aAs Jacob started on his way again, angels of God came to meet him.

Иаков продолжил свой путь, и ангелы Божьи встретили его.

When Jacob saw them, he exclaimed, “This is God’s camp!” So he named the place Mahanaim.b

Когда Иаков увидел их, он сказал: — Это Божий стан! — и назвал то место Маханаим[173].

Then Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother, Esau, who was living in the region of Seir in the land of Edom.

Иаков послал впереди себя вестников к своему брату Исаву в землю Сеир, страну Эдом.

He told them, “Give this message to my master Esau: ‘Humble greetings from your servant Jacob. Until now I have been living with Uncle Laban,

and now I own cattle, donkeys, flocks of sheep and goats, and many servants, both men and women. I have sent these messengers to inform my lord of my coming, hoping that you will be friendly to me.’”

У меня есть быки, ослы, овцы и козы, слуги и служанки. Я посылаю эту весть моему господину, чтобы найти милость в твоих глазах».

After delivering the message, the messengers returned to Jacob and reported, “We met your brother, Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you — with an army of 400 men!”

Посланцы вернулись и сказали Иакову: — Мы были у твоего брата Исава, и теперь он сам идет тебе навстречу и с ним 400 человек.

Jacob was terrified at the news. He divided his household, along with the flocks and herds and camels, into two groups.

В великом страхе и смятении Иаков разделил людей, которые были с ним, а также стада крупного и мелкого скота и верблюдов.

He thought, “If Esau meets one group and attacks it, perhaps the other group can escape.”

Он думал: «Если Исав нападет на одну половину[174], то другая[175] уцелеет и спасется».

Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father, Isaac — O LORD, you told me, ‘Return to your own land and to your relatives.’ And you promised me, ‘I will treat you kindly.’

Иаков взмолился: — О Бог моего отца Авраама, Бог моего отца Исаака, о Господь, сказавший мне: «Вернись в твою землю, где ты родился, и Я дам тебе процветание»,

I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps!

я недостоин той милости и верности, которые Ты явил Твоему слуге. У меня ничего не было, кроме посоха, когда я перешел Иордан, а теперь я возвращаюсь двумя станами.

O LORD, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.

Молю Тебя, спаси меня от руки моего брата Исава, потому что я боюсь, что он придет и нападет на меня и на матерей с детьми.

But you promised me, ‘I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore — too many to count.’”

Ты ведь Сам сказал: «Я непременно дам тебе процветание и сделаю потомство твое многочисленным, как морской песок, который не сосчитать».

Jacob stayed where he was for the night. Then he selected these gifts from his possessions to present to his brother, Esau:

Он провел там ночь и из того, что у него было, выбрал подарок для своего брата Исава:

200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,

200 коз и 20 козлов, 200 овец и 20 баранов,

30 female camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.

30 верблюдиц с верблюжатами, 40 коров и 10 быков, 20 ослиц и 10 ослов.

He divided these animals into herds and assigned each to different servants. Then he told his servants, “Go ahead of me with the animals, but keep some distance between the herds.”

Он поручил их слугам, каждое стадо особо, и сказал им: — Идите впереди меня и держите между стадами некоторое расстояние.

He gave these instructions to the men leading the first group: “When my brother, Esau, meets you, he will ask, ‘Whose servants are you? Where are you going? Who owns these animals?’

Он научил того, кто шёл первым: — Когда мой брат Исав встретит тебя и спросит: «Чей ты? Куда идешь? Чей скот ты гонишь?» —

You must reply, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob, but they are a gift for his master Esau. Look, he is coming right behind us.’”

тогда ты скажи: «Скот твоего слуги Иакова. Это подарок от него моему господину Исаву, а сам он идет за нами».

Jacob gave the same instructions to the second and third herdsmen and to all who followed behind the herds: “You must say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.

Он научил и второго, и третьего, и всех других, шедших за стадами: — И вы так же скажете Исаву, когда он вас встретит.

And be sure to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” Jacob thought, “I will try to appease him by sending gifts ahead of me. When I see him in person, perhaps he will be friendly to me.”

И ещё скажите: «Твой слуга Иаков идет позади нас». Сам он думал: «Я умиротворю его этими дарами, которые посылаю впереди себя, а потом, когда мы встретимся, он, быть может, примет меня».

So the gifts were sent on ahead, while Jacob himself spent that night in the camp.

Так дары Иакова были отправлены вперед, а сам он провел ночь в лагере.

During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two servant wives, and his eleven sons and crossed the Jabbok River with them.

Той ночью Иаков встал и взял двух своих жен, двух служанок и 11 сыновей и вброд перешел через реку Яббок.

After taking them to the other side, he sent over all his possessions.

Он перевел их через поток и переправил всё свое добро.

This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break.

И вот Иаков остался один, и Некто боролся с ним до самой зари.

When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket.

Увидев, что не может пересилить, Он коснулся сустава бедра Иакова, так что бедро было вывихнуто, когда он боролся с Ним.

Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

И Он сказал: — Отпусти Меня, потому что восходит заря. Но Иаков ответил: — Не отпущу, пока не благословишь меня.

“What is your name?” the man asked. He replied, “Jacob.”

Он спросил: — Как твое имя? — Иаков, — ответил он.

“Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel,c because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”

Тогда Он сказал: — Отныне твое имя будет не Иаков, а Израиль[176], потому что ты боролся с Богом и людьми и победил.

“Please tell me your name,” Jacob said. “Why do you want to know my name?” the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there.

Иаков сказал: — Прошу Тебя, скажи мне Твое имя. Но Он ответил: — Зачем ты спрашиваешь Мое имя? И Он благословил его.

Jacob named the place Peniel (which means “face of God”), for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared.”

Иаков назвал то место Пениэл[177], сказав: «Это потому, что я видел Бога лицом к лицу и остался жив».

The sun was rising as Jacob left Peniel,d and he was limping because of the injury to his hip.

Солнце встало над ним, когда он проходил Пениэл[178], хромая из-за своего бедра.

(Even today the people of Israel don’t eat the tendon near the hip socket because of what happened that night when the man strained the tendon of Jacob’s hip.)

Вот почему до сегодняшнего дня израильтяне не едят сухожилия на суставе бедра: ведь Он коснулся сустава бедра Иакова рядом с сухожилием.
