Пройдя через Амфиполь и Аполлонию, пришли в Фессалонику, где была еврейская синагога.

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

И, как обычно, Павел вошёл к ним и три субботы рассуждал с ними о Писаниях,

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

объясняя и доказывая, что Христу должно было пострадать и воскреснуть из мертвых: — Это Христос, тот Иисус, Которого я возвещаю вам.

Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

И некоторые из них были убеждены и примкнули к Павлу и Силе, как и множество набожных греков, и немало знатных женщин.

And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

Но евреи, возревновав и подобрав из уличной черни кое-каких негодных людей, собрали толпу и начали возмущать город. И подступив к дому Иасона, пытались вывести их к народу.

But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Но не найдя их, повлекли Иасона и некоторых братьев к градоначальникам, крича: — Эти всесветные возмутители, они уже здесь,

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

и Иасон их принял! И все они поступают против повелений цезаря, называя царем другого, Иисуса!

Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

Слыша это, толпа и градоначальники были встревожены,

And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

но взяв залог от Иасона и прочих, они отпустили их.

And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

Братья же немедленно ночью отправили Павла и Силу в Верию. Они, прибыв, пошли в еврейскую синагогу.

And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

А эти люди были благороднее фессалоникийских: они приняли слово со всем усердием, ежедневно исследуя Писания, так ли это.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

И многие из них поверили, немало и из почтенных греков мужчин и женщин.

Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

Но когда евреи из Фессалоники узнали, что и в Верии Павлом было возвещено слово Божье, они пришли и туда, волнуя и возбуждая толпы.

But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

Тогда братья тотчас отправили Павла к морю, а Сила и Тимофей остались там.

And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

А провожавшие Павла довели его до Афин и, получив указание для Силы и Тимофея — как можно скорее идти к нему, ушли.

And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

Ожидая их в Афинах, Павел разгневался духом, видя этот город, полный идолов.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

Итак, он рассуждал в синагоге с евреями и с набожными, и каждый день на рыночной площади со случайными встречными.

Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

А некоторые из эпикурейских и стоических философов спорили с ним, и одни говорили: «Что хочет сказать этот пустослов?» А другие: «Кажется, это вестник чужих богов», — потому что он благовествовал Иисуса и воскресение.

Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

И взяв его, привели на холм Ареса и говорили: — Можем ли мы узнать, что это за новое учение, возвещаемое тобой?

And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

Ибо ты доносишь до наших ушей нечто новое. Поэтому хотим узнать, что это может быть?

For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

А все афиняне и живущие у них чужестранцы ни на что другое не тратили время, как на то, чтобы рассказывать или слушать что-нибудь новое.

(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

И, встав посредине холма Ареса, Павел сказал: — Афиняне! По всему я вижу, что вы особенно набожны.

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

Ибо, проходя и осматривая ваши места поклонения, я нашел и жертвенник, на котором было написано: «Неизвестному Богу». Итак, Кого вы, не зная, почитаете, я возвещаю вам.

For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Бог, сотворивший мир и всё, что в нём, Он, Господь неба и земли, обитает не в рукотворных храмах,

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

не нуждается ни в поклонении людей, ни в чём-либо ином: Он Сам дарует всем и жизнь, и дыхание, и всё-всё.

Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

От одного Он сотворил человеческий род, обитать по всему лицу земли, определив сроки и пределы их обитания,

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

искать Бога, не коснутся ли они Его и не найдут ли, хотя Он и недалеко от каждого из нас.

That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

Ибо в Нём мы живем и движемся и существуем, как и некоторые из ваших поэтов говорили: «Мы — Его порождение».

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

А будучи порождением Божьм, мы не должны думать, что божественное подобно золоту, или серебру, или камню, носящим печать ремесла и замысла человека.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Поэтому, опуская времена невежества, Бог ныне повелевает всем людям повсюду — обратиться,

Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

ибо Он определил день, когда будет справедливо судить вселенную, чрез Мужа, Которого Он поставил, дав доказательство всем, воскресив Его из мертвых.

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

Услышав же о воскресении мертвых, одни насмехались, другие сказали: — Ещё послушаем тебя об этом.

So Paul departed from among them.

Итак, Павел оставил их.

Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Но некоторые люди, примкнув к нему, поверили: среди них и Дионисий Ареопагит, и женщина по имени Дамарь, и другие с ними.
