Павел пришел в Дербу, из Дербы — в Листру. В Листре был ученик по имени Тимофей, сын верующей иудейки и эллина.

Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek.

О нем были самые добрые отзывы от братьев в Листре и Иконии.

The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.

Павел пожелал взять его с собой и в угоду тамошним иудеям обрезал: все знали, что его отец эллин.

Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Обходя города, они призывали церкви держаться требований, утвержденных апостолами и пресвитерами в Иерусалиме.

As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey.

Церкви укреплялись верой, с каждым днем их становилось все больше.

So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

Они пересекли Фригию и Галатийский край, и не было им от Святого Духа позволения проповедовать Слово в Азии.

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.

Дойдя до Мисии, они направились было в Вифинию, но Дух Иисуса их не пустил.

When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.

Тогда через Мисию они спустились к Троаде.

So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.

Ночью Павлу было видение. Пришел македонец и просит: «Нам в Македонии нужна твоя помощь. Приходи».

During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

После этого видения мы тут же отправились в Македонию. Не было никаких сомнений, что Сам Бог призывает нас возвестить там евангелие.

After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Отплыв из Троады, мы прямиком прибыли в Самофракию, а на следующий день — в Неаполь.

From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis.

Оттуда — в Филиппы, колонию римлян и центр той части Македонии. Здесь мы пробыли несколько дней.

From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that districta of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

В субботу мы отправились за город к реке, где, судя по всему, было место молитвы. Мы подсели в кружок женщин и заговорили с ними.

On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.

Нас с интересом слушала одна женщина из Фиатиры, по имени Лидия, торговка пурпурной тканью, почитавшая Бога. Господь помог ей близко к сердцу принять слова Павла.

One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.

Она крестилась вместе со своими домочадцами и потом стала просить: «Если вы считаете меня верной Господу, располагайтесь у меня и живите». И уговорила нас.

When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

Как-то раз по дороге к месту молитвы к нам пристала одна челядинка, одержимая духом. Она умела предсказывать судьбу, что приносило ее хозяевам приличный доход.

Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.

Женщина ходила за Павлом и кричала нам в спину: «Эти люди — рабы Бога Всевышнего. Они возвещают вам Путь спасения».

She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.”

Так продолжалось изо дня в день. Наконец, Павел не выдержал, повернулся к духу и сказал: «Именем Иисуса Христа повелеваю тебе: вон из нее!» — и тот сразу убрался.

She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.

Хозяева челядинки поняли, что прежних видов на доход у них больше нет. Они схватили Павла и Силу и поволокли на площадь к судебным властям.

When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.

Привели к преторам и говорят: «Эти иудеи будоражат наш город,

They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar

Навязывают людям обычаи, которые нам, римлянам, нельзя ни перенимать, ни соблюдать».

by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”

Толпа тоже ополчилась на них. Преторы приказали раздеть их и бить батогами.

The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods.

И дали им батогов изрядно, а затем бросили в тюрьму и приказали тюремщику стеречь со всей строгостью.

After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.

Выполняя распоряжение, тот отвел апостолов во внутреннюю тюрьму и забил им ноги в колодки.

When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

Время шло к полуночи. Павел и Сила молились и пели Божьи псалмы. Узники слушали.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Вдруг началось сильное землетрясение. Сдвинулось основание тюрьмы, сразу распахнулись все двери и рассыпались цепи на узниках.

Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.

Тюремщик проснулся и увидел открытые двери. Он выхватил меч и хотел наложить на себя руки, подумал, что узники разбежались.

The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.

Но когда Павел закричал во весь голос: «Погоди убивать себя. Мы все здесь!» —

But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

Он потребовал огня, прибежал к Павлу и Силе и, трясясь, пал им в ноги.

The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.

Выведя их наружу, он сказал: «Судари мои! Что мне сделать, чтобы спастись?».

He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

Они ответили: «Верь в Господа Иисуса — спасешь и себя, и весь свой дом» —

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved — you and your household.”

И Слово Господне растолковали и ему самому, и всем его домочадцам.

Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.

В тот ночной час он не отпускал их от себя, омыл им раны и вместе со всей семьей тогда же принял крещение.

At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.

Он привел их к себе домой и выставил угощение. Все в доме радовались, все поверили в Бога.

The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God — he and his whole household.

С наступлением дня преторы послали судебных исполнителей сказать: «Отпусти их».

When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.”

Тюремщик пришел с этой новостью к Павлу: «Преторы велели вас отпустить. Стало быть, выходите и ступайте с миром».

The jailer told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”

Но Павел сказал: «Римских граждан без суда на площади бить и бросать в тюрьму, а теперь без огласки отпускать?! Не будет этого! Пусть придут и сами нас освободят».

But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”

Преторы, которые узнали об этих словах Павла от судебных исполнителей, перепугались, что так вышло с римскими гражданами.

The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.

Они пришли с извинениями, освободили их, но просили уйти из города.

They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.

Из тюрьмы Павел и Сила вернулись к Лидии. Они повидались с братьями, снабдили их наставлениями и ушли.

After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.
