Братья! Не все делайтесь учителями. Не забывайте, что осуждению мы подлежим особенному.

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

А согрешаем мы на каждом шагу. Кто не согрешает в слове, тот человек совершенный: он и все тело способен держать в узде.

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Мы накидываем уздечку на морду лошади, чтобы все ее тело себе подчинить и им управлять.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Точно так же и корабль, хотя его громаду и бросает на сильном ветру, слушается крохотного руля по команде капитана.

Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

Вот и язык — малый снаряд, а творит много. Смотрите-ка, сколько дров сгорает от слабого огонька!

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

Таким же огнем бывает и язык, средоточие неправды. Язык так расположен среди других частей тела, что оскверняет всю плоть, пережигает нить жизни. А сам он возгорается от геенны.

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

Всякие существа: звери, птицы, твари пресмыкающиеся, обитатели моря, — приручены или приручаются другими существами, людьми.

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

Ну а язык унять никто из людей не может. Это вертлявое зло хуже смертельной отравы.

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

Им благословляем Господа и Отца, им же проклинаем человека, созданного по Божьему подобию.

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

Из одних уст слышим и благословение, и проклятие. Так, братья, не пристало этому быть.

from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Из одного источника течет ли вода сладкая, она же и горькая?

Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

Не может, братья, смоковница уродить маслину, а виноградная лоза — смокву. И вода в роднике не бывает сразу и соленой, и пресной.

Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Мудрость и рассудок, кто ими у вас обладает, доказывай делом, хорошим поведением, мудрой кротостью.

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

Но если в сердце у вас беспокойная зависть и непримиримость, не льстите себе, не извращайте истину.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Это не та мудрость, которая приходит свыше, а земная, от низкой души, от Дьявола.

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

Где зависть и непримиримость, там склока и всяческий вздор.

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

А мудрость свыше прежде всего чиста, а кроме того, уступчива, сговорчива, покладиста, до конца милосердна и добра, беспристрастна и непритворна.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Праведность — плод согласия, выращенный теми, кому дорого согласие.

And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
