Что же сказать об Аврааме, нашем предке по плоти?

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter?

Если Авраам стал праведником за свои дела, ему есть чем хвалиться, но только не перед Богом.

If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about — but not before God.

А что говорит Писание? «Поверил Авраам Богу, и это вменилось ему в праведность».

What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”a

Это работник получает плату по договору, а не по благодати.

Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation.

Но праведником здесь признается верующий — не по трудам, а по вере в Того, Кто может сделать из нечестивца праведника.

However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

Так и Давид говорит о блаженстве человека, которого Бог счел праведником не по его поступкам:

David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

«Блаженны те, чьи беззакония прощены и чьи грехи покрыты,

“Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

блажен муж, которому Господь не вменит греха».

Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”b

А это блаженство — оно связано с обрезанием или нет? Мы уже говорили: «Аврааму вера вменилась в праведность».

Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.

И когда же это случилось: до того, как Авраам был обрезан, или после? Нет, еще до того.

Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before!

Обрезание для него стало знаком, запечатлевшим праведность, полученную им по вере еще прежде обрезания. И так он стал предком для всех необрезанных, кто принимает веру, и эта вера вменяется им в праведность.

And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.

Затем он стал и предком всех обрезанных, если они не просто обрезаны, но и идут по следам отца нашего Авраама, а для него вера была прежде обрезания.

And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

Аврааму и его потомству было обещано, что они унаследуют весь мир — и это не по закону, а благодаря праведности, которая от веры.

It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

Если наследство причитается по закону, тут не во что было бы верить и нечего обещать.

For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless,

Закон приводит в действие кару, но если нет закона, то нет и понятия о преступлении.

because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

Итак, обещание дается тому, кто верит — это благодатный дар. Оно надежно для всякого потомства Авраама, нашего общего отца — не только тем, кто следует закону, но и тем, кто разделил его веру,

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring — not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.

как и написано: «отцом множества народов сделал Я тебя». Авраам поверил в Бога, Который возвращает жизнь мертвым и осуществляет то, чего еще нет — и вот кем Авраам стал перед Богом.

As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”c He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed — the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.

Когда не было никакой надежды, он надеялся и верил, что станет предком многих народов, ведь ему было сказано: «столь многочисленным будет потомство твое».

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”d

Вера его не иссякла, хотя он и знал, что он, столетний старик, неспособен к зачатию, как и его жена Сарра не могла выносить дитя.

Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead — since he was about a hundred years old — and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.

Но он не сомневался в Божьем обещании, не терял веры, а укреплялся ей, воздавая славу Богу,

Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,

в убеждении, что Бог может исполнить обещанное.

being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

И это было вменено ему в праведность.

This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

«Вменено в праведность» — так написано не только о нем,

The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone,

но и о нас. То же будет и с нашей верой в Господа: Он воскресил из мертвых Иисуса,

but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness — for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

Который предан был смерти за наши преступления и воскрес ради нашей праведности.

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
