И вот, в пятнадцатый год правления императора Тиберия, когда в Иудее правителем был Понтий Пилат, в Галилее тетрархом был Ирод, брат его Филипп был тетрархом в Итурее и Трахонитиде, Лисаний — тетрархом в Авилинее,1

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,

а первосвященниками были Анна и Каиафа, — Бог призвал из пустыни Иоанна,2 сына Захарии,

in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

и прошел Иоанн по всем окрестностям вдоль Иордана, проповедуя крещение покаяния во оставление грехов,

And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;

согласно тому, что было написано в книге пророка Исайи: глас вопиющего в пустыне: готовьтесь к встрече Господа, прямые проложите дороги для Него;

as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.

пусть каждое ущелье будет засыпано, каждая гора и каждый холм будут срыты, извилистые дороги станут прямыми, а ухабы на дорогах — заровняются;

‘EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE BROUGHT LOW; THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH;

тогда все люди узрят спасение Божье. (Ис 40:3 — 5).

AND ALL FLESH WILL SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD.’”

И говорил он людям, пришедшим принять крещение от него: о змеиное отродье, кто сказал вам, что вы сможете избежать будущего гнева?

So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Сотворите же достойные плоды покаяния! И не думайте оправдываться тем, что отец у вас — Авраам; уверяю вас: Бог может даже из этих камней воссоздать потомство Аврааму.

“Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.

Уже и топор у корней деревьев лежит, и всякое дерево, не приносящее хороших плодов, будет срублено и брошено в огонь.

“Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

И спросили люди у него: так что же нам делать, чтобы спастись?

And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “Then what shall we do?”

Иоанн же сказал им в ответ: у кого есть два хитона — пусть поделится с тем, у кого нет ни одного, и у кого есть пища, пусть поступает так же.

And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.”

Когда же пришли мытари, чтобы принять крещение, они спросили у него: учитель, а что нам делать?

And some tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

И он сказал им: не взимайте ничего сверх того, что полагается вам.

And he said to them, “Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.”

Воинам же, которые спросили у него: что нам делать? — он ответил: никого не обижайте, не занимайтесь вымогательством, довольствуясь положенной вам платой.

Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, “And what about us, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.”

И все люди, ожидавшие (крещения), размышляли в сердцах своих об Иоанне: уж не Христос ли он?

Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ,

Иоанн же сказал, обращаясь ко всем: я крещу водою ради вашего покаяния, но скоро придет Тот, Кто настолько превосходит меня, что я недостоин даже развязать ремни на сандалиях Его; Он будет крестить вас Духом Святым и огнем.

John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Уже и лопата в руках у Него; Он расчистит гумно своё и соберет зерно в житницу, а солому сожжет огнем неугасимым.

“His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

И о многом ещё благовествовал Иоанн, проповедуя народу,

So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people.

но, кроме того, он обличал Ирода за (брак) с Иродиадой, женой брата Ирода, и вообще за всё зло, содеянное им,

But when Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the wicked things which Herod had done,

и тот ко всему прочему присовокупил ещё и то, что заключил Иоанна в темницу.

Herod also added this to them all: he locked John up in prison.

Между тем среди людей, которые принимали крещение, был и Иисус; и вот, когда Он после крещения молился, разверзлись небеса,

Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened,

и Дух Святой, приняв телесный облик голубки, снизошел на Него, и раздался голос с небес: Ты — Сын Мой возлюбленный, в Тебе Моё благоволение.

and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

3 Иисусу же, когда это свершилось, было немногим более тридцати лет, и был Он, как полагали, Сыном Иосифа, а через него — Илия,

When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli,

the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,

[3.1] Пятнадцатый год правления императора Тиберия (по восточному счету) приходился на время между осенью 27 г. и осенью 28 г. Об Ироде Филиппе см. комментарии к Мф. 2.22. Лисаний — правитель Авилинеи, местности на севере от Дамаска, за пределами Палестины. Итурея и Трахонитида — северо-восточные окраины Палестины.

[3.2] «Бог призвал... Иоанна» — досл.: «было слово Божье к Иоанну».

[3.3] Лука выводит родословную Христа через Илия, основываясь, вероятно, на традиции, по которой брат израильтянина, умершего бездетным, обязан был жениться на его вдове, причем дети от этого брака считались детьми покойного первого мужа. Илий, по сообщению Юлия Африкана, знакомого с записями родословных преданий потомства Давидова, был единоутробным братом Иакова, называемого в Евангелии Матфея отцом святого Иосифа.
