Now Jephthah of Gilead was a great warrior. He was the son of Gilead, but his mother was a prostitute.

Иеффа́й Галаадитя́нин был челове́к хра́брый. Он был сын блудни́цы; от Галаа́да роди́лся Иеффа́й.

Gilead’s wife also had several sons, and when these half brothers grew up, they chased Jephthah off the land. “You will not get any of our father’s inheritance,” they said, “for you are the son of a prostitute.”

И жена́ Галаа́дова родила́ ему́ сынове́й. Когда́ возмужа́ли сыновья́ жены́, изгна́ли они́ Иеффа́я, сказа́в ему́: ты не насле́дник в до́ме отца́ на́шего, потому́ что ты сын друго́й же́нщины.

So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Soon he had a band of worthless rebels following him.

И убежа́л Иеффа́й от бра́тьев свои́х и жил в земле́ Тов; и собра́лись к Иеффа́ю пра́здные лю́ди и выходи́ли с ним.

At about this time, the Ammonites began their war against Israel.

Че́рез не́сколько вре́мени Аммонитя́не пошли́ войно́ю на Изра́иля.

When the Ammonites attacked, the elders of Gilead sent for Jephthah in the land of Tob.

Во вре́мя войны́ Аммонитя́н с Израильтя́нами пришли́ старе́йшины Галаа́дские взять Иеффа́я из земли́ Тов

The elders said, “Come and be our commander! Help us fight the Ammonites!”

и сказа́ли Иеффа́ю: приди́, будь у нас вождём, и срази́мся с Аммонитя́нами.

But Jephthah said to them, “Aren’t you the ones who hated me and drove me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now when you’re in trouble?”

Иеффа́й сказа́л старе́йшинам Галаа́дским: не вы ли возненави́дели меня́ и вы́гнали из до́ма отца́ моего́? заче́м же пришли́ ко мне ны́не, когда́ вы в беде́?

“Because we need you,” the elders replied. “If you lead us in battle against the Ammonites, we will make you ruler over all the people of Gilead.”

Старе́йшины Галаа́дские сказа́ли Иеффа́ю: для того́ мы тепе́рь пришли́ к тебе́, что́бы ты пошёл с на́ми и срази́лся с Аммонитя́нами и был у нас нача́льником всех жи́телей Галаа́дских.

Jephthah said to the elders, “Let me get this straight. If I come with you and if the LORD gives me victory over the Ammonites, will you really make me ruler over all the people?”

И сказа́л Иеффа́й старе́йшинам Галаа́дским: е́сли вы возврати́те меня́, что́бы срази́ться с Аммонитя́нами, и Госпо́дь преда́ст мне их, то оста́нусь ли я у вас нача́льником?

“The LORD is our witness,” the elders replied. “We promise to do whatever you say.”

Старе́йшины Галаа́дские сказа́ли Иеффа́ю: Госпо́дь да бу́дет свиде́телем ме́жду на́ми, что мы сде́лаем по сло́ву твоему́!

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their ruler and commander of the army. At Mizpah, in the presence of the LORD, Jephthah repeated what he had said to the elders.

И пошёл Иеффа́й со старе́йшинами Галаа́дскими, и наро́д поста́вил его́ над собо́ю нача́льником и вождём, и Иеффа́й произнёс все слова́ свои́ пред лицо́м Го́спода в Масси́фе.

Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of Ammon, asking, “Why have you come out to fight against my land?”

И посла́л Иеффа́й посло́в к царю́ Аммони́тскому сказа́ть: что тебе́ до меня́, что ты пришёл ко мне воева́ть на земле́ мое́й?

The king of Ammon answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When the Israelites came out of Egypt, they stole my land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River and all the way to the Jordan. Now then, give back the land peaceably.”

Царь Аммони́тский сказа́л посла́м Иеффа́я: Изра́иль, когда́ шёл из Еги́пта, взял зе́млю мою́ от Арно́на до Иаво́ка и Иорда́на; ита́к, возврати́ мне её с ми́ром.

Jephthah sent this message back to the Ammonite king:

Иеффа́й в друго́й раз посла́л посло́в к царю́ Аммони́тскому

“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not steal any land from Moab or Ammon.

сказа́ть ему́: так говори́т Иеффа́й: Изра́иль не взял земли́ Моави́тской и земли́ Аммони́тской;

When the people of Israel arrived at Kadesh on their journey from Egypt after crossing the Red Sea,a

и́бо, когда́ шли из Еги́пта, Изра́иль пошёл в пусты́ню к Че́рмному мо́рю и пришёл в Каде́с;

they sent messengers to the king of Edom asking for permission to pass through his land. But their request was denied. Then they asked the king of Moab for similar permission, but he wouldn’t let them pass through either. So the people of Israel stayed in Kadesh.

отту́да посла́л Изра́иль посло́в к царю́ Едо́мскому сказа́ть: «позво́ль мне пройти́ землёю твое́ю»; но царь Едо́мский не послу́шал; и к царю́ Моави́тскому он посыла́л, но и тот не согласи́лся; посему́ Изра́иль остава́лся в Каде́се.

“Finally, they went around Edom and Moab through the wilderness. They traveled along Moab’s eastern border and camped on the other side of the Arnon River. But they never once crossed the Arnon River into Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

И пошёл пусты́нею, и минова́л зе́млю Едо́мскую и зе́млю Моави́тскую, и, придя́ к восто́чному преде́лу земли́ Моави́тской, расположи́лся ста́ном за Арно́ном; но не входи́л в преде́лы Моави́тские, и́бо Арно́н есть преде́л Моа́ва.

“Then Israel sent messengers to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled from Heshbon, asking for permission to cross through his land to get to their destination.

И посла́л Изра́иль посло́в к Сиго́ну, царю́ Аморре́йскому, царю́ Есево́нскому, и сказа́л ему́ Изра́иль: «позво́ль нам пройти́ землёю твое́ю в своё ме́сто».

But King Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his land. Instead, he mobilized his army at Jahaz and attacked them.

Но Сиго́н не согласи́лся пропусти́ть Изра́иля че́рез преде́лы свои́, и собра́л Сиго́н весь наро́д свой, и расположи́лся ста́ном в Иаа́це, и срази́лся с Изра́илем.

But the LORD, the God of Israel, gave his people victory over King Sihon. So Israel took control of all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that region,

И преда́л Госпо́дь, Бог Изра́илев, Сиго́на и весь наро́д его́ в ру́ки Изра́илю, и он поби́л их; и получи́л Изра́иль в насле́дие всю зе́млю Аморре́я, жи́вшего в земле́ той;

from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, and from the eastern wilderness to the Jordan.

и получи́ли они́ в насле́дие все преде́лы Аморре́я от Арно́на до Иаво́ка и от пусты́ни до Иорда́на.

“So you see, it was the LORD, the God of Israel, who took away the land from the Amorites and gave it to Israel. Why, then, should we give it back to you?

Ита́к, Госпо́дь, Бог Изра́илев, изгна́л Аморре́я от лица́ наро́да Своего́ Изра́иля, а ты хо́чешь взять его́ насле́дие?

You keep whatever your god Chemosh gives you, and we will keep whatever the LORD our God gives us.

Не владе́ешь ли ты тем, что дал тебе́ Хамо́с, бог твой? И мы владе́ем всем тем, что дал нам в насле́дие Госпо́дь, Бог наш.

Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he try to make a case against Israel for disputed land? Did he go to war against them?

Ра́зве ты лу́чше Вала́ка, сы́на Сепфо́рова, царя́ Моави́тского? Ссо́рился ли он с Изра́илем, и́ли воева́л ли с ни́ми?

“Israel has been living here for 300 years, inhabiting Heshbon and its surrounding settlements, all the way to Aroer and its settlements, and in all the towns along the Arnon River. Why have you made no effort to recover it before now?

Изра́иль уже́ живёт три́ста лет в Есево́не и в зави́сящих от него́ города́х, в Арое́ре и зави́сящих от него́ города́х, и во всех города́х, кото́рые близ Арно́на; для чего́ вы в то вре́мя не отнима́ли их?

Therefore, I have not sinned against you. Rather, you have wronged me by attacking me. Let the LORD, who is judge, decide today which of us is right — Israel or Ammon.”

А я не вино́вен пред тобо́ю, и ты де́лаешь мне зло, вы́ступив про́тив меня́ войно́ю. Госпо́дь Судия́ да бу́дет ны́не судьёю ме́жду сына́ми Изра́иля и ме́жду Аммонитя́нами!

But the king of Ammon paid no attention to Jephthah’s message.

Но царь Аммони́тский не послу́шал слов Иеффа́я, с кото́рыми он посыла́л к нему́.

At that time the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and from there he led an army against the Ammonites.

И был на Иеффа́е Дух Госпо́день, и прошёл он Галаа́д и Мана́ссию, и прошёл Масси́фу Галаа́дскую, и из Масси́фы Галаа́дской пошёл к Аммонитя́нам.

And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD. He said, “If you give me victory over the Ammonites,

И дал Иеффа́й обе́т Го́споду и сказа́л: е́сли Ты преда́шь Аммонитя́н в ру́ки мои́,

I will give to the LORD whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”

то по возвраще́нии моём с ми́ром от Аммонитя́н, что вы́йдет из воро́т до́ма моего́ навстре́чу мне, бу́дет Го́споду, и вознесу́ сие́ на всесожже́ние.

So Jephthah led his army against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave him victory.

И пришёл Иеффа́й к Аммонитя́нам — срази́ться с ни́ми, и преда́л их Госпо́дь в ру́ки его́;

He crushed the Ammonites, devastating about twenty towns from Aroer to an area near Minnith and as far away as Abel-keramim. In this way Israel defeated the Ammonites.

и порази́л их пораже́нием весьма́ вели́ким, от Арое́ра до Мини́фа два́дцать городо́в, и до Аве́ль-Керами́ма, и смири́лись Аммонитя́не пред сына́ми Изра́илевыми.

When Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, playing on a tambourine and dancing for joy. She was his one and only child; he had no other sons or daughters.

И пришёл Иеффа́й в Масси́фу в дом свой, и вот, дочь его́ выхо́дит навстре́чу ему́ с тимпа́нами и ли́ками: она́ была́ у него́ то́лько одна́, и не́ бы́ло у него́ ещё ни сы́на, ни до́чери.

When he saw her, he tore his clothes in anguish. “Oh, my daughter!” he cried out. “You have completely destroyed me! You’ve brought disaster on me! For I have made a vow to the LORD, and I cannot take it back.”

Когда́ он уви́дел её, разодра́л оде́жду свою́ и сказа́л: ах, дочь моя́! ты срази́ла меня́; и ты в числе́ наруши́телей поко́я моего́! я отве́рз о тебе́ уста́ мои́ пред Го́сподом и не могу́ отре́чься.

And she said, “Father, if you have made a vow to the LORD, you must do to me what you have vowed, for the LORD has given you a great victory over your enemies, the Ammonites.

Она́ сказа́ла ему́: оте́ц мой! ты отве́рз уста́ твои́ пред Го́сподом — и де́лай со мно́ю то, что произнесли́ уста́ твои́, когда́ Госпо́дь соверши́л че́рез тебя́ отмще́ние врага́м твои́м Аммонитя́нам.

But first let me do this one thing: Let me go up and roam in the hills and weep with my friends for two months, because I will die a virgin.”

И сказа́ла отцу́ своему́: сде́лай мне то́лько вот что: отпусти́ меня́ на два ме́сяца; я пойду́, взойду́ на го́ры и опла́чу де́вство моё с подру́гами мои́ми.

“You may go,” Jephthah said. And he sent her away for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never have children.

Он сказа́л: пойди́. И отпусти́л её на два ме́сяца. Она́ пошла́ с подру́гами свои́ми и опла́кивала де́вство своё в гора́х.

When she returned home, her father kept the vow he had made, and she died a virgin. So it has become a custom in Israel

По проше́ствии двух ме́сяцев она́ возврати́лась к отцу́ своему́, и он соверши́л над не́ю обе́т свой, кото́рый дал, и она́ не позна́ла му́жа. И вошло́ в обы́чай у Изра́иля,

for young Israelite women to go away for four days each year to lament the fate of Jephthah’s daughter.

что ежего́дно до́чери Изра́илевы ходи́ли опла́кивать дочь Иеффа́я Галаадитя́нина, четы́ре дня в году́.
