The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Слова Екклесиаста[1], сына Давида, царя в Иерусалиме.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

«Суета[2] сует! — сказал Екклесиаст. — Суета сует, всё суета!»

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

Что приобретает человек от всех трудов своих, которые он делает под солнцем?

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

Поколения приходят и уходят, а земля остается навеки.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

Солнце всходит, и солнце заходит, и вновь спешит к месту своего восхода.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

Летит ветер на юг, потом направляется к северу, кружится, кружится и возвращается на свои круги.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

Все реки текут в море, но море не переполняется. И возвращаются реки к своим истокам, чтобы течь снова.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Все эти вещи утомляют: человек не может всё пересказать, глаз не насытится тем, что видит, ухо не наполнится тем, что слышит.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Что было, то и будет, и что делалось, то и будет делаться опять. Нет ничего нового под солнцем!

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Бывает такое, о чем говорят: «Смотри, вот что-то новое!» Но и это уже бывало в прежние времена, ещё задолго до нас.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Никто не помнит о живших прежде, и о тех, что появятся позже, не вспомнят те, кто будет жить после них.

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Я, Екклесиаст, был царем над Израилем в Иерусалиме.

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

Я внимательно изучил и испытал мудростью всё, что делается под небом. Это тяжелое бремя, которое Бог возложил на людей.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Я видел всё, что делается под солнцем, всё — суета, и всё — погоня за ветром[3].

That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

Кривое не выпрямить, а чего нет, того не сосчитать.

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

Я сказал себе: «Величием и мудростью я превзошел всех, кто правил Иерусалимом до меня. Я приобрел много мудрости и знаний».

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

Затем я решил узнать, в чем мудрость, а также в чем безумие и глупость, но понял, что и это погоня за ветром.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

Ведь с большой мудростью приходит много печали, и чем больше знаний, тем больше скорбь.
