Тогда Елифаз из Фемана ответил:

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

«Разве Господу полезен важный человек? Полезен ли Ему мудрец?

Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

Что радости Всемогущему в праведности твоей? Какая польза Ему, даже если ты и подчинился Его воле?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

Разве из-за набожности твоей Он поучает тебя и судит?

Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

Должно быть, велики преступления твои, и нет конца твоим грехам!

Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

Верно, ты без причины залоги брал от брата твоего и с бедного снимал одежду под залог?

For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

Может быть, не дал воды ты утомлённому и отказался голодному дать хлеб.

Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

Был ты могущественным человеком, владел землею и уважаем был.

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

Но, может быть, ты отсылал вдов с пустыми руками или обманывал сирот.

Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Потому и ловушки вокруг тебя, потому и страшит тебя всё,

Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

потому и темно тебе, что не видишь, потому и заливает наводнение тебя.

Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

Не выше ли небес живёт Бог? Не смотрит ли Он вниз на самую высокую звезду?

Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

А ты всё же говоришь: „Что знает Бог? Может ли Он видеть и судить нас сквозь темень облаков?

And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

Густые облака Его от нас закрыли, и не видит нас Он, когда идёт по небосводу”.

Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

Будешь ли ты протаптывать и дальше ту древнюю тропу, проложенную злобными людьми?

Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

Погибли они до срока, унесло наводнение их.

Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

„Оставь нас, — говорили они Господу. — Что Всемогущий для нас может сделать?”

Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

А ведь именно Господь наполнил их дома добром. Так что злобных советчиков я сторонюсь.

Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Видят праведные гибель злобных и радуются, смеются невинные и говорят:

The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

„Несомненно, наши враги уничтожены, огонь пожирает их богатство”.

Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

Иов, покорись Господу и будь с Ним в мире, и тогда благоденствие придёт к тебе.

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

Прими повеления из Его уст и в сердце положи Его слова.

Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

Если вернешься к Всемогущему, то возродишься. Если ты избавишь дом свой от греха,

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

и с золотом как с пылью будешь обращаться, и наравне с камнями будешь ты его ценить,

Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

тогда Всемогущий станет золотом твоим, самым чистым серебром для тебя.

Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

Тогда ты найдёшь наслаждение во Всемогущем и поднимешь к Богу лицо своё.

For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

Ты будешь Ему молиться, и Он услышит тебя, и все свои обеты ты исполнишь.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

Что ты задумаешь, всё сбудется, и будущий твой путь весь светом будет озарён.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

Ты возвысишь тех, кто пал, и ты спасёшь смиренных.

When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

Ты поможешь тем, кто совершал грехи, они будут спасены чистотой твоей!»

He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
