The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Марнасць з марнасцей, — кажа Эклезіяст, — марнасць з марнасцей і ўсё марнасць.

“Vanity[a] of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

Што за карысць чалавеку ад усёй працы яго, у якой працуе пад сонцам?

What profit has a man from all his labor In which he [b]toils under the sun?

Пакаленне адыходзіць і пакаленне прыходзіць, а зямля трывае вечна.

One generation passes away, and another generation comes; But the earth abides forever.

Узыходзіць сонца, і заходзіць сонца, і спяшаецца на месца сваё, і там ізноў нараджаецца.

The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, And [c]hastens to the place where it arose.

Кружляе праз поўдзень і паварочвае на поўнач, абыходзячы ўсё навокал, рухаецца вецер і на кругі свае вяртаецца.

The wind goes toward the south, And turns around to the north; The wind whirls about continually, And comes again on its circuit.

Усе рэкі цякуць у мора, і мора не перапаўняецца; да месца, адкуль выходзяць, туды і вяртаюцца рэкі ў цячэнні сваім.

All the rivers run into the sea, Yet the sea is not full; To the place from which the rivers come, There they return again.

Усе рэчы цяжкія, не можа выясніць іх чалавек моваю. Не насычаецца вока глядзеннем, ані вуха не напаўняецца слуханнем.

All things are [d]full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.

Што было, тое і ёсць, тое і будзе. Што сталася, тое і ёсць, тое і станецца:

That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.

нічога новага пад сонцам. Часам кажуць пра якую-небудзь рэч: «Вось, гэта новае», але [гэта] ужо раней прамінула ў вяках, што былі перад намі.

Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us.

Няма памяці пра тых, што раней жылі, але ж і пра тых, што потым жыць будуць, не будзе ўспаміну ў тых, якія пасля будуць.

There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.

Я, Эклезіяст, быў царом Ізраэля ў Ерузаліме.

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

І вырашыў у душы сваёй вышукваць і даследаваць мудра ўсё, што дзеецца пад сонцам. Гэты найцяжэйшы занятак даў Бог сынам чалавечым, каб займаліся ім.

And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be [e]exercised.

Убачыў я ўсё, што дзеецца пад сонцам; і, вось жа, усё — марнасць і турбаванне духа.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Што крывое — не можа стацца прамым, а чаго не хапае — не можа быць палічана.

What is crooked cannot be made straight, And what is lacking cannot be numbered.

Прамовіў я ў сэрцы маім, кажучы: «Вось, я ўзвялічыў мудрасць і набыў [яе] больш за ўсіх, што былі да мяне ў Ерузаліме; і розум мой спазнаў вялікую мудрасць і веды».

I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has [f]understood great wisdom and knowledge.”

Аддаў я сэрца маё, каб спазнаць мудрасць і веды, неразумнасць і дурноту, і даведаўся я, што ў гэтым — таксама засмучанасць духа, менавіта таму

And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

ў вялікай мудрасці — вялікая туга і хто павялічвае веды, павялічвае і пакуты.

For in much wisdom is much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
