorry for their brother Benjamin and said, “Today one of the tribes of Israel has been cut off.

И сжа́лились сыны́ Изра́илевы над Вениами́ном, бра́том свои́м, и сказа́ли: ны́не отсечено́ одно́ коле́но от Изра́иля;

How can we find wives for the few who remain, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them our daughters in marriage?”

как поступи́ть нам с оста́вшимися из них каса́тельно жён, когда́ мы покля́лись Го́сподом не дава́ть им жён из дочере́й на́ших?

So they asked, “Who among the tribes of Israel did not join us at Mizpah when we assembled in the presence of the LORD?” And they discovered that no one from Jabesh-gilead had attended the assembly.

И сказа́ли: нет ли кого́ из коле́н Изра́илевых, кто не приходи́л пред Го́спода в Масси́фу? И оказа́лось, что из Иави́са Галаа́дского никто́ не приходи́л пред Го́спода в стан на собра́ние.

For after they counted all the people, no one from Jabesh-gilead was present.

И осмо́трен наро́д, и вот, не́ бы́ло там ни одного́ из жи́телей Иави́са Галаа́дского.

So the assembly sent 12,000 of their best warriors to Jabesh-gilead with orders to kill everyone there, including women and children.

И посла́ло туда́ о́бщество двена́дцать ты́сяч челове́к, муже́й си́льных, и да́ли им приказа́ние, говоря́: иди́те и порази́те жи́телей Иави́са Галаа́дского мечо́м, и же́нщин и дете́й;

“This is what you are to do,” they said. “Completely destroya all the males and every woman who is not a virgin.”

и вот что сде́лайте: вся́кого мужчи́ну и вся́кую же́нщину, позна́вшую ло́же му́жеское, преда́йте закля́тию.

Among the residents of Jabesh-gilead they found 400 young virgins who had never slept with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.

И нашли́ они́ ме́жду жи́телями Иави́са Галаа́дского четы́реста деви́ц, не позна́вших ло́жа му́жеского, и привели́ их в стан в Сило́м, что в земле́ Ханаа́нской.

The Israelite assembly sent a peace delegation to the remaining people of Benjamin who were living at the rock of Rimmon.

И посла́ло всё о́бщество переговори́ть с сына́ми Вениами́на, бы́вшими в скале́ Риммо́не, и объяви́ло им мир.

Then the men of Benjamin returned to their homes, and the 400 women of Jabesh-gilead who had been spared were given to them as wives. But there were not enough women for all of them.

Тогда́ возврати́лись сыны́ Вениами́на, и да́ли им Израильтя́не жён, кото́рых оста́вили в живы́х из же́нщин Иави́са Галаа́дского; но оказа́лось, что э́того бы́ло недоста́точно.

The people felt sorry for Benjamin because the LORD had made this gap among the tribes of Israel.

Наро́д же сожале́л о Вениами́не, что Госпо́дь не сохрани́л це́лости коле́н Изра́илевых.

So the elders of the assembly asked, “How can we find wives for the few who remain, since the women of the tribe of Benjamin are dead?

И сказа́ли старе́йшины о́бщества: что нам де́лать с оста́вшимися каса́тельно жён, и́бо истреблены́ же́нщины у Вениами́на?

There must be heirs for the survivors so that an entire tribe of Israel is not wiped out.

И сказа́ли: насле́дственная земля́ пусть остаётся уцеле́вшим сына́м Вениами́на, что́бы не исче́зло коле́но от Изра́иля;

But we cannot give them our own daughters in marriage because we have sworn with a solemn oath that anyone who does this will fall under God’s curse.”

но мы не мо́жем дать им жён из дочере́й на́ших; и́бо сыны́ Изра́илевы покля́лись, говоря́: «про́клят, кто даст жену́ Вениами́ну».

Then they thought of the annual festival of the LORD held in Shiloh, south of Lebonah and north of Bethel, along the east side of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem.

И сказа́ли: вот, ка́ждый год быва́ет пра́здник Госпо́день в Сило́ме, кото́рый на се́вер от Вефи́ля и на восто́к от доро́ги, веду́щей от Вефи́ля в Сихе́м, и на юг от Лево́ны.

They told the men of Benjamin who still needed wives, “Go and hide in the vineyards.

И приказа́ли сына́м Вениами́на и сказа́ли: пойди́те и зася́дьте в виногра́дниках,

When you see the young women of Shiloh come out for their dances, rush out from the vineyards, and each of you can take one of them home to the land of Benjamin to be your wife!

и смотри́те, когда́ вы́йдут деви́цы Сило́мские пляса́ть в хорово́дах, тогда́ вы́йдите из виногра́дников и схвати́те себе́ ка́ждый жену́ из деви́ц Сило́мских и иди́те в зе́млю Вениами́нову;

And when their fathers and brothers come to us in protest, we will tell them, ‘Please be sympathetic. Let them have your daughters, for we didn’t find wives for all of them when we destroyed Jabesh-gilead. And you are not guilty of breaking the vow since you did not actually give your daughters to them in marriage.’”

и когда́ приду́т отцы́ их и́ли бра́тья их с жа́лобою к нам, мы ска́жем им: «прости́те нас за них, и́бо мы не взя́ли для ка́ждого из них жены́ на войне́, и вы не да́ли им; тепе́рь вы вино́вны».

So the men of Benjamin did as they were told. Each man caught one of the women as she danced in the celebration and carried her off to be his wife. They returned to their own land, and they rebuilt their towns and lived in them.

Сыны́ Вениами́на так и сде́лали, и взя́ли жён по числу́ своему́ из бы́вших в хорово́де, кото́рых они́ похи́тили, и пошли́ и возврати́лись в уде́л свой, и постро́или города́ и ста́ли жить в них.

Then the people of Israel departed by tribes and families, and they returned to their own homes.

В то же вре́мя Израильтя́не разошли́сь отту́да ка́ждый в коле́но своё и в пле́мя своё, и пошли́ отту́да ка́ждый в уде́л свой.

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

В те дни не́ бы́ло царя́ у Изра́иля; ка́ждый де́лал то, что ему́ каза́лось справедли́вым.
