Братья, я хочу, чтобы вы знали о том, что все наши праотцы находились под облачным столбом и что все они прошли через море.

I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters,a about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground.

Они все были крещены в Моисея в облаке и в море.

In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses.

Они все ели одну и ту же духовную пищу

All of them ate the same spiritual food,

и пили одно и то же духовное питье. Они пили из духовной скалы, которая сопровождала их, и скалой этой был Христос.

and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ.

Но к большинству из них Бог не был благосклонен, и их тела усеяли пустыню.

Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

А это случилось как пример для нас, чтобы мы не желали зла, как желали они.

These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did,

Не поклоняйтесь идолам, как это делали некоторые из них. Ведь написано: "Люди сели есть и пить, а потом встали играть".

or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”b

Среди нас не должно быть распутства, которому предавались некоторые из них, что и привело к гибели двадцати трех тысяч человек.

And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.

Нам нельзя испытывать Господа, как некоторые из них делали и потом погибли от укусов змей.

Nor should we put Christc to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites.

Не ропщите, как это делали некоторые из них, за что были погублены губителем.

And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.

Все это случилось с ними как прообраз, а написано это для назидания нам. Ведь мы живем в последнее время.

These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.

Так что если кому-то кажется, что он уверенно стоит, то пусть бережется, чтобы не упасть!

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.

Все испытания, которые вы встречали до сих пор, были не чем иным, как обычными человеческими испытаниями. Бог никогда не допустит, чтобы вы были испытываемы сверх сил, и Он верен своим обещаниям. Когда вас постигает испытание, Он предлагает вам и выход, так что вы сможете перенести все.

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Поэтому, дорогие братья, избегайте идолопоклонства.

So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.

Я говорю вам как разумным людям, рассудите сами.

You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true.

Разве чаша благословения, которую мы благословляем, не приобщает нас к крови Христа? И хлеб, который мы преломляем, не приобщает ли нас к телу Христа?

When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ?

Хлеб один, и мы, как бы много нас ни было, составляем одно тело, потому делили один хлеб.

And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body.

Посмотрите на израильский народ: разве всех, кто ест принесенное в жертву, не объединяет один жертвенник?

Think about the people of Israel. Weren’t they united by eating the sacrifices at the altar?

Конечно, я не говорю, что идол или же принесенное в жертву идолам имеет какое-либо значение.

What am I trying to say? Am I saying that food offered to idols has some significance, or that idols are real gods?

Нет, но дело в том, что язычники приносят свои жертвы демонам, а не Богу, а я не хочу, чтобы вы становились сообщниками демонам.

No, not at all. I am saying that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons.

Ведь не можете же вы пить одновременно из чаши Господней и из чаши демонской, нельзя быть в одно и то же время за столом Господа и за столом демонов.

You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.

Или мы думаем, что можем безнаказанно раздражать Господа? Разве мы сильнее Его?

What? Do we dare to rouse the Lord’s jealousy? Do you think we are stronger than he is?

Все мне позволено, но не все полезно. Все позволено, но не все служит к созиданию.

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”d — but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything” — but not everything is beneficial.

Пусть никто не заботится только лишь о том, чтобы ему было хорошо, заботьтесь более о благе других.

Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.

Ешьте всё, что продается на рынке, со спокойной совестью,

So you may eat any meat that is sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience.

потому что "земля и то, что наполняет ее, принадлежит Господу".

For “the earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it.”e

Если неверующий пригласит вас на обед, то ешьте всё, что вам предложат, не задавая вопросов, со спокойной совестью.

If someone who isn’t a believer asks you home for dinner, accept the invitation if you want to. Eat whatever is offered to you without raising questions of conscience.

Но если вам при этом скажут: "Это жертвенное мясо", — то не ешьте ради того, кто это сказал, и ради совести, —

(But suppose someone tells you, “This meat was offered to an idol.” Don’t eat it, out of consideration for the conscience of the one who told you.

я имею в виду совесть другого человека, а не свою собственную. Ведь моя свобода не может быть судима чужой совестью.

It might not be a matter of conscience for you, but it is for the other person.) For why should my freedom be limited by what someone else thinks?

Если я с благодарностью принимаю пищу, почему я должен быть осуждаем за то, за что я благодарю Бога?

If I can thank God for the food and enjoy it, why should I be condemned for eating it?

Стало быть, что бы вы ни делали, едите вы или пьете, делайте так, чтобы был прославляем Бог.

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Не будьте ни для кого камнем преткновения, ни для евреев, ни для язычников, ни для Божьей церкви.

Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentilesf or the church of God.

Старайтесь, как я, угождать всем во всем. Я ищу блага не самому себе, а многим другим, чтобы они были спасены.

I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.
