Братья мои, пусть немногие из вас становятся учителями, ведь вы знаете, что мы будем судимы более строго.

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

Мы все во многом грешим. Кто не грешит в словах, тот человек совершенный, способный обуздать и все тело.

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Вкладывая удила в рот лошади, чтобы заставить ее повиноваться, мы управляем всем ее телом.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Или возьмем, к примеру, корабли: как бы велики они ни были и какой бы ни дул сильный ветер, они направляются небольшим рулем туда, куда хочет штурман.

Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

Так же и язык: это маленький орган, но он много хвастается. Большой лесной пожар начинается с маленькой искры.

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

Язык — это тоже огонь, это область неправды среди других наших органов. Он оскверняет все тело и воспламеняет весь ход жизни, сам загораясь от ада.

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

Все звери, птицы, пресмыкающиеся и морские животные могут быть укрощены и укрощаются человеком,

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

но язык не может укротить никто. Он — необузданное зло, полное смертоносного яда.

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

Языком мы славим Господа и Отца и тем же языком тут же проклинаем людей, сотворенных по подобию Бога.

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

Из тех же уст выходят хвала и проклятие! Братья мои, этого быть не должно.

from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Разве может из одного и того же источника течь сладкая и горькая вода?

Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

Разве могут на инжире расти маслины или же на виноградной лозе — инжир? Так же и из соленого источника не может течь пресная вода.

Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Кто среди вас мудрый и знающий? Пусть он своей достойной жизнью покажет, что его дела совершены с кротостью, которую дает мудрость.

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

Но если вы вынашиваете в сердце горькую зависть и самолюбивые желания, то не хвалитесь и не лгите против истины.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Такая "мудрость" приходит вовсе не с небес, она земная, суетная, от дьявола.

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

Там, где людьми руководят зависть и самолюбивые желания, там беспорядок и всякого рода зло.

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

Та же мудрость, которая приходит с небес, чиста, миролюбива, скромна, послушна, полна милосердия и добрых плодов, беспристрастна и искренна.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Плод же праведности мирно сеется теми, кто творит мир.

And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
