Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

Не мнози учителие бывайте, братие моя, ведяще, яко болшее осуждение приимем,

For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

много бо согрешаем вси. Аще кто в слове не согрешает, сей совершен муж, силен обуздати и все тело.

If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.

Се бо и конем узды во уста влагаем, да повинуются нам, и все тело их обращаем:

Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

се, и корабли велицы суще и от жестоких ветров заточаеми, обращаются малым кормилцем, аможе стремление правящаго хощет:

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

такожде же и язык мал уд есть, и вельми хвалится. Се мал огнь, и коль велики вещи сожигает.

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life,a and set on fire by hell.b

И язык огнь, лепота неправды: сице и язык водворяется во удех наших, скверня все тело, и паля коло рождения нашего, и опаляяся от геенны:

For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,

всяко бо естество зверей же и птиц, гад же и рыб, укрощается и укротится естеством человеческим,

but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

языка же никтоже может от человек укротити: не удержимо бо зло, исполнь яда смертоносна.

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.

Тем благословляем Бога и Отца, и тем кленем человеки бывшыя по подобию Божию:

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers,c these things ought not to be so.

от техже уст исходит благословение и клятва. Не подобает, братие моя возлюбленная, сим тако бывати.

Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?

Еда ли источник от единаго устия источает сладкое и горькое?

Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Еда может, братие моя, смоковница маслины творити, или виноградная лоза смоквы? такожде ни един источник слану и сладку творит воду.

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

Кто премудр и худог в вас, да покажет от добраго жития дела своя в кротости и премудрости.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

Аще же зависть горьку имате и рвение в сердцах ваших, не хвалитеся, ни лжите на истину:

This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

несть сия премудрость свыше низходящи, но земна, душевна, бесовска:

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

идеже бо зависть и рвение, ту нестроение и всяка зла вещь.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

А яже свыше премудрость, первее убо чиста есть, потом же мирна, кротка, благопокорлива, исполнь милости и плодов благих, несуменна и нелицемерна.

And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Плод же правды в мире сеется творящым мир.
