Then the people of Ephraim asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us this way? Why didn’t you send for us when you first went out to fight the Midianites?” And they argued heatedly with Gideon.

И сказа́ли ему́ Ефремля́не: заче́м ты э́то сде́лал, что не позва́л нас, когда́ шёл воева́ть с Мадианитя́нами? И си́льно ссо́рились с ним.

But Gideon replied, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t even the leftover grapes of Ephraim’s harvest better than the entire crop of my little clan of Abiezer?

Гедео́н отвеча́л им: сде́лал ли я что тако́е, как вы ны́не? Не счастли́вее ли Ефре́м добира́л виногра́д, не́жели Авиезе́р обира́л?

God gave you victory over Oreb and Zeeb, the commanders of the Midianite army. What have I accomplished compared to that?” When the men of Ephraim heard Gideon’s answer, their anger subsided.

В ва́ши ру́ки преда́л Бог князе́й Мадиа́мских Ори́ва и Зи́ва, и что мог сде́лать я тако́е, как вы? Тогда́ успоко́ился дух их про́тив него́, когда́ сказа́л он им таки́е слова́.

Gideon then crossed the Jordan River with his 300 men, and though exhausted, they continued to chase the enemy.

И пришёл Гедео́н к Иорда́ну, перешёл сам и три́ста челове́к, бы́вшие с ним. Они́ бы́ли утомлены́, пресле́дуя враго́в.

When they reached Succoth, Gideon asked the leaders of the town, “Please give my warriors some food. They are very tired. I am chasing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

И сказа́л он жи́телям Сокхо́фа: да́йте хле́ба наро́ду, кото́рый идёт за мно́ю; они́ утоми́лись, а я пресле́дую Зеве́я и Салма́на, царе́й Мадиа́мских.

But the officials of Succoth replied, “Catch Zebah and Zalmunna first, and then we will feed your army.”

Князья́ Сокхо́фа сказа́ли: ра́зве рука́ Зеве́я и Салма́на уже́ в твое́й руке́, что́бы нам во́йску твоему́ дава́ть хлеб?

So Gideon said, “After the LORD gives me victory over Zebah and Zalmunna, I will return and tear your flesh with the thorns and briers from the wilderness.”

И сказа́л Гедео́н: за э́то, когда́ преда́ст Госпо́дь Зеве́я и Салма́на в ру́ки мои́, я растерза́ю те́ло ва́ше терно́вником пусты́нным и молоти́льными зубча́тыми до́сками.

From there Gideon went up to Peniela and again asked for food, but he got the same answer.

Отту́да пошёл он в Пенуэ́л и то же сказа́л жи́телям его́, и жи́тели Пенуэ́ла отвеча́ли ему́ то же, что отвеча́ли жи́тели Сокхо́фа.

So he said to the people of Peniel, “After I return in victory, I will tear down this tower.”

Он сказа́л и жи́телям Пенуэ́ла: когда́ я возвращу́сь в ми́ре, разру́шу ба́шню сию́.

By this time Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with about 15,000 warriors — all that remained of the allied armies of the east, for 120,000 had already been killed.

Зеве́й же и Салма́н бы́ли в Карко́ре и с ни́ми их ополче́ние до пятна́дцати ты́сяч, всё, что оста́лось из всего́ ополче́ния жи́телей восто́ка; па́ло же сто два́дцать ты́сяч челове́к, обнажа́ющих меч.

Gideon circled around by the caravan route east of Nobah and Jogbehah, taking the Midianite army by surprise.

Гедео́н пошёл к живу́щим в шатра́х на восто́к от Но́вы и Иогбе́ги и порази́л стан, когда́ стан стоя́л беспе́чно.

Zebah and Zalmunna, the two Midianite kings, fled, but Gideon chased them down and captured all their warriors.

Зеве́й и Салма́н побежа́ли; он погна́лся за ни́ми и схвати́л обо́их царе́й Мадиа́мских, Зеве́я и Салма́на, и весь стан привёл в замеша́тельство.

After this, Gideon returned from the battle by way of Heres Pass.

И возврати́лся Гедео́н, сын Иоа́са, с войны́ от возвы́шенности Хере́са.

There he captured a young man from Succoth and demanded that he write down the names of all the seventy-seven officials and elders in the town.

И захвати́л ю́ношу из жи́телей Сокхо́фа и вы́спросил у него́; и он написа́л ему́ князе́й и старе́йшин Сокхо́фских се́мьдесят семь челове́к.

Gideon then returned to Succoth and said to the leaders, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna. When we were here before, you taunted me, saying, ‘Catch Zebah and Zalmunna first, and then we will feed your exhausted army.’”

И пришёл он к жи́телям Сокхо́фским, и сказа́л: вот Зеве́й и Салма́н, за кото́рых вы посмея́лись на́до мно́ю, говоря́: «ра́зве рука́ Зеве́я и Салма́на уже́ в твое́й руке́, что́бы нам дава́ть хлеб утоми́вшимся лю́дям твои́м?»

Then Gideon took the elders of the town and taught them a lesson, punishing them with thorns and briers from the wilderness.

И взял старе́йшин го́рода и терно́вник пусты́нный и зубча́тые молоти́льные до́ски и наказа́л и́ми жи́телей Сокхо́фа;

He also tore down the tower of Peniel and killed all the men in the town.

и ба́шню Пенуэ́льскую разру́шил, и переби́л жи́телей го́рода.

Then Gideon asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “The men you killed at Tabor — what were they like?” “Like you,” they replied. “They all had the look of a king’s son.”

И сказа́л Зеве́ю и Салма́ну: каковы́ бы́ли те, кото́рых вы уби́ли на Фаво́ре? Они́ сказа́ли: они́ бы́ли таки́е, как ты, ка́ждый име́л вид сыно́в ца́рских.

“They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother!” Gideon exclaimed. “As surely as the LORD lives, I wouldn’t kill you if you hadn’t killed them.”

Гедео́н сказа́л: э́то бы́ли бра́тья мои́, сыны́ ма́тери мое́й. Жив Госпо́дь! е́сли бы вы оста́вили их в живы́х, я не уби́л бы вас.

Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, for he was only a boy and was afraid.

И сказа́л Иефе́ру, пе́рвенцу своему́: встань, убе́й их. Но ю́ноша не извлёк меча́ своего́, потому́ что боя́лся, так как был ещё мо́лод.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said to Gideon, “Be a man! Kill us yourself!” So Gideon killed them both and took the royal ornaments from the necks of their camels.

И сказа́ли Зеве́й и Салма́н: встань сам и порази́ нас, потому́ что по челове́ку и си́ла его́. И встал Гедео́н, и уби́л Зеве́я и Салма́на, и взял пря́жки, бы́вшие на ше́ях верблю́дов их.

Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Be our ruler! You and your son and your grandson will be our rulers, for you have rescued us from Midian.”

И сказа́ли Израильтя́не Гедео́ну: владе́й на́ми ты и сын твой и сын сы́на твоего́, и́бо ты спас нас из руки́ Мадианитя́н.

But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The LORD will rule over you!

Гедео́н сказа́л им: ни я не бу́ду владе́ть ва́ми, ни мой сын не бу́дет владе́ть ва́ми; Госпо́дь да владе́ет ва́ми.

However, I do have one request — that each of you give me an earring from the plunder you collected from your fallen enemies.” (The enemies, being Ishmaelites, all wore gold earrings.)

И сказа́л им Гедео́н: прошу́ у вас одного́, да́йте мне ка́ждый по серьге́ из добы́чи свое́й. (И́бо у неприя́телей мно́го бы́ло золоты́х серёг, потому́ что они́ бы́ли Измаильтя́не.)

“Gladly!” they replied. They spread out a cloak, and each one threw in a gold earring he had gathered from the plunder.

Они́ сказа́ли: дади́м. И разостла́ли оде́жду и броса́ли туда́ ка́ждый по серьге́ из добы́чи свое́й.

The weight of the gold earrings was forty-three pounds,b not including the royal ornaments and pendants, the purple clothing worn by the kings of Midian, or the chains around the necks of their camels.

Ве́су в золоты́х се́рьгах, кото́рые он вы́просил, бы́ло ты́сяча семьсо́т золоты́х си́клей, кро́ме пря́жек, пу́говиц и пурпу́ровых оде́жд, кото́рые бы́ли на царя́х Мадиа́мских, и кро́ме золоты́х цепо́чек, кото́рые бы́ли на ше́е у верблю́дов их.

Gideon made a sacred ephod from the gold and put it in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all the Israelites prostituted themselves by worshiping it, and it became a trap for Gideon and his family.

Из э́того сде́лал Гедео́н ефо́д и положи́л его́ в своём го́роде, в О́фре, и ста́ли все Израильтя́не блу́дно ходи́ть туда́ за ним, и был он се́тью Гедео́ну и всему́ до́му его́.

That is the story of how the people of Israel defeated Midian, which never recovered. Throughout the rest of Gideon’s lifetime — about forty years — there was peace in the land.

Так смири́лись Мадианитя́не пред сына́ми Изра́иля и не ста́ли уже́ поднима́ть головы́ свое́й, и поко́илась земля́ со́рок лет во дни Гедео́на.

Then Gideonc son of Joash returned home.

И пошёл Иероваа́л, сын Иоа́сов, и жил в до́ме своём.

He had seventy sons born to him, for he had many wives.

У Гедео́на бы́ло се́мьдесят сынове́й, происше́дших от чресл его́, потому́ что у него́ мно́го бы́ло жён.

He also had a concubine in Shechem, who gave birth to a son, whom he named Abimelech.

Та́кже и нало́жница, жи́вшая в Сихе́ме, родила́ ему́ сы́на, и он дал ему́ и́мя Авимеле́х.

Gideon died when he was very old, and he was buried in the grave of his father, Joash, at Ophrah in the land of the clan of Abiezer.

И у́мер Гедео́н, сын Иоа́сов, в глубо́кой ста́рости, и погребён во гро́бе отца́ своего́ Иоа́са, в О́фре Авиезе́ровой.

As soon as Gideon died, the Israelites prostituted themselves by worshiping the images of Baal, making Baal-berith their god.

Когда́ у́мер Гедео́н, сыны́ Изра́илевы опя́ть ста́ли блу́дно ходи́ть вслед Ваа́лов и поста́вили себе́ бо́гом Ваалвери́фа;

They forgot the LORD their God, who had rescued them from all their enemies surrounding them.

и не вспо́мнили сыны́ Изра́илевы Го́спода, Бо́га своего́, Кото́рый избавля́л их из руки́ всех враго́в, окружа́вших их;

Nor did they show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-baal (that is, Gideon), despite all the good he had done for Israel.

и до́му Иероваа́лову, и́ли Гедео́нову, не сде́лали ми́лости за все благодея́ния, каки́е он сде́лал Изра́илю.
