Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.

Было время, когда весь мир говорил на одном языке, пользовался одними и теми же словами.

It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

Идя на восток,1 люди нашли в стране Шинар равнину и поселились там.

They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

Сказали они тогда друг другу: «Будем делать из глины кирпичи и обжигать их в огне». (Так кирпич стал заменой камню, а природный битум — известковому раствору.)

They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

«Что ж! Сделаем себе имя, построив город с башней до самого неба, — говорили они, — это удержит нас здесь: не будем мы по всему свету рассеяны».

The LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

Тогда сошел ГОСПОДЬ на землю — посмотреть на город и башню, что строили люди,

The LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.

и сказал Он: «Если они — народ единый, с одним для всех языком — такое начали делать, воистину ни одно из их намерений не покажется им невыполнимым!

“Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

Сойдем же к ним и смешаем их язык так, чтобы они не понимали речи друг друга».

So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.

Так рассеял их ГОСПОДЬ оттуда по всей земле, и строительство города прекратилось.

Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.

Вот почему этот город и называется Вавилон2 — там смешал ГОСПОДЬ язык всех жителей земли. С того места Он рассеял людей по всему свету.

These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;

ПОТОМКИ3 СИМА. Когда Симу было сто лет, у него родился сын Арпахшад (это произошло через два года после потопа).

and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.

После рождения Арпахшада Сим жил пятьсот лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;

Арпахшаду было тридцать пять лет, когда у него родился Шелах;

and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Шелаха Арпахшад прожил четыреста три года, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber;

Шелаху было тридцать лет, когда у него родился Эвер;

and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Эвера Шелах прожил четыреста три года, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;

Эверу было тридцать четыре года, когда у него родился Пелег;

and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Пелега Эвер прожил четыреста тридцать лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;

Пелегу было тридцать лет, когда у него родился Реу;

and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Реу Пелег прожил двести девять лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;

Реу было тридцать два года, когда у него родился Саруг;

and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Саруга Реу прожил двести семь лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor;

Саругу было тридцать лет, когда у него родился Нахор;

and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Нахора Саруг прожил двести лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;

Нахору было двадцать девять лет, когда у него родился Терах;4

and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.

после рождения Тераха Нахор прожил сто девятнадцать лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

Терах прожил семьдесят лет, когда у него родились сыновья: Аврам, Нахор и Харан.

Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.

ПОТОМКИ ТЕРАХА. У Тераха родились сыновья: Аврам, Нахор и Харан. У Харана родился сын по имени Лот.

Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

Харан умер на родине, в Уре Халдейском, еще при жизни Тераха, отца своего.

Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

Аврам и Нахор женились: жену Аврама звали Сарой,5 имя жены Нахора Милька, она — дочь Харана, который был и отцом Иски.

Sarai was barren; she had no child.

Сара была бесплодна — не было у нее детей.

Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.

Терах ушел из Ура Халдейского вместе с сыном своим Аврамом, внуком своим Лотом (сыном Харана) и невесткой своей Сарой, женой сына своего Аврама, чтобы идти в землю ханаанскую. Но они дошли до Харана и поселились там.

The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

Терах умер в Харане, когда ему было двести пять лет.
