This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.a It began

wie in dem Propheten Jesaja geschrieben steht: «Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor deinem Angesicht her, der deinen Weg bereiten wird.»ⓒ
 
just as the prophet Isaiah had written: “Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way.b

«Stimme eines Rufenden in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, macht seine Pfade gerade!»ⓓ
 
He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the LORD’s coming! Clear the road for him!’c”

Johannes trat auf und taufte in der Wüste und predigte die Taufe der Buße[4] zur Vergebung der Sündenⓔ.
 
This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

Und es ging zu ihm hinaus das ganze jüdische Land und alle Einwohner Jerusalems, und sie wurden im Jordanfluss von ihm getauftⓕ, indem sie ihre Sünden bekannten.
 
All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.

Und Johannes war mit Kamelhaaren und einem ledernen Gürtel um seine Lende bekleidetⓖ; und er aß Heuschrecken und wilden Honig.
 
His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.

Und er predigte und sagte: Nach mir kommt der, der stärker ist als ich; ich bin nicht würdig, ‹ihm› gebückt den Riemen seiner Sandalen zu lösenⓗ.
 
John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am — so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals.

Ich habe euch mit[5] Wasser getauft, er aber wird euch mit[6] Heiligem Geist taufenⓘ.
 
I baptize you withd water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”

ⓙ Und es geschah in jenen Tagen: Jesus kam von Nazareth in Galiläaⓚ und wurde von Johannes im Jordan getauft.
 
One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River.

Und sobald er aus dem Wasser heraufstieg, sah er die Himmel sich teilen und den Geist wie eine Taube auf ihn herabfahren.
 
As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on hime like a dove.

Und eine Stimme kam aus den Himmelnⓛ: Du bist mein geliebter Sohnⓜ, an dir habe ich Wohlgefallen gefundenⓝ.
 
And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”

ⓞ Und sogleich treibt ihn der Geist in die Wüste hinaus. ⓟ
 
The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness,

Und er war vierzig Tage in der Wüste und wurde von dem Satan versucht; und er war unter den wilden Tieren, und die Engel dienten ihmⓠ.
 
where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.

ⓡ Und nachdem Johannes überliefert warⓢ, kam Jesus nach Galiläa und predigte das Evangelium Gottesⓣ
 
Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News.f

und sprach: Die Zeit ist erfülltⓤ, und das Reich[7] Gottes ist nahe gekommen. Tut Buße und glaubt an das Evangeliumⓥ!
 
“The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”

Und als er am See von Galiläa entlangging, sah er Simon und Andreas, Simons Bruder, im See die Netze auswerfen, denn sie waren Fischer. ⓦ
 
One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simong and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.

Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Kommt mir nachⓧ, und ich werde euch zu Menschenfischern machen[8]!
 
Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”

Und sogleich verließen sie die Netze und folgten ihm nachⓨ.
 
And they left their nets at once and followed him.
19
Und als er ein wenig weiterging, sah er Jakobus, den ‹Sohn› des Zebedäus, und seinen Bruder Johannes, auch sie im Boot, wie sie die Netze ausbesserten;
 
A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets.

und sogleich rief er sie. Und sie ließen ihren Vater Zebedäus mit den Tagelöhnern im Boot und gingen weg, ihm nachⓩ.
 
He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men.

ⓐ Und sie gehen nach Kapernaumⓑ hinein. Und sogleich ging er am Sabbat in die Synagoge[9] und lehrteⓒ.
 
Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach.
22
Und sie erstaunten sehr über seine Lehre; denn er lehrte sie wie einer, der Vollmacht hat, und nicht wie die Schriftgelehrtenⓓ.
 
The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority — quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

Und sogleich war in ihrer Synagoge ein Mensch mit einem unreinen Geistⓔ; und er schrie aufⓕ
 
Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evilh spirit cried out,
24
und sagte: Was haben wir mit dir zu schaffen, Jesus, Nazarenerⓖ? Bist du gekommen, uns zu verderben? Ich kenne dich, wer du bist: der Heilige Gottesⓗ.
 
“Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”

Und Jesus bedrohte ihn und sprach: Verstummeⓘ und fahre aus von ihmⓙ!
 
But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered.
26
Und der unreine Geist zerrte ihn und rief mit lauter Stimme und fuhr von ihm ausⓚ.
 
At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.
27
Und sie entsetzten sich alle, so dass sie sich untereinander befragten und sagten: Was ist dies? Eine neue Lehre mit Vollmacht? Und den unreinen Geistern gebietet er, und sie gehorchen ihmⓛ.
 
Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!”

Und die Kunde von ihm ging sogleich hinaus überall in die ganze Umgebung Galiläas.
 
The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee.

ⓜ Und sobald sie aus der Synagoge hinausgingen, kamen sie mit Jakobus und Johannes in das Haus Simons und Andreas'. ⓝ
 
After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home.

Die Schwiegermutter Simonsⓞ aber lag fieberkrank danieder; und sofort sagen sie ihm von ihr.
 
Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away.

Und er trat hinzu, ergriff ihre Handⓟ und richtete sie auf; und das Fieber verließ sie, und sie diente ihnenⓠ.
 
So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand, and helped her sit up. Then the fever left her, and she prepared a meal for them.

ⓡ Als es aber Abend geworden war und die Sonne unterging, brachten sie alle Leidenden und Besessenen zu ihm; ⓢ
 
That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus.
33
und die ganze Stadt war an der Tür versammelt.
 
The whole town gathered at the door to watch.
34
Und er heilte viele an mancherlei Krankheiten Leidende, und er trieb viele Dämonen ausⓣ und ließ die Dämonen nicht reden, weil sie ihn kanntenⓤ.
 
So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak.
35
Und frühmorgens, als es noch sehr dunkel war, stand er auf und ging hinaus und ging fort an einen einsamen Ort und betete dortⓥ.
 
Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.
36
Und Simon und die, die mit ihm warenⓦ, eilten ihm nach;
 
Later Simon and the others went out to find him.
37
und sie fanden ihn und sagen zu ihm: Alle suchen dich.
 
When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
38
Und er spricht zu ihnen: Lasst uns anderswohin in die benachbarten Marktflecken gehen, damit ich auch dort predige; denn dazu bin ich ausgegangen.
 
But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.”
39
Und er ging und predigte in ihren Synagogen in ganz Galiläaⓧ und trieb die Dämonen ausⓨ.
 
So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.
40
ⓩ Und es kommt ein Aussätziger[10] zu ihm, bittet ihn und kniet nieder und spricht zu ihm: Wenn du willst, kannst du mich reinigen. ⓐ
 
A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.

Und er war innerlich bewegtⓑ und streckte seine Hand aus, rührte ‹ihn› an und spricht zu ihm: Ich will. Sei gereinigt!
 
Moved with compassion,i Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!”
42
Und sogleich wich der Aussatz von ihm, und er war gereinigtⓒ.
 
Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed.
43
Und er bedrohte ihn und schickte ihn sogleich fortⓓ
 
Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning:
44
und spricht zu ihm: Sieh zu, sage niemand etwasⓔ! Sondern geh hin, zeige dich dem Priester, und opfere für deine Reinigung, was Mose geboten hat, ihnen zu einem Zeugnisⓕ!
 
“Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy.j This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”

Der aber ging weg und fing an, die Sache[11] eifrig zu verkünden und auszubreitenⓖ, so dass er nicht mehr öffentlich in eine Stadt gehen konnte; sondern er war draußen an einsamen Orten, und sie kamen von allen Seiten zu ihm.
 
But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and he couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere. He had to stay out in the secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to him.
