Dies sind die Worte, die Mose zu ganz Israel geredet hatⓐ jenseits des Jordan, in der Wüsteⓑ, in der Ebene[1], Suf gegenüber, zwischen Paran und Tofel, Laban, Hazerot und Di-Sahab.

These are the words that Moses spoke to all the people of Israel while they were in the wilderness east of the Jordan River. They were camped in the Jordan Valleya near Suph, between Paran on one side and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab on the other.

Elf Tage sind es vom Horeb, auf dem Weg zum Gebirge Seïr, bis Kadesch-Barneaⓒ.

Normally it takes only eleven days to travel from Mount Sinaib to Kadesh-barnea, going by way of Mount Seir.

Und es geschah im vierzigsten Jahr, im elften Monat, am Ersten des Monatsⓓ, da redete Mose zu den Söhnen Israel nach allem, was ihm der HERR für sie geboten hatteⓔ,

But forty years after the Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month,c Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything the LORD had commanded him to say.

nachdem er Sihon, den König der Amoriter, der in Heschbon wohnte[2], geschlagen hatte und Og, den König von Baschan, der in Aschtarot ‹und› in Edreï wohnte[3]ⓕ.

This took place after he had defeated King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and at Edrei had defeated King Og of Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth.

Jenseits des Jordan, im Land Moab, fing Mose an, dieses Gesetz auszulegenⓖ, indem er sprach:

While the Israelites were in the land of Moab east of the Jordan River, Moses carefully explained the LORD’s instructions as follows.

Der HERR, unser Gott, redete zu uns am Horebⓗ und sprach: Lange genug seid ihr an diesem Berg geblieben.

“When we were at Mount Sinai, the LORD our God said to us, ‘You have stayed at this mountain long enough.

Wendet euch, brecht auf[4]ⓘ und zieht zum Gebirge der Amoriter und zu allen ihren Nachbarn in der Ebene[5], auf dem Gebirge, in der Niederung[6]ⓙ und im Süden und an der Küste des Meeres, in das Land der Kanaaniter und zum Libanonⓚ, bis an den großen Strom, den Euphratstromⓛ!

It is time to break camp and move on. Go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the neighboring regions — the Jordan Valley, the hill country, the western foothills,d the Negev, and the coastal plain. Go to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, and all the way to the great Euphrates River.

Siehe, ich habe das Land vor euch dahingegeben. Geht hinein und nehmt das Land in Besitz, von dem der HERR euren Vätern, Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen hat, ‹es› ihnen und ihren Nachkommen nach ihnen zu gebenⓜ!

Look, I am giving all this land to you! Go in and occupy it, for it is the land the LORD swore to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to all their descendants.’”

Und in jener Zeit sprach ich zu euch: Ich allein kann euch nicht tragenⓝ.

Moses continued, “At that time I told you, ‘You are too great a burden for me to carry all by myself.

Der HERR, euer Gott, hat euch zahlreich werden lassen, und siehe, ihr seid heute wie die Sterne des Himmels an Mengeⓞ.

The LORD your God has increased your population, making you as numerous as the stars!

Der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, füge zu euch ‹noch› tausendmal ‹so viel›, wie ihr seid, hinzuⓟ und segne euch, wie er zu euch geredet hatⓠ!

And may the LORD, the God of your ancestors, multiply you a thousand times more and bless you as he promised!

Wie könnte ich allein eure Bürde und eure Last und euren Rechtsstreit tragen?

But you are such a heavy load to carry! How can I deal with all your problems and bickering?

Bringt weise und verständige und anerkannte[7] Männer für eure Stämme, dass ich sie als Oberhäupter über euch einsetzeⓡ!

Choose some well-respected men from each tribe who are known for their wisdom and understanding, and I will appoint them as your leaders.’

Und ihr antwortetet mir und sagtet: Gut ist die Sache, die zu tun du angekündigt hast.

“Then you responded, ‘Your plan is a good one.’

Und ich nahm die Oberhäupter eurer Stämme, weise und anerkannte[8] Männer, und setzte sie als Oberhäupter über euch ein, als Oberste über Tausend und Oberste über Hundert und Oberste über Fünfzig und Oberste über Zehn und als Verwalter für eure Stämme[9]ⓢ.

So I took the wise and respected men you had selected from your tribes and appointed them to serve as judges and officials over you. Some were responsible for a thousand people, some for a hundred, some for fifty, and some for ten.

Und ich gebot euren Richtern in jener Zeit: Hört ‹die Streitsachen› zwischen euren Brüdern und richtet gerecht zwischen einem Mann und seinem Bruderⓣ und dem Fremden bei ihmⓤ!

“At that time I instructed the judges, ‘You must hear the cases of your fellow Israelites and the foreigners living among you. Be perfectly fair in your decisions

Ihr sollt im Gericht nicht die Person ansehenⓥ; den Kleinen wie den Großen sollt ihr hörenⓦ. Ihr sollt euch vor niemandem fürchtenⓧ, denn das Gericht ist Gottes Sacheⓨ. Die Sache aber, die zu schwer für euch ist, bringt vor mich, dass ich sie höreⓩ!

and impartial in your judgments. Hear the cases of those who are poor as well as those who are rich. Don’t be afraid of anyone’s anger, for the decision you make is God’s decision. Bring me any cases that are too difficult for you, and I will handle them.’

So gebot ich euch in jener Zeit all die Dinge, die ihr tun solltet.

“At that time I gave you instructions about everything you were to do.

ⓐ Und wir brachen auf vom Horeb und zogen durch diese ganze große und schreckliche Wüste, die ihr gesehen habt auf dem Weg zum Gebirge der Amoriter, wie der HERR, unser Gott, es uns geboten hatte; und wir kamen bis Kadesch-Barneaⓑ.

“Then, just as the LORD our God commanded us, we left Mount Sinai and traveled through the great and terrifying wilderness, as you yourselves remember, and headed toward the hill country of the Amorites. When we arrived at Kadesh-barnea,

Und ich sagte zu euch: Ihr seid bis zu dem Gebirge der Amoriter gekommen, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns gibt.

I said to you, ‘You have now reached the hill country of the Amorites that the LORD our God is giving us.

Siehe, der HERR, dein Gott, hat das Land vor dir dahingegeben. Zieh hinauf, nimm in Besitz, wie der HERR, der Gott deiner Väter, zu dir geredet hat! Fürchte dich nicht und sei nicht niedergeschlagenⓒ!

Look! He has placed the land in front of you. Go and occupy it as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Don’t be afraid! Don’t be discouraged!’

Da tratet ihr alle zu mir und sagtet: Lasst uns Männer vor uns hersenden, dass sie das Land für uns erkunden und uns Bericht erstatten über den Weg, auf dem wir hinaufziehen, und über die Städte, zu denen wir kommen sollen!

“But you all came to me and said, ‘First, let’s send out scouts to explore the land for us. They will advise us on the best route to take and which towns we should enter.’

Und die Sache war gut in meinen Augen. Und ich nahm zwölf Männer von euch, je einen Mann für den Stammⓓ.

“This seemed like a good idea to me, so I chose twelve scouts, one from each of your tribes.

Und sie wandten sich und zogen ins Gebirge hinauf, und sie kamen bis zum Tal Eschkol und kundschafteten es[10] aus.

They headed for the hill country and came to the valley of Eshcol and explored it.

Und sie nahmen von den Früchten des Landes in ihre Hand und brachten ‹sie› zu uns herab. Und sie erstatteten uns Bericht und sagten: Das Land ist gut, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns gibtⓔ.

They picked some of its fruit and brought it back to us. And they reported, ‘The land the LORD our God has given us is indeed a good land.’

Aber ihr wolltet nicht hinaufziehen und wart widerspenstig gegen den Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottesⓕ.

“But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God and refused to go in.

Und ihr murrtet in euren Zelten[11] und sagtet: Weil der HERR uns hasst, hat er uns aus dem Land Ägypten herausgeführt, um uns in die Hand der Amoriter zu geben, damit sie uns vernichtenⓖ.

You complained in your tents and said, ‘The LORD must hate us. That’s why he has brought us here from Egypt — to hand us over to the Amorites to be slaughtered.

Wohin ziehen wir? Unsere Brüder haben unser Herz verzagt gemachtⓗ, indem sie sagten: Ein Volk, größer und höher gewachsen[12] als wir, Städte, groß und bis an den Himmel befestigt, und sogar Enakitersöhne haben wir dort gesehenⓘ!

Where can we go? Our brothers have demoralized us with their report. They tell us, “The people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns are large, with walls rising high into the sky! We even saw giants there — the descendants of Anak!”’

Da sagte ich zu euch: Erschreckt nicht und fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnenⓙ!

“But I said to you, ‘Don’t be shocked or afraid of them!

Der HERR, euer Gott, der vor euch herzieht, er wird für euch kämpfenⓚ nach allem, was er in Ägypten vor euren Augen für euch getan hatⓛ,

The LORD your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt.

und in der Wüste, wo du gesehen hast, dass der HERR, dein Gott, dich getragen hat, wie ein Mann seinen Sohn trägtⓜ, auf dem ganzen Weg, den ihr gezogen seid, bis ihr an diesen Ort kamtⓝ.

And you saw how the LORD your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child. Now he has brought you to this place.’

Aber trotzdem[13] hatte niemand von euch Vertrauen in den HERRN, euren Gottⓞ,

“But even after all he did, you refused to trust the LORD your God,

der auf dem Weg vor euch herzog, um euch einen Ort auszusuchen, damit ihr euch lagern konntetⓟ: bei Nacht im Feuer, damit ihr auf dem Weg sehen konntet, auf dem ihr zoget, und bei Tag in der Wolkeⓠ.

who goes before you looking for the best places to camp, guiding you with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day.

Der HERR aber hatte den Lärm eurer Reden gehört. Da wurde er zornig und schwor:

“When the LORD heard your complaining, he became very angry. So he solemnly swore,

Wenn irgendjemand unter diesen Männern, ‹von› dieser bösen Generation, das gute Land sehen wird, das ich euren Vätern zu geben geschworen habe[14]ⓡ!

‘Not one of you from this wicked generation will live to see the good land I swore to give your ancestors,

Nur Kaleb, der Sohn des Jefunne, er soll es sehen, und ihm und seinen Söhnen werde ich das Land geben, das er betreten hat, dafür, dass er ganz und gar hinter dem HERRN ‹stand›ⓢ. —

except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see this land because he has followed the LORD completely. I will give to him and his descendants some of the very land he explored during his scouting mission.’

Auch gegen mich wurde der HERR zornig euretwegen und sprach: Auch du sollst nicht dort hineinkommenⓣ!

“And the LORD was also angry with me because of you. He said to me, ‘Moses, not even you will enter the Promised Land!

Josua, der Sohn des Nun, der vor dir steht, er soll dorthin kommen! Ihn stärke, denn er soll es Israel als Erbe austeilenⓤ! —

Instead, your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will lead the people into the land. Encourage him, for he will lead Israel as they take possession of it.

Und eure ‹kleinen› Kinder, von denen ihr sagtet: «Sie werden zur Beute werden!», und eure Söhne, die heute weder Gutes noch Böses kennen, sie sollen dorthin kommen, und ihnen werde ich es geben, und sie sollen es in Besitz nehmenⓥ.

I will give the land to your little ones — your innocent children. You were afraid they would be captured, but they will be the ones who occupy it.

Ihr aber, wendet euch und brecht auf[15] zur Wüste, auf dem Weg zum Schilfmeer!ⓦ

As for you, turn around now and go on back through the wilderness toward the Red Sea.e’

Da antwortetet ihr und sagtet zu mir: Wir haben gegen den HERRN gesündigt! Wir wollen hinaufziehen und kämpfen nach allem, was der HERR, unser Gott, uns geboten hat. Und ihr gürtetet ein jeder seine Waffen um und hieltet es für ein Leichtes, ins Gebirge hinaufzuziehen.

“Then you confessed, ‘We have sinned against the LORD! We will go into the land and fight for it, as the LORD our God has commanded us.’ So your men strapped on their weapons, thinking it would be easy to attack the hill country.

Da sprach der HERR zu mir: Sprich zu ihnen: Zieht nicht hinauf und kämpft nicht, denn ich bin nicht in eurer Mitte; damit ihr nicht vor euren Feinden geschlagen werdet!

“But the LORD told me to tell you, ‘Do not attack, for I am not with you. If you go ahead on your own, you will be crushed by your enemies.’

So redete ich zu euch, aber ihr hörtet nicht. Und ihr wart widerspenstig gegen den Befehl des HERRN und handeltet vermessen und zogt in das Gebirge hinauf.

“This is what I told you, but you would not listen. Instead, you again rebelled against the LORD’s command and arrogantly went into the hill country to fight.

Da zogen die Amoriter aus, die auf jenem Gebirge wohnten, euch entgegen und jagten euch nachⓧ, wie es die Bienen tun, und zersprengten euch in Seïr bis nach Horma.

But the Amorites who lived there came out against you like a swarm of bees. They chased and battered you all the way from Seir to Hormah.

Und ihr kehrtet zurück und weintet vor dem HERRN. Aber der HERR hörte nicht auf eure Stimme und neigte sein Ohr nicht zu euchⓨ. —

Then you returned and wept before the LORD, but he refused to listen.

Und ihr bliebet in Kadesch viele Tage; eben die Zeit[16], die ihr ‹dort› bliebet.ⓩ

So you stayed there at Kadesh for a long time.
