Однажды Иаков услышал, как между собой разговаривали сыновья Лавана. «Иаков забрал всё, чем владел наш отец. Иаков стал очень богат — и всё это богатство он отобрал у нашего отца», — говорили они.

And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory.

После этого Иаков заметил, что Лаван был уже не так дружелюбен с ним, как раньше.

And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.

В это время Господь сказал Иакову: «Возвращайся обратно в ту землю, где раньше жили твои предки. Я буду с тобой».

And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

Тогда Иаков велел Рахили и Лии встретить его в поле, где он держал свои стада овец и коз,

And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,

и сказал им: «Я вижу, что ваш отец сердится на меня. Прежде он всегда был добр ко мне, но теперь всё не так.

And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.

Вы обе знаете, что я изо всех сил работал на вашего отца.

And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.

А он обманул меня и десять раз менял моё вознаграждение. Но Бог всё это время охранял меня от козней Лавана».

And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.

Один раз Лаван сказал: «Можешь взять себе всех пятнистых козлов, это будет тебе платой». После того как он это сказал, все животные стали приносить пятнистый приплод. Тогда Лаван сказал: «Я оставлю себе всех пятнистых козлов, а ты можешь забирать всех полосатых, это и будет твоё вознаграждение». После того как он это сказал, все животные стали приносить полосатый приплод.

If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.

Это Бог забрал скот у вашего отца и отдал его мне.

Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.

В то время, когда у скота бывает случка, мне привиделся сон, и я увидел, что случаются только полосатые и пятнистые козлы.

And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.

Со мной во сне говорил Божий Ангел и сказал: «Иаков!» «Я здесь», — ответил я.

And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.

«Посмотри, только полосатые и пятнистые козлы и козы случаются, потому что Я видел, сколько Лаван причинил тебе зла, и делаю это, чтобы тебе достались все козлята.

And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.

Я — Бог, явившийся тебе в Вефиле, в том месте, где ты возвёл алтарь, возлил на него оливковое масло и дал Мне обет. И теперь Я хочу, чтобы ты возвратился в ту землю, где был рождён».

I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.

Рахиль и Лия сказали Иакову: «Нашему отцу нечего нам дать, когда он будет умирать.

And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?

Он относился к нам как к чужестранкам, продав нас тебе, а потом растратил все деньги, которые должны были достаться нам!

Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.

Бог отнял у него всё богатство, и теперь оно принадлежит нам и нашим детям, так что делай всё, что Бог тебе велел!»

For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.

Иаков собрался в дорогу, посадил своих сыновей и жён на верблюдов,

Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;

и они отправились в обратный путь в землю Ханаанскую, где жил его отец. Впереди шли стада, которыми владел Иаков. Он забрал с собой всё, что приобрёл, пока жил в Падан-Араме.

And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.

В это время Лаван отправился стричь шерсть со своих овец. Пока отца не было, Рахиль зашла к нему в дом и украла принадлежавших ему идолов.

And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.

Иаков перехитрил арамеянина Лавана: не сказав ему, что уходит,

And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.

быстро собрал свою семью и всё, чем владел, и ушёл из его земли. Иаков пересёк реку Евфрат и направился к горам Галаада.

So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.

Через три дня Лаван узнал, что Иаков бежал.

And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.

Тогда он собрал своих людей и отправился в погоню за Иаковом, и семь дней спустя настиг его недалеко от гор Галаада.

And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.

В ту ночь Бог явился Лавану во сне и сказал: «Будь осторожен! Не замышляй ничего злого против Иакова».

And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

На следующее утро Лаван настиг Иакова. Иаков разбил лагерь на одном из холмов, а Лаван, вместе со своими людьми, остановился близ гор Галаада.

Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.

«Почему ты обманул меня? — спросил Лаван Иакова. — Почему забрал моих дочерей, словно захваченных в бою пленниц?

And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?

Зачем убежал, ничего не сказав? Если бы ты дал мне знать, я бы устроил празднество в твою честь с песнями, танцами и музыкой.

Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?

Ты же мне не дал даже поцеловать моих внуков и дочерей на прощание. Безрассудно это с твоей стороны.

And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.

Клянусь Богом, в моей власти повредить тебе, но только прошлой ночью мне во сне явился Бог твоего отца и предупредил меня, чтобы я не замышлял ничего против тебя.

It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

Я знаю, что ты ушёл, потому что хочешь возвратиться домой. Но зачем ты украл богов из моего дома?»

And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?

Иаков ответил: «Я ушёл, не сказав тебе, потому что боялся; я думал, что ты заберёшь у меня своих дочерей,

And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.

но я не брал твоих богов. Если ты найдёшь здесь того, кто взял твоих богов, этот человек будет убит. Твои люди будут мне свидетелями: можешь искать то, что принадлежит тебе, и забрать всё своё». (Иаков не знал, что Рахиль украла богов Лавана).

With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.

Тогда Лаван пошёл обыскивать лагерь Иакова. Он обыскал шатёр Иакова, потом шатёр Лии, потом обыскал шатёр, где были две рабыни, но не нашёл своих домашних богов. После этого Лаван пришёл в шатёр Рахили,

And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.

но она спрятала богов в седло своего верблюда, сама же села поверх. Лаван обыскал весь шатёр, но не нашёл богов.

Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.

Затем Рахиль сказала отцу: «Отец, не гневайся, что я не могу встать перед тобой, у меня месячные». И так обыскал Лаван весь лагерь, но не нашёл своих идолов.

And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.

Иаков был очень рассержен и сказал Лавану: «Что я такого сделал? Какой нарушил закон? Какое ты имеешь право устраивать за мной погоню и задерживать меня?

And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?

Ты обыскал всё моё имущество и не нашел ничего, принадлежащего тебе. Если ты что-то нашёл, то покажи мне, положи это вот сюда, чтобы все наши люди могли видеть, и пусть они рассудят, кто из нас прав.

Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.

Я работал на тебя двадцать лет, и за всё это время не умер ни один новорожденный козлёнок, ни один новорожденный ягнёнок, и я не брал баранов из твоих стад для еды.

This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.

Всякий раз, когда дикие звери задирали овцу, я сам платил за неё, ни разу не принёс тебе задранную скотину и не сказал, что это не моя вина, меня же грабили днём и ночью.

That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.

Днём солнце отнимало у меня силы, а ночью сон бежал от глаз моих из-за холода.

Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.

Двадцать лет я как раб трудился на тебя — первые четырнадцать лет за двух дочерей, а последние шесть лет за твой скот. Ты же за это время десять раз менял мою плату.

Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.

Но со мной был Бог моих предков, Бог Авраама и Страх Исаака. Если бы Бог не был со мной, ты отослал бы меня ни с чем. Но Бог видел, как я тружусь, как бедствую, и прошлой ночью Бог доказал мою правоту».

Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.

Лаван сказал Иакову: «Эти женщины — мои дочери, и дети их принадлежат мне, и весь этот скот — мой: всё, что ты здесь видишь, принадлежит мне. Но я не могу сделать ничего, чтобы удержать моих дочерей и их детей,

And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?

поэтому я готов заключить с тобой договор; давай положим здесь груду камней в знак нашего соглашения».

Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.

Тогда Иаков нашёл большой камень и положил его там в знак того, что заключает договор,

And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.

и велел своим людям найти ещё камней и положить их грудой, а потом они ели около этой груды камней.

And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.

Лаван назвал это место Иегар-Сагадуфа, Иаков же назвал его Галаадом.

And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.

Лаван обратился к Иакову с такими словами: «Эта груда камней поможет нам обоим помнить о нашем договоре». Потому-то Иаков и назвал это место Галаадом.

And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;

«Пусть Господь будет свидетелем нам обоим, когда мы разойдёмся в разные стороны», — сказал тогда Лаван и назвал это место Мицфа.

And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.

Затем Лаван сказал: «Помни, если обидишь моих дочерей, Бог накажет тебя. И если возьмёшь себе других жён, помни, что Бог — свидетель.

If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.

Вот камни, которые я положил между нами, и вот особый камень в знак того, что у нас с тобой договор.

And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee;

Эта груда камней и этот особый камень помогут нам помнить о нашем договоре. Я никогда не перейду к тебе за эти камни, чтобы воевать с тобой, и ты не должен переходить ко мне, чтобы воевать со мной.

This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.

Пусть осудит нас Бог Авраама, Бог Нахора и Бог их предков за вину нашу, если мы нарушим этот договор». Отец Иакова, Исаак, называл Бога «Страхом», и потому Иаков поклялся этим именем.

The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.

Потом Иаков заколол животное и принес его в жертву на горе, а затем созвал всех своих родственников, чтобы они ели с ним вместе. Поев, они заночевали на горе.

Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.

Рано утром следующего дня Лаван поцеловал на прощание своих внуков и дочерей, благословил их и отправился домой.

And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
