Павел сказал: «Братья и отцы, выслушайте теперь, что я скажу в свою защиту».

“Brothers and esteemed fathers,” Paul said, “listen to me as I offer my defense.”

Услышав, что Павел заговорил с ними на арамейском языке, они стали ещё тише. Тогда он продолжил:

When they heard him speaking in their own language,a the silence was even greater.

«Я иудей, рождённый в Тарсе, в Киликии, но получивший воспитание здесь, в этом городе. Моим наставником был Гамалиил, который тщательно обучил меня закону наших предков. Я был усердным служителем Божьим, таким же, как и вы сегодня.

Then Paul said, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, and I was brought up and educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel. As his student, I was carefully trained in our Jewish laws and customs. I became very zealous to honor God in everything I did, just like all of you today.

Я подвергал смертельным гонениям последователей Пути, брал под стражу мужчин и женщин и бросал их в темницы.

And I persecuted the followers of the Way, hounding some to death, arresting both men and women and throwing them in prison.

Это могут подтвердить первосвященники и совет старейшин. Именно от них я получил письма к братьям-иудеям в Дамаске, чтобы привести последователей Иисуса в Иерусалим для наказания».

The high priest and the whole council of elders can testify that this is so. For I received letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the followers of the Way from there to Jerusalem, in chains, to be punished.

«Но вот что приключилось со мной по дороге в Дамаск. Когда я был уже недалеко от этого города, около полудня яркий свет с неба засиял вокруг меня.

“As I was on the road, approaching Damascus about noon, a very bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around me.

Я упал на землю и услышал голос, говорящий мне: „Савл, Савл! Почему ты преследуешь Меня?”

I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

Я спросил: „Кто ты, Господи?” И голос ответил: „Я — Иисус из Назарета, Которого ты преследуешь”.

“‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked. “And the voice replied, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene,b the one you are persecuting.’

Те же, кто были со мной, не слышали голоса, но видели свет.

The people with me saw the light but didn’t understand the voice speaking to me.

Я спросил: „Что мне делать, Господи?” И Господь ответил: „Встань и иди в Дамаск, и там тебе будет сказано, что Я предрешил для тебя”.

“I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ “And the Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are to do.’

Я ничего не видел, так как яркий свет ослепил меня, и мои спутники, взяв меня за руку, довели до Дамаска.

“I was blinded by the intense light and had to be led by the hand to Damascus by my companions.

В Дамаске ко мне пришёл человек по имени Анания, набожный и послушный Закону Моисея, о ком хорошо отзывались все иудеи, живущие там.

A man named Ananias lived there. He was a godly man, deeply devoted to the law, and well regarded by all the Jews of Damascus.

Он подошёл ко мне и сказал: „Брат Савл! Прозри!” И тотчас же я увидел его.

He came and stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, regain your sight.’ And that very moment I could see him!

Анания сказал мне: „Бог наших предков избрал тебя узнать его волю, увидеть Праведного и услышать голос из уст Его.

“Then he told me, ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and hear him speak.

Ты будешь свидетелем Ему перед всеми людьми в том, что ты видел и слышал.

For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard.

Так чего же ты ждёшь? Встань и крестись, омой грехи, призывая имя Его”.

What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’

Когда я вернулся в Иерусалим, то во время молитвы в храме мне было видение,

“After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the Temple and fell into a trance.

в котором я увидел Иисуса. Он сказал мне: „Поспеши и немедленно оставь Иерусалим, потому что люди здесь не примут твоё свидетельство обо Мне”.

I saw a vision of Jesusc saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem, for the people here won’t accept your testimony about me.’

И я ответил: „Господи, эти люди знают, что я ходил по синагогам, хватая и избивая верующих в Тебя.

“‘But Lord,’ I argued, ‘they certainly know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you.

И когда проливалась кровь твоего свидетеля Стефана, я стоял тут же, поощряя это и охраняя одежды убивавших его”.

And I was in complete agreement when your witness Stephen was killed. I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned him.’

Тогда Всевышний ответил мне: „Иди! Я отправлю тебя далеко, к язычникам”».

“But the Lord said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles!’”

До этого иудеи слушали Павла, но при этих словах стали кричать: «Смерть ему! Он недостоин жить!»

The crowd listened until Paul said that word. Then they all began to shout, “Away with such a fellow! He isn’t fit to live!”

Пока они кричали, сбрасывали с себя верхнюю одежду и бросали пыль в воздух,

They yelled, threw off their coats, and tossed handfuls of dust into the air.

военный трибун приказал отвести Павла в крепость и высечь плетью. Он хотел подвергнуть Павла допросу, чтобы выяснить, почему иудеи так кричали на него.

The commander brought Paul inside and ordered him lashed with whips to make him confess his crime. He wanted to find out why the crowd had become so furious.

Но, когда его растянули ремнями, чтобы высечь, Павел сказал стоявшему там центуриону: «Разве по закону без суда бить римского гражданина?»

When they tied Paul down to lash him, Paul said to the officerd standing there, “Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been tried?”

Услышав это, центурион пошёл к трибуну и сказал: «Что вы собираетесь сделать? Ведь этот человек — римский гражданин!»

When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked, “What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen!”

Трибун подошёл к нему и спросил: «Скажи, ты что же — римский гражданин?» «Да», — ответил Павел.

So the commander went over and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I certainly am,” Paul replied.

Трибун сказал: «Мне стоило больших денег приобрести это гражданство». Павел же произнёс: «А я был рождён гражданином».

“I am, too,” the commander muttered, “and it cost me plenty!” Paul answered, “But I am a citizen by birth!”

Те, кто собирались допросить Павла, тут же отступились от него, а начальник испугался, узнав, что связал римского гражданина.

The soldiers who were about to interrogate Paul quickly withdrew when they heard he was a Roman citizen, and the commander was frightened because he had ordered him bound and whipped.

На следующий день, желая точно выяснить, в чём иудеи обвиняют Павла, трибун повелел собраться главным священникам и всему синедриону. Сняв с Павла цепи, трибун поставил его перед собранием.

The next day the commander ordered the leading priests into session with the Jewish high council.e He wanted to find out what the trouble was all about, so he released Paul to have him stand before them.
