Иаков тоже ушёл с того места, и на пути его встретили Ангелы Божьи.

So Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

Увидев их, он сказал: «Стан Божий!» И назвал это место Маханаим.

When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s camp.” And he called the name of that place [a]Mahanaim.

Брат Иакова, Исав, жил в земле Сеир, в гористой стране Едом. Иаков послал впереди себя вестников к Исаву,

Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the [b]country of Edom.

приказав им: «Поведайте моему господину Исаву о том, что его слуга Иаков говорит: „Все эти годы я жил у Лавана,

And he commanded them, saying, “Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now.

есть у меня множество коров, ослов, мелкого скота, а также слуг и служанок. Господин, я посылаю эту весть с просьбой, чтобы ты принял нас”».

I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”

Вестники возвратились к Иакову и сказали: «Мы пошли к твоему брату Исаву, и он вышел навстречу тебе, и с ним четыреста человек».

Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

Такая весть испугала Иакова, и он разделил всех людей, кто был с ним, и весь скот, и всех верблюдов на две группы,

So Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies.

подумав: «Если Исав придёт и уничтожит одну группу, то другая сможет спастись бегством».

And he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [c]attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.”

«Бог отца моего Авраама! — взмолился Иаков, — Бог отца моего Исаака! Господи, Ты велел мне возвратиться в мою землю, к моей семье, сказав, что это будет лучше для меня.

Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’:

Ты был милостив ко мне и сделал мне много добра. Когда я впервые пересёк реку Иордан, у меня ничего не было, только дорожный посох. Теперь же у меня достаточно добра на два стана.

I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies.

Прошу Тебя, спаси меня от брата моего Исава, так как я боюсь его. Боюсь, что он придёт и убьёт всех нас, даже матерей с детьми.

Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and [d]attack me and the mother with the children.

Господи, Ты сказал мне: „Я буду тебе благоволить, умножу твоё семейство и сделаю твоё потомство многочисленным, и как песчинок в море их будет не счесть”».

For You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”

Иаков остался на том месте на ночь и приготовил Исаву подарок.

So he lodged there that same night, and took what [e]came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother:

Иаков взял 200 коз и 20 козлов, 200 овец и 20 баранов,

two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

30 верблюдов с верблюжатами, 40 коров и 10 быков, 20 ослиц и 10 ослов.

thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.

Поручив стада своим слугам, Иаков сказал им: «Отделите оба стада друг от друга, идите вперёд и сохраняйте расстояние между стадами».

Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.”

Иаков дал слугам приказания, а слуге, отправлявшемуся с первым стадом, он сказал: «Когда мой брат Исав подойдёт к тебе и спросит: „Чей это скот? Куда ты идёшь и чей ты слуга?” —

And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’

то ты должен ответить: „Этот скот принадлежит твоему слуге Иакову, и он посылает его в дар тебе, господин мой Исав. Иаков же следует за нами”».

then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ”

То же самое приказал Иаков и второму и третьему слуге, а также и всем остальным. «Сделайте то же самое, когда встретите Исава, — повелел он. —

So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;

Скажите: „Это дар тебе, а твой слуга Иаков следует за нами”». «Если я пошлю вперёд людей с дарами, — думал Иаков, — то, может быть, Исав простит меня и примет».

and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”

И вот Иаков отослал дары Исаву, а сам остался на ночь в стане.

So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

Поздно ночью Иаков поднялся и ушёл оттуда, взяв с собой своих жён, обеих служанок и одиннадцать своих сыновей, и перешёл вброд реку Иавок.

And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok.

Он послал через реку свою семью, а потом переправил и всё своё имущество.

He took them, sent them [f]over the brook, and sent over what he had.

Прежде чем сам Иаков успел переправиться вброд, к нему подошёл Человек и стал бороться с ним, и боролся, пока не взошло солнце.

Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the [g]breaking of day.

Увидев, что не может одолеть Иакова, Человек коснулся его бедра и тут же вывихнул его.

Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [h]touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.

И тогда Человек попросил Иакова: «Отпусти Меня, так как восходит солнце», но Иаков ответил: «Не отпущу, пока не благословишь меня».

And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!”

Человек спросил его: «Как твоё имя?» «Иаков», — ответил Иаков.

So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.”

Тогда Человек сказал: «Отныне твоё имя будет не Иаков, а Израиль. Я даю тебе это имя, потому что ты боролся с Богом и с людьми и не был побеждён».

And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [i]Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

Тогда Иаков сказал Ему: «Прошу Тебя, скажи, как Твоё имя?» Но Человек ответил: «Для чего ты спрашиваешь о Моём имени?» И там Он благословил Иакова.

Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.” And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He blessed him there.

Иаков назвал это место Пенуэл, сказав: «В этом месте я встретился с Богом лицом к лицу, но моя жизнь была сохранена».

So Jacob called the name of the place [j]Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

Когда Иаков проходил через Пенуэл, взошло солнце. Иаков же из-за своей ноги шёл, хромая,

Just as he crossed over [k]Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.

и потому народ Израиля по сей день не употребляет в пищу мускул, который на бедре, так как именно в этот мускул был поражён Иаков.

Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He [l]touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.
