Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

Пройдя через Амфиполь и Аполлонию, они прибыли в Фессалонику. Там была иудейская синагога.

Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

Павел, как обычно, пришел туда к ним и три субботы подряд толковал им отрывки из Писаний.

explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.”

Он разъяснял им и доказывал, что Христу предстояло пострадать и воскреснуть из мертвых: «Христос — тот самый Иисус, о Котором я рассказываю вам!»

And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.

Некоторые из иудеев уверовали и присоединились к Павлу и Силе. Так поступили и многие из эллинов, почитавших Бога, и немалое число женщин из первых семей города.

But the Jews [a]who were not persuaded, [b]becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Это возмутило других иудеев. Прихватив с собой с рынка несколько проходимцев, они устроили в городе беспорядки, всей толпой ринулись к дому Ясона и потребовали выдать апостолов на суд народного собрания.

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.

Но их они там не нашли и потащили Ясона вместе с некоторым братьями к городским властям с криком:— Весь круг земель они вверх дном перевернули, а теперь и сюда явились,

Jason has [c]harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king — Jesus.”

и Ясон их принял у себя! Все они не подчиняются Цезарю и заявляют, будто у них другой царь — Иисус!

And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.

Так они смутили народ и городские власти. Когда те это услышали,

So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

то взяли с Ясона и остальных немало денег и отпустили их.

Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

А братья этой же ночью отправили Павла и Силу в Берею. Оказавшись там, они пошли в иудейскую синагогу.

These were more [d]fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

Люди там оказались благороднее фессалоникийцев, они приняли Слово и день за днем старательно изучали Писания: как именно там сказано?

Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

Многие из них уверовали, а еще немало знатных женщин и мужчин из эллинов.

But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds.

Но когда иудеи из Фессалоники узнали, что и в Береи Павел возвестил Божье слово, то явились и туда сеять раздор и подстрекать толпу.

Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there.

Братья сразу же отправили Павла по морю дальше, а Сила с Тимофеем остались там.

So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.

Братья сопровождали Павла до самых Афин и вернулись обратно. Павел передал через них указание для Силы и Тимофея как можно скорее присоединиться к нему.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was [e]given over to idols.

Пока Павел ожидал их в Афинах, он до глубины души возмущался, насколько этот город был полон идолов.

Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.

В синагоге он беседовал с иудеями и чтущими Бога, а на площади каждый день — с теми, кто ему встречался.

[f]Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this [g]babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.

С ним спорили философы (эпикурейцы и стоики), и одни спрашивали:— Так что же хочет сказать этот пустомеля?А другие отвечали:— Похоже, это проповедник чужих божеств!Это Павел возвещал им евангельскую весть об Иисусе и воскресении.

And they took him and brought him to the [h]Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?

Тогда они повели Павла на Ареопаг с вопросом:— Можем ли мы узнать, что это за новое учение ты нам преподносишь?

For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.”

Для нас это всё звучит как-то странно, и мы хотим понять, что всё это значит.

For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

Ведь для всех афинян, равно как и для живущих в городе иноземцев, нет ничего приятнее, чем говорить или выслушивать что-нибудь новенькое.

Then Paul stood in the midst of the [i]Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious;

Оказавшись перед Ареопагом, Павел сказал:— Афиняне! По всему вижу, что люди вы в высшей степени богобоязненные.

for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:

Я ходил по вашему городу и осматривал святыни, и так я нашел жертвенник, на котором было написано: «Неведомому богу». И теперь я возвещу вам о Том, Кого вы почитаете, даже не зная Его.

God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

Бог создал этот мир и всё, что есть в нем, Он — Господь неба и земли и живет не в рукотворных храмах.

Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.

Он не нуждается ни в чем таком, что могут ему предоставить человеческие руки, но Сам подает всем и жизнь, и дыхание, и всё прочее.

And He has made from one [j]blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,

От одного человека он произвел все народы, расселившиеся по лицу земли, определив заранее и сроки, и пределы их обитания,

so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

чтобы они искали Бога — не найдут ли Его хоть наощупь, ведь Он совсем недалек от каждого из нас.

for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

«Им мы живем, и движемся, и существуем!» Так ведь сказали и некоторые из ваших поэтов: «мы — Его порождение».

Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.

А раз мы порождены Богом, нам не следует думать, будто Божество подобно золоту, серебру или камню, которым придали форму человеческие искусство и воображение.

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

Бог ныне оставляет в прошлом времена былого неведения и повелевает покаяться всем людям, где бы они не жили,

because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

поскольку Он уже назначил день, когда предаст весь круг земель истинному суду, и уже определил Человека, Который будет Судьей — воскресив Его из мертвых, Бог нас в этом удостоверил.

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.”

Когда они услышали про воскресение из мертвых, то одни рассмеялись, а другие сказали:— Твой рассказ об этом мы послушаем еще когда-нибудь.

So Paul departed from among them.

На этом Павел их оставил.

However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

И все же несколько человек последовало за ним и уверовало; среди них был член Ареопага Дионисий, женщина по имени Дамарь и некоторые другие.
