Когда-то на земле существовал всего лишь один язык и одно наречие.

And the whole earth had one language, and the same words.

Через некоторое время, люди, двигаясь с востока, нашли равнину в стране Сеннаар и поселились там.

And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.

И сказали люди: «Давайте сделаем кирпичи из глины и обожжём их в огне, чтобы они стали твёрдыми». Они стали пользоваться кирпичами вместо камней и дёгтем вместо извести.

And they said one to another, Come on, let us make bricks, and burn [them] thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.

Потом люди сказали: «Давайте построим себе город и башню высотой до небес, тем самым прославив себя, и никогда не рассеемся во всей земле».

And they said, Come on, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which [may reach] to the heavens; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

Когда Господь сошёл вниз и увидел город и огромной высоты башню, которую строили люди,

And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men built.

сказал: «Все эти люди говорят на одном языке и объединились, чтобы построить этот город. И это лишь начало их свершений, скоро они смогут делать всё, что задумают.

And Jehovah said, Behold, the people is one, and have all one language; and this have they begun to do. And now will they be hindered in nothing that they meditate doing.

Сойдём же вниз и смешаем их язык, тогда они перестанут понимать друг друга».

Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

Господь рассеял людей по всей земле, и поэтому они не закончили строительство города.

And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth. And they left off building the city.

Именно там Господь смешал язык всей земли, и поэтому этот город называют Вавилоном, так как Господь рассеял оттуда людей по всей земле.

Therefore was its name called Babel; because Jehovah there confounded the language of the whole earth. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth.

Вот родословная семьи Сима. Через два года после потопа, когда Симу было 100 лет, у него родился сын Арфаксад.

These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.

После этого Сим прожил ещё 500 лет, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Shem lived after he had begotten Arphaxad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Арфаксаду было 35 лет, у него родился сын Сала.

And Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Shelah.

После рождения Салы Арфаксад прожил ещё 403 года, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Shelah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Сале было 30 лет, у него родился сын Евер.

And Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

После рождения Евера Сала прожил ещё 403 года, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Shelah lived after he had begotten Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Еверу было 34 года, у него родился сын Фалек.

And Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.

После рождения Фалека Евер прожил ещё 430 лет, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Eber lived after he had begotten Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Фалеку было 30 лет, у него родился сын Рагав.

And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

После рождения Рагава Фалек прожил ещё 209 лет, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Peleg lived after he had begotten Reu two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Рагаву было 32 года, у него родился сын Серух.

And Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.

После рождения Серуха Рагав прожил ещё 207 лет, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Reu lived after he had begotten Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Серуху было 30 лет, у него родился сын Нахор.

And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.

После рождения Нахора Серух прожил ещё 200 лет, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Serug lived after he had begotten Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Нахору было 29 лет, у него родился сын Тера.

And Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.

После рождения Теры Нахор прожил ещё 119 лет, и за это время у него родились другие сыновья и дочери.

And Nahor lived after he had begotten Terah a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

Когда Тере исполнилось 70 лет, у него родились сыновья Аврам, Нахор и Харан.

And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Вот родословная семьи Теры. У Теры родились сыновья Аврам, Нахор и Харан. У Харана родился сын Лот.

And these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

Харан умер в своём родном городе Уре Халдейском ещё при жизни своего отца Теры.

And Haran died before the face of his father Terah in the land of his nativity at Ur of the Chaldeans.

Аврам и Нахор женились, жену Аврама звали Сара, а жену Нахора — Милка. Милка была дочерью Харана, Харан же был отцом Милки и Иски.

And Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.

Сара была бесплодна и потому не имела детей.

And Sarai was barren: she had no child.

Тера забрал свою семью и покинул Ур Вавилонский, чтобы отправиться в Ханаан. Он забрал с собой своего сына Аврама, внука Лота (сына Харана), и свою невестку Сару (жену Аврама). Они добрались до города Харан и решили там поселиться.

And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth together out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan, and came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.

Тера дожил до 205 лет и умер в Харане.

And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
