One day Gideon’sa son Abimelech went to Shechem to visit his uncles — his mother’s brothers. He said to them and to the rest of his mother’s family,

Авимеле́х, сын Иероваа́лов, пошёл в Сихе́м к бра́тьям ма́тери свое́й и говори́л им и всему́ пле́мени отца́ ма́тери свое́й, и сказа́л:

“Ask the leading citizens of Shechem whether they want to be ruled by all seventy of Gideon’s sons or by one man. And remember that I am your own flesh and blood!”

внуши́те всем жи́телям Сихе́мским: что лу́чше для вас, что́бы владе́ли ва́ми все се́мьдесят сыно́в Иероваа́ловых, и́ли что́бы владе́л оди́н? и вспо́мните, что я кость ва́ша и плоть ва́ша.

So Abimelech’s uncles gave his message to all the citizens of Shechem on his behalf. And after listening to this proposal, the people of Shechem decided in favor of Abimelech because he was their relative.

Бра́тья ма́тери его́ внуши́ли о нём все сии́ слова́ жи́телям Сихе́мским; и склони́лось се́рдце их к Авимеле́ху, и́бо говори́ли они́: он брат наш.

They gave him seventy silver coins from the temple of Baal-berith, which he used to hire some reckless troublemakers who agreed to follow him.

И да́ли ему́ се́мьдесят си́клей серебра́ из до́ма Ваалвери́фа; Авимеле́х на́нял на о́ные пра́здных и своево́льных люде́й, кото́рые и пошли́ за ним.

He went to his father’s home at Ophrah, and there, on one stone, they killed all seventy of his half brothers, the sons of Gideon.b But the youngest brother, Jotham, escaped and hid.

И пришёл он в дом отца́ своего́ в О́фру и уби́л бра́тьев свои́х, се́мьдесят сыно́в Иероваа́ловых, на одно́м ка́мне. Оста́лся то́лько Иофа́м, мла́дший сын Иероваа́лов, потому́ что скры́лся.

Then all the leading citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo called a meeting under the oak beside the pillarc at Shechem and made Abimelech their king.

И собра́лись все жи́тели Сихе́мские и весь дом Ми́лло, и пошли́ и поста́вили царём Авимеле́ха у ду́ба, что близ Сихе́ма.

When Jotham heard about this, he climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem! Listen to me if you want God to listen to you!

Когда́ рассказа́ли об э́том Иофа́му, он пошёл и стал на верши́не горы́ Гаризи́ма и, возвы́сив го́лос свой, крича́л и говори́л им: послу́шайте меня́, жи́тели Сихе́ма, и послу́шает вас Бог!

Once upon a time the trees decided to choose a king. First they said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king!’

Пошли́ не́когда дерева́ пома́зать над собо́ю царя́ и сказа́ли масли́не: ца́рствуй над на́ми.

But the olive tree refused, saying, ‘Should I quit producing the olive oil that blesses both God and people, just to wave back and forth over the trees?’

Масли́на сказа́ла им: оста́влю ли я тук мой, кото́рым че́ствуют бого́в и люде́й, и пойду́ ли скита́ться по дерева́м?

“Then they said to the fig tree, ‘You be our king!’

И сказа́ли дерева́ смоко́внице: иди́ ты, ца́рствуй над на́ми.

But the fig tree also refused, saying, ‘Should I quit producing my sweet fruit just to wave back and forth over the trees?’

Смоко́вница сказа́ла им: оста́влю ли я сла́дость мою́ и хоро́ший плод мой и пойду́ ли скита́ться по дерева́м?

“Then they said to the grapevine, ‘You be our king!’

И сказа́ли дерева́ виногра́дной лозе́: иди́ ты, ца́рствуй над на́ми.

But the grapevine also refused, saying, ‘Should I quit producing the wine that cheers both God and people, just to wave back and forth over the trees?’

Виногра́дная лоза́ сказа́ла им: оста́влю ли я сок мой, кото́рый весели́т бого́в и челове́ков, и пойду́ ли скита́ться по дерева́м?

“Then all the trees finally turned to the thornbush and said, ‘Come, you be our king!’

Наконе́ц сказа́ли все дерева́ терно́внику: иди́ ты, ца́рствуй над на́ми.

And the thornbush replied to the trees, ‘If you truly want to make me your king, come and take shelter in my shade. If not, let fire come out from me and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’”

Терно́вник сказа́л дерева́м: е́сли вы по и́стине поставля́ете меня́ царём над собо́ю, то иди́те, поко́йтесь под те́нью мое́ю; е́сли же нет, то вы́йдет ого́нь из терно́вника и пожжёт ке́дры Лива́нские.

Jotham continued, “Now make sure you have acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelech your king, and that you have done right by Gideon and all of his descendants. Have you treated him with the honor he deserves for all he accomplished?

Ита́к, смотри́те, по и́стине ли и по пра́вде ли вы поступи́ли, поста́вив Авимеле́ха царём? И хорошо́ ли вы поступи́ли с Иероваа́лом и до́мом его́, и сообра́зно ли с его́ благодея́ниями поступи́ли вы?

For he fought for you and risked his life when he rescued you from the Midianites.

За вас оте́ц мой сража́лся, не дорожи́л жи́знью свое́ю и изба́вил вас от руки́ Мадианитя́н;

But today you have revolted against my father and his descendants, killing his seventy sons on one stone. And you have chosen his slave woman’s son, Abimelech, to be your king just because he is your relative.

а вы тепе́рь восста́ли про́тив до́ма отца́ моего́, и уби́ли се́мьдесят сыно́в отца́ моего́ на одно́м ка́мне, и поста́вили царём над жи́телями Сихе́мскими Авимеле́ха, сы́на рабы́ни его́, потому́ что он брат ваш.

“If you have acted honorably and in good faith toward Gideon and his descendants today, then may you find joy in Abimelech, and may he find joy in you.

Е́сли вы ны́не по и́стине и по пра́вде поступи́ли с Иероваа́лом и до́мом его́, то ра́дуйтесь об Авимеле́хе, и он пусть ра́дуется о вас;

But if you have not acted in good faith, then may fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leading citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo; and may fire come out from the citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo and devour Abimelech!”

е́сли же нет, то да изы́дет ого́нь от Авимеле́ха и да пожжёт жи́телей Сихе́мских и весь дом Ми́лло и да изы́дет ого́нь от жи́телей Сихе́мских и от до́ма Ми́лло, и да пожжёт Авимеле́ха.

Then Jotham escaped and lived in Beer because he was afraid of his brother Abimelech.

И побежа́л Иофа́м, и убежа́л и пошёл в Беэ́р, и жил там, укрыва́ясь от бра́та своего́ Авимеле́ха.

After Abimelech had ruled over Israel for three years,

Авимеле́х же ца́рствовал над Изра́илем три го́да.

God sent a spirit that stirred up trouble between Abimelech and the leading citizens of Shechem, and they revolted.

И посла́л Бог зло́го ду́ха ме́жду Авимеле́хом и ме́жду жи́телями Сихе́ма, и не ста́ли покоря́ться жи́тели Сихе́мские Авимеле́ху,

God was punishing Abimelech for murdering Gideon’s seventy sons, and the citizens of Shechem for supporting him in this treachery of murdering his brothers.

дабы́ таки́м о́бразом соверши́лось мще́ние за се́мьдесят сыно́в Иероваа́ловых, и кровь их обрати́лась на Авимеле́ха, бра́та их, кото́рый уби́л их, и на жи́телей Сихе́мских, кото́рые подкрепи́ли ру́ки его́, чтоб уби́ть бра́тьев свои́х.

The citizens of Shechem set an ambush for Abimelech on the hilltops and robbed everyone who passed that way. But someone warned Abimelech about their plot.

Жи́тели Сихе́мские посади́ли про́тив него́ в заса́ду люде́й на верши́нах гор, кото́рые гра́били вся́кого проходя́щего ми́мо их по доро́ге. О сём донесено́ бы́ло Авимеле́ху.

One day Gaal son of Ebed moved to Shechem with his brothers and gained the confidence of the leading citizens of Shechem.

Пришёл же и Гаа́л, сын Еве́дов, с бра́тьями свои́ми в Сихе́м, и ходи́ли они́ по Сихе́му, и жи́тели Сихе́мские положи́лись на него́.

During the annual harvest festival at Shechem, held in the temple of the local god, the wine flowed freely, and everyone began cursing Abimelech.

И вы́шли в по́ле, и собира́ли виногра́д свой, и дави́ли в точи́лах, и де́лали пра́здники, ходи́ли в дом бо́га своего́, и е́ли и пи́ли, и проклина́ли Авимеле́ха.

“Who is Abimelech?” Gaal shouted. “He’s not a true son of Shechem,d so why should we be his servants? He’s merely the son of Gideon, and this Zebul is merely his deputy. Serve the true sons of Hamor, the founder of Shechem. Why should we serve Abimelech?

Гаа́л, сын Еве́дов, говори́л: кто Авимеле́х и что Сихе́м, что́бы нам служи́ть ему́? Не сын ли он Иероваа́лов, и не Зеву́л ли гла́вный нача́льник его́? Служи́те лу́чше пото́мкам Еммо́ра, отца́ Сихе́мова, а ему́ для чего́ нам служи́ть?

If I were in charge here, I would get rid of Abimelech. I would saye to him, ‘Get some soldiers, and come out and fight!’”

Е́сли бы кто дал наро́д сей в ру́ки мои́, я прогна́л бы Авимеле́ха. И ска́зано бы́ло Авимеле́ху: умно́жь во́йско твоё и выходи́.

But when Zebul, the leader of the city, heard what Gaal was saying, he was furious.

Зеву́л, нача́льник го́рода, услы́шал слова́ Гаа́ла, сы́на Еве́дова, и воспыла́л гнев его́.

He sent messengers to Abimelech in Arumah,f telling him, “Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to live in Shechem, and now they are inciting the city to rebel against you.

Он хи́трым о́бразом отправля́ет посло́в к Авимеле́ху, что́бы сказа́ть: вот, Гаа́л, сын Еве́дов, и бра́тья его́ пришли́ в Сихе́м, и вот, они́ возмуща́ют про́тив тебя́ го́род;

Come by night with an army and hide out in the fields.

ита́к, встань но́чью, ты и наро́д, находя́щийся с тобо́ю, и поста́вь заса́ду в по́ле;

In the morning, as soon as it is daylight, attack the city. When Gaal and those who are with him come out against you, you can do with them as you wish.”

поутру́ же, при восхожде́нии со́лнца, встань ра́но и приступи́ к го́роду; и когда́ он и наро́д, кото́рый у него́, вы́йдут к тебе́, тогда́ де́лай с ни́ми, что мо́жет рука́ твоя́.

So Abimelech and all his men went by night and split into four groups, stationing themselves around Shechem.

И встал но́чью Авимеле́х и весь наро́д, находи́вшийся с ним, и поста́вили в заса́ду у Сихе́ма четы́ре отря́да.

Gaal was standing at the city gates when Abimelech and his army came out of hiding.

Гаа́л, сын Еве́дов, вы́шел и стал у воро́т городски́х; и встал Авимеле́х и наро́д, бы́вший с ним, из заса́ды.

When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, there are people coming down from the hilltops!” Zebul replied, “It’s just the shadows on the hills that look like men.”

Гаа́л, уви́дев наро́д, говори́т Зеву́лу: вот, наро́д спуска́ется с верши́ны гор. А Зеву́л сказа́л ему́: тень гор тебе́ ка́жется людьми́.

But again Gaal said, “No, people are coming down from the hills.g And another group is coming down the road past the Diviners’ Oak.h”

Гаа́л опя́ть говори́л и сказа́л: вот, наро́д спуска́ется с возвы́шенности, и оди́н отря́д идёт от ду́ба Меонни́м.

Then Zebul turned on him and asked, “Now where is that big mouth of yours? Wasn’t it you that said, ‘Who is Abimelech, and why should we be his servants?’ The men you mocked are right outside the city! Go out and fight them!”

И сказа́л ему́ Зеву́л: где уста́ твои́, кото́рые говори́ли: «кто Авимеле́х, что́бы мы ста́ли служи́ть ему́?» Э́то тот наро́д, кото́рый ты пренебрега́л; выходи́ тепе́рь и срази́сь с ним.

So Gaal led the leading citizens of Shechem into battle against Abimelech.

И пошёл Гаа́л впереди́ жи́телей Сихе́мских и срази́лся с Авимеле́хом.

But Abimelech chased him, and many of Shechem’s men were wounded and fell along the road as they retreated to the city gate.

И погна́лся за ним Авимеле́х, и побежа́л он от него́, и мно́го па́ло уби́тых до са́мых воро́т го́рода.

Abimelech returned to Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem.

И оста́лся Авимеле́х в А́руме, а Гаа́ла и бра́тьев его́ Зеву́л вы́гнал, чтоб они́ не жи́ли в Сихе́ме.

The next day the people of Shechem went out into the fields to battle. When Abimelech heard about it,

На друго́й день вы́шел наро́д в по́ле, и донесли́ о сём Авимеле́ху.

he divided his men into three groups and set an ambush in the fields. When Abimelech saw the people coming out of the city, he and his men jumped up from their hiding places and attacked them.

Он взял свой наро́д и раздели́л его́ на три отря́да и поста́вил в заса́ду в по́ле. И, уви́дев, что наро́д вы́шел из го́рода, восста́л на них и поби́л их.

Abimelech and his group stormed the city gate to keep the men of Shechem from getting back in, while Abimelech’s other two groups cut them down in the fields.

Ме́жду те́м как Авимеле́х и отря́ды, бы́вшие с ним, приступи́ли и ста́ли у воро́т городски́х, други́е два отря́да напа́ли на всех, бы́вших в по́ле, и убива́ли их.

The battle went on all day before Abimelech finally captured the city. He killed the people, leveled the city, and scattered salt all over the ground.

И сража́лся Авимеле́х с го́родом весь тот день, и взял го́род, и поби́л наро́д, бы́вший в нём, и разру́шил го́род и засе́ял его́ со́лью.

When the leading citizens who lived in the tower of Shechem heard what had happened, they ran and hid in the temple of Baal-berith.i

Услы́шав об э́том, все, бы́вшие в ба́шне Сихе́мской, ушли́ в ба́шню ка́пища Ваа́л-Вери́фа.

Someone reported to Abimelech that the citizens had gathered in the temple,

Авимеле́ху донесено́, что собра́лись туда́ все бы́вшие в ба́шне Сихе́мской.

so he led his forces to Mount Zalmon. He took an ax and chopped some branches from a tree, then put them on his shoulder. “Quick, do as I have done!” he told his men.

И пошёл Авимеле́х на го́ру Селмо́н, сам и весь наро́д, бы́вший с ним, и взял Авимеле́х топоры́ с собо́ю и наруби́л су́чьев древе́сных, и положи́л на пле́чи свои́, и сказа́л наро́ду, бы́вшему с ним: вы ви́дели, что я де́лал; скоре́е де́лайте и вы то же, что я.

So each of them cut down some branches, following Abimelech’s example. They piled the branches against the walls of the temple and set them on fire. So all the people who had lived in the tower of Shechem died — about 1,000 men and women.

И наруби́л ка́ждый из всего́ наро́да су́чьев, и пошли́ за Авимеле́хом, и положи́ли к ба́шне, и сожгли́ посре́дством их ба́шню огнём, и у́мерли все, бы́вшие в ба́шне Сихе́мской, о́коло ты́сячи мужчи́н и же́нщин.

Then Abimelech attacked the town of Thebez and captured it.

Пото́м пошёл Авимеле́х в Теве́ц и осади́л Теве́ц и взял его́.

But there was a strong tower inside the town, and all the men and women — the entire population — fled to it. They barricaded themselves in and climbed up to the roof of the tower.

Среди́ го́рода была́ кре́пкая ба́шня, и убежа́ли туда́ все мужчи́ны и же́нщины и все жи́тели го́рода, и запёрлись и взошли́ на кро́влю ба́шни.

Abimelech followed them to attack the tower. But as he prepared to set fire to the entrance,

Авимеле́х пришёл к ба́шне и окружи́л её и подошёл к дверя́м ба́шни, что́бы сжечь её огнём.

a woman on the roof dropped a millstone that landed on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull.

Тогда́ одна́ же́нщина бро́сила обло́мок жёрнова на го́лову Авимеле́ху и проломи́ла ему́ че́реп.

He quickly said to his young armor bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me! Don’t let it be said that a woman killed Abimelech!” So the young man ran him through with his sword, and he died.

Авимеле́х то́тчас призва́л о́трока, оружено́сца своего́, и сказа́л ему́: обнажи́ меч твой и умертви́ меня́, что́бы не сказа́ли обо мне́: «же́нщина уби́ла его́». И пронзи́л его́ о́трок его́, и он у́мер.

When Abimelech’s men saw that he was dead, they disbanded and returned to their homes.

Израильтя́не, ви́дя, что у́мер Авимеле́х, пошли́ ка́ждый в своё ме́сто.

In this way, God punished Abimelech for the evil he had done against his father by murdering his seventy brothers.

Так возда́л Бог Авимеле́ху за злодея́ние, кото́рое он сде́лал отцу́ своему́, уби́в се́мьдесят бра́тьев свои́х.

God also punished the men of Shechem for all their evil. So the curse of Jotham son of Gideon was fulfilled.

И все злодея́ния жи́телей Сихе́мских обрати́л Бог на го́лову их; и пости́гло их прокля́тие Иофа́ма, сы́на Иероваа́лова.
