Wenn es nun irgendeine Ermunterung in Christus ‹gibt›, wenn irgendeinen Trost der Liebe, wenn irgendeine Gemeinschaft des Geistes, wenn irgendein herzliches ‹Mitleid›[1] und Erbarmen,

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate?

so erfüllt meine Freude, dass ihr dieselbe Gesinnung und dieselbe Liebe habt, einmütig, eines Sinnes seidⓐ,

Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

nichts aus Eigennutz[2] oder eitler Ruhmsucht ‹tut›ⓑ, sondern dass in der Demut einer den anderen höher achtet als sich selbstⓒ;

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

ein jeder sehe nicht auf das Seine, sondern ein jeder auch auf das der anderenⓓ!

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

[3] Habt diese Gesinnung in[4] euch, die auch in Christus Jesus ‹war›[5]ⓔ,

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

der in Gestalt Gottes warⓕ und es nicht für einen Raub hielt[6], Gott gleich zu sein.

Though he was God,a he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.

Aber er machte sich selbst zu nichts[7]ⓖ und nahm Knechtsgestalt[8] anⓗ, indem er den Menschen gleich geworden ist[9], und der Gestalt nach[10] wie ein Mensch befundenⓘ,

Instead, he gave up his divine privilegesb; he took the humble position of a slavec and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,d

he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Darum hat Gott ihn auch hoch erhobenⓛ und ihm den Namen verliehen[11], der über jeden Namen istⓜ,

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,

damit in dem Namen Jesu jedes Knie sich beugeⓝ, der Himmlischen und Irdischen und Unterirdischen,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

und jede Zunge bekenneⓞ, dass Jesus Christus Herr istⓟ, zur Ehre Gottes, des Vaters.

and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Daher, meine Geliebten — wie ihr allezeit gehorsam gewesen seid, nicht nur in meiner Gegenwart, sondern jetzt ‹noch› viel mehr in meiner Abwesenheitⓠ —, bewirkt euer Heil[12]ⓡ mit Furcht und Zitternⓢ!

Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.

Denn Gott ist es, der in euch wirkt, sowohl das Wollen als auch das Wirken zu ‹seinem› Wohlgefallen[13]ⓣ.

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Tut alles ohne Murrenⓤ und Zweifel,

Do everything without complaining and arguing,

damit ihr tadellos und lauter[14] seidⓥ, unbescholtene Kinder Gottesⓦ inmitten eines verdrehten und verkehrten Geschlechtsⓧ, unter dem ihr leuchtet wie ‹Himmels›lichter in der Weltⓨ,

so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

indem ihr das Wort des Lebens festhaltet, mir ‹als Grund› zum Rühmenⓩ auf den Tag Christiⓐ, dass ich nicht vergeblich gelaufen bin, auch nicht vergeblich gearbeitet habeⓑ.

Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.

Wenn ich aber auch als Trankopfer über das Opferⓒ und den Dienst eures Glaubens gesprengt werdeⓓ, so freue ich mich und freue mich mit euch allenⓔ.

But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God,e just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy.

Ebenso aber freut auch ihr euch, und freut euch mit mirⓕ!

Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy.

Ich hoffe aber im Herrn Jesus, Timotheus bald zu euch zu sendenⓖ, damit auch ich guten Mutes sei, wenn ich um euer Ergehen weiß.

If the Lord Jesus is willing, I hope to send Timothy to you soon for a visit. Then he can cheer me up by telling me how you are getting along.

Denn ich habe keinen ‹ihm› Gleichgesinnten, der aufrichtig für das Eure[15] besorgt sein wird;

I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare.

denn alle suchen das Ihreⓗ, nicht das, was Jesu Christi istⓘ.

All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ.

Ihr kennt aber seine Bewährung, dass er, wie ein Kind dem Vater, mit mir für das Evangelium gedient[16] hatⓙ.

But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News.

Diesen nun hoffe ich sofort zu senden, wenn ich meine Lage übersehe.

I hope to send him to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here.

Ich vertraue aber im Herrn ‹darauf›ⓚ, dass auch ich selbst bald kommen werdeⓛ. —

And I have confidence from the Lord that I myself will come to see you soon.

Ich habe es aber für nötig gehalten, Epaphroditus, meinen Bruder und Mitarbeiter und Mitstreiterⓜ, euren Abgesandtenⓝ und Diener[17] meines Bedarfsⓞ, zu euch zu senden;

Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need.

da er ja sehnlich nach euch allen verlangte und er in Unruhe war, weil ihr gehört hattet, dass er krank war.

I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill.

Denn er war auch krank, dem Tod nahe; aber Gott hat sich über ihn erbarmt, nicht aber nur über ihn, sondern auch über mich, damit ich nicht Traurigkeit auf Traurigkeit hätte.

And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him — and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another.

Ich habe ihn nun umso eiliger gesandt, damit ihr, wenn ihr ihn seht, wieder froh werdet und ich weniger betrübt sei.

So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you.

Nehmt ihn nun auf im Herrn mit aller Freude und haltet solche ‹Brüder› in Ehrenⓟ!

Welcome him in the Lord’s lovef and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve.

Denn um des Werkes Christi willen ist er dem Tod nahe gekommen und hat sein Leben gewagt, um den Mangel in eurem Dienst für mich auszugleichenⓠ.

For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.
