Доброе имя лучше дорогих благовоний, день смерти даже лучше дня рождения.

A [good] name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

Лучше пойти на похороны, чем на веселье, потому что все должны умереть, и каждый живущий должен с этим примириться.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: in that that is the end of all men, and the living taketh it to heart.

Скорбь лучше смеха, потому что наши сердца могут ликовать, когда на лицах печаль.

Vexation is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

Мудрый думает о смерти, а глупый только о том, как получше провести время.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools in the house of mirth.

Лучше услышать укоры мудрого, чем восхваления глупца.

It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise, than to hear the song of fools.

Смех глупых бессмыслен, как попытка поджечь тернии, чтобы согреть котёл. Тернии сгорают слишком быстро, и котёл остаётся холодным.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

Даже мудрый забудет мудрость свою, если ему много заплатят. Деньги уничтожат его разум.

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad, and a gift destroyeth the heart.

Заканчивать дело лучше, чем начинать, и лучше быть мягким и терпеливым, чем высокомерным и нетерпеливым.

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; better is a patient spirit than a proud spirit.

Не впадай быстро во гнев, потому что гнев живёт в груди глупцов.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be vexed; for vexation resteth in the bosom of fools.

Не спрашивай: "Почему раньше жизнь была лучше?" Мудрость не задаёт такой вопрос.

Say not, How is it that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

Мудрость — хороша, как хорошо наследовать собственность, от неё живущему прибыль.

Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, and profitable to them that see the sun.

Мудрость даёт защиту, как дают защиту деньги, но мудрость лучше любых денег, потому что может спасти своему владельцу жизнь.

For wisdom is a defence [as] money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, [that] wisdom maketh them that possess it to live.

Посмотри на то, что сделал Бог, ты ничего не можешь изменить, даже если считаешь неправильным дело Его.

Consider the work of God; for who can make straight what he hath made crooked?

Радуйся жизни, когда она хороша, но когда она тяжела, помни, что Бог нам даёт и добрые времена, и плохие, и никто не знает, что произойдёт в будущем.

In the day of prosperity enjoy good, and in the day of adversity consider: God hath also set the one beside the other, to the end that man should find out nothing [of what shall be] after him.

Всё видел я за свою короткую жизнь: я видел добрых людей, умирающих молодыми, и я видел злых людей, живущих долгую жизнь.

All [this] have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a righteous [man] that perisheth by his righteousness, and there is a wicked [man] that prolongeth [his days] by his wickedness.

Зачем себя убивать? Не выставляй себя слишком праведным и слишком мудрым.

Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

Не будь слишком плох и слишком глуп. Зачем тебе умирать преждевременно?

Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

Хорошо придерживаться этого правила и от других не отступать. Ибо тот, кто боится Бога, преуспеет и в том, и в другом.

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God cometh forth from them all.

Мудрость даёт человеку силу. Один мудрец сильнее десяти глупых правителей города.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty [men] that are in a city.

Нет на земле такого человека, который делает только добро и никогда не грешит.

Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.

Не слушай всего, что говорят люди. Ты можешь услышать, как твой слуга говорит о тебе плохо.

Also give not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee.

Ты знаешь, что и ты сам много раз говорил о других плохо.

For also thine own heart knoweth that oftentimes thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

Обратившись к мудрости, я испытал всё это, я хотел быть воистину мудрым, но это было невозможно.

All this have I tried by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

Я не могу понять, почему всё происходит так, как происходит, понять это слишком трудно для кого бы то ни было.

Whatever hath been, is far off, and exceeding deep: who will find it out?

Я учился и старался всеми силами обрести истинную мудрость, я пытался найти причину всего. Чему научился я? Я понял, что глупо быть злым, а вести себя глупо — равносильно безумству.

I turned, I and my heart, to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom and reason, and to know wickedness to be folly, and foolishness to be madness;

И ещё я понял, что некоторые женщины опасны, словно ловушки, их сердца, как сети, их руки, как цепи. И быть пойманным такой женщиной хуже самой смерти. Кто следует Богу, тот избежит её, но грешник станет её добычей.

and I found more bitter than death the woman whose heart is nets and snares, [and] whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her.

Учитель говорит: "Я собрал всё это вместе, чтобы увидеть, какой ответ могу я найти,

See this which I have found, saith the Preacher, [searching] one by one to find out the reason;

но до сих пор ищу ответ. И нашёл я одного доброго человека на тысячу, но доброй женщины не нашёл ни одной.

which my soul yet seeketh, and I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found, but a woman among all those have I not found.

Есть одно, что я понял: Бог правыми создал людей, но люди нашли много путей ко злу".

Only see this which I have found: that God made man upright, but they have sought out many devices.
