Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

Ѿвѣща́въ же є҆лїфа́зъ ѳемані́тинъ, речѐ:

“Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.

не гд҇ь ли є҆́сть наѹча́ѧй ра́зѹмѹ и҆ хи́трости;

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are in the right, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless?

И҆́бо ко́е попече́нїе гд҇ѹ, а҆́ще ты̀ бы́лъ є҆сѝ дѣ́лы непоро́ченъ; и҆лѝ (ка́ѧ) по́льза, ѩ҆́кѡ про́стъ твори́ти бѹ́деши пѹ́ть тво́й;

Is it for your fear of him that he reproves you and enters into judgment with you?

и҆лѝ ѡ҆пасе́нїе и҆мѣ́ѧ ѿ тебє̀ ѡ҆бличи́тъ тѧ̀ и҆ вни́детъ съ тобо́ю въ сѹ́дъ;

Is not your evil abundant? There is no end to your iniquities.

Е҆да̀ ѕло́ба твоѧ̀ є҆́сть не мно́га; безчи́сленнїи же твоѝ сѹ́ть грѣсѝ;

For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing.

Въ зало́гъ бо и҆ма́лъ є҆сѝ ѿ бра́тїи твоеѧ̀ вотщѐ, ѻ҆де́ждѹ же наги́хъ ѿнима́лъ є҆сѝ,

You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.

нижѐ водо́ю жа́ждѹщихъ напои́лъ є҆сѝ, но а҆́лчѹщихъ лиши́лъ є҆сѝ хлѣ́ба:

The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man lived in it.

ѹ҆дивлѧ́лсѧ же є҆сѝ нѣ́кихъ лицѹ̀ и҆ поверга́лъ є҆сѝ ѹ҆бо́гихъ на землѝ:

You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed.

вдови҄цы же ѿпѹсти́лъ є҆сѝ тщы̀ и҆ сирѡты̀ ѡ҆ѕло́билъ є҆сѝ.

Therefore snares are all around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you,

Сегѡ̀ ра́ди ѡ҆быдо́ша тѧ̀ сѣ҄ти, и҆ поспѣшѝ на тѧ̀ ра́ть вели́ка:

or darkness, so that you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.

свѣ́тъ тебѣ̀ тма̀ бы́сть, ѹ҆снѹ́вшаго же вода́ тѧ покры̀.

“Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are!

Е҆да̀ на высо́кихъ живы́й не призира́етъ; ѹ҆кори́зною же возносѧ́щихсѧ смирѝ.

But you say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the deep darkness?

И҆ ре́клъ є҆сѝ: что̀ разѹмѣ̀ крѣ́пкїй; и҆лѝ во мра́цѣ разсѹ́дитъ;

Thick clouds veil him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the vault of heaven.’

Ѡ҆́блакъ покро́въ є҆гѡ̀, и҆ неѹви́димь бѹ́детъ, и҆ крѹ́гъ небесѐ ѡ҆бхо́дитъ.

Will you keep to the old way that wicked men have trod?

Е҆да̀ стезю̀ дре́внюю сохрани́ши, въ ню́же ходи́ша мѹ́жїе непра́ведни,

They were snatched away before their time; their foundation was washed away.a

и҆̀же ѩ҆́ти бы́ша пре́жде вре́мене; рѣка̀ текѹ́щаѧ ѡ҆снова҄нїѧ и҆́хъ,

They said to God, ‘Depart from us,’ and ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’b

глаго́лющїи: что̀ сотвори́тъ на́мъ гд҇ь; и҆лѝ что̀ нанесе́тъ на ны̀ вседержи́тель;

Yet he filled their houses with good things — but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

И҆́же и҆спо́лнилъ є҆́сть до́мы и҆́хъ благи́ми: совѣ́тъ же нечести́выхъ дале́че ѿ негѡ̀.

The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent one mocks at them,

Ви́дѣвше пра́вєдницы возсмѣѧ́шасѧ, непоро́ченъ же глѹмлѧ́шесѧ и҆̀мъ:

saying, ‘Surely our adversaries are cut off, and what they left the fire has consumed.’

не поги́бе ли и҆мѣ́нїе и҆́хъ, и҆ ѡ҆ста́нки и҆́хъ поѧ́стъ ѻ҆́гнь;

“Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you.

Бѹ́ди ѹ҆̀бо тве́рдъ, а҆́ще претерпи́ши, пото́мъ пло́дъ тво́й бѹ́детъ во благи́хъ.

Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

Прїими́ же и҆з̾ ѹ҆́стъ є҆гѡ̀ и҆зрѣче́нїе и҆ воспрїимѝ словеса̀ є҆гѡ̀ въ се́рдце твоѐ.

If you return to the Almighty you will be built up; if you remove injustice far from your tents,

А҆́ще же ѡ҆брати́шисѧ и҆ смири́ши себѐ пред̾ гд҇емъ, и҆ дале́че сотвори́ши ѿ жили́ща твоегѡ̀ непра́вдѹ,

if you lay gold in the dust, and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed,

и҆ положе́нъ бѹ́деши на пе́рсти въ ка́мени, и҆ ѩ҆́коже ка́мень пото́ка ѡ҆фі́рска.

then the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver.

Бѹ́детъ ѹ҆̀бо тебѣ̀ вседержи́тель помо́щникъ ѿ вра҄гъ, чи́ста же сотвори́тъ тѧ̀ ѩ҆́коже сребро̀ разжже́но,

For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.

пото́мъ дерзнове́нїе воз̾имѣ́еши пред̾ бг҃омъ, воззрѣ́въ ве́селѡ на не́бо.

You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows.

Помо́льшѹсѧ же тебѣ̀ къ немѹ̀, ѹ҆слы́шитъ тѧ̀, да́стъ же тѝ ѡ҆бѣ́ты твоѧ҄ возда́ти,

You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways.

ѹ҆стро́итъ же тѝ жили́ще пра́вды, на пѹте́хъ же твои́хъ бѹ́детъ свѣ́тъ:

For when they are humbled you say, ‘It is because of pride’;c but he saves the lowly.

ѩ҆́кѡ смири́лъ є҆сѝ себѐ, тогда̀ рече́ши: вознесе́сѧ, и҆ пони́кша ѻ҆чи́ма спасе́тъ,

He delivers even the one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”

и҆зба́витъ непови́ннаго, и҆ спасе́шисѧ чи́стыма рѹка́ма твои́ма.
