Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

Ѿвѣща́въ же є҆лїфа́зъ ѳемані́тинъ, речѐ:

“Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

є҆да̀ премѹ́дрый да́стъ ѿвѣ́тъ разѹ́менъ на вѣ́тръ, и҆ напо́лни болѣ́знїю чре́во,

Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good?

ѡ҆блича́ѧ глагѡ́лы, и҆́миже не подоба́етъ, и҆ словесы̀, и҆́хже ни ка́ѧ по́льза;

But you are doing away with the fear of Goda and hindering meditation before God.

Не и҆ ты́ ли ѿри́нѹлъ є҆сѝ стра́хъ; сконча́лъ же є҆сѝ глаго́лы таковы҄ пред̾ гд҇емъ;

For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

Пови́ненъ є҆сѝ глаго́лѡмъ ѹ҆́стъ твои́хъ, нижѐ разсѹди́лъ є҆сѝ глаго́лы си́льныхъ.

Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you.

Да ѡ҆блича́тъ тѧ̀ ѹ҆ста̀ твоѧ҄, а҆ не а҆́зъ, и҆ ѹ҆стнѣ̀ твоѝ на тѧ̀ возсвидѣ́телствѹютъ.

“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?

Что́ бо; є҆да̀ пе́рвый ѿ человѣ҄къ рожде́нъ є҆сѝ; и҆лѝ пре́жде холмѡ́въ сгѹсти́лсѧ є҆сѝ;

Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?

и҆лѝ строе́нїе гд҇не слы́шалъ є҆сѝ; и҆лѝ въ совѣ́тника тѧ̀ ѹ҆потребѝ бг҃ъ; и҆ на тѧ̀ (є҆ди́наго) ли прїи́де премѹ́дрость;

What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?

что́ бо вѣ́си, є҆гѡ́же не вѣ́мы; и҆лѝ что̀ разѹмѣ́еши ты̀, є҆гѡ́же и҆ мы̀ (не разѹмѣ́емъ);

Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father.

И҆ ста́ръ и҆ дре́венъ є҆́сть въ на́съ, ста́ршїй ѻ҆тца̀ твоегѡ̀ де́ньми.

Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?

Ма́лѡ, ѡ҆ ни́хже согрѣши́лъ є҆сѝ, ѹ҆ѧ́звленъ є҆сѝ, вельмѝ вы́ше мѣ́ры возглаго́лалъ є҆сѝ.

Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash,

Что̀ де́рзостно бы́сть се́рдце твоѐ; и҆лѝ что̀ вознесо́стѣсѧ ѻ҆́чи твоѝ;

that you turn your spirit against God and bring such words out of your mouth?

ѩ҆́кѡ ѩ҆́рость и҆зры́гнѹлъ є҆сѝ пред̾ гд҇емъ, и҆зне́слъ же є҆сѝ и҆зо ѹ҆́стъ такѡва̀ словеса̀;

What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous?

Кто́ бо сы́й человѣ́къ ѩ҆́кѡ бѹ́детъ непоро́ченъ; и҆лѝ а҆́ки бѹ́дѹщїй пра́ведникъ рожде́нъ ѿ жены̀;

Behold, Godb puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight;

А҆́ще во ст҃ы́хъ не вѣ́ритъ, нб҃о же нечи́сто пред̾ ни́мъ,

how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water!

кольмѝ па́че ме́рзкїй и҆ нечи́стый мѹ́жъ, пїѧ́й непра҄вды, ѩ҆́коже питїѐ.

“I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare

Возвѣщѹ́ же тѝ, послѹ́шай менѐ: ѩ҆̀же нн҃ѣ ви́дѣхъ, возвѣщѹ̀ тѝ,

(what wise men have told, without hiding it from their fathers,

ѩ҆̀же премѹ́дрїи рекѹ́тъ, и҆ не ѹ҆таи́ша ѻ҆тцы̀ и҆́хъ,

to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them).

и҆̀мже є҆ди҄нымъ дана̀ бы́сть землѧ̀, и҆ не на́йде и҆ноплеме́нникъ на нѧ̀.

The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless.

Всѐ житїѐ нечести́вагѡ въ попече́нїи, лѣ҄та же и҆зочтє́на дана҄ си́льномѹ,

Dreadful sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him.

стра́хъ же є҆гѡ̀ во ѹ҆шесѣ́хъ є҆гѡ̀: є҆гда̀ мни́тъ ѹ҆жѐ въ ми́рѣ бы́ти, тогда̀ прїи́детъ на́нь низвраще́нїе:

He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword.

да не вѣ́рѹетъ ѿврати́тисѧ ѿ тмы̀, ѡ҆сѹжде́нъ бо ѹ҆жѐ въ рѹ́ки желѣ́за,

He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand;

ѹ҆чине́нъ же є҆́сть въ бра́шно неѧ́сытємъ: вѣ́сть же въ себѣ̀, ѩ҆́кѡ жде́тъ паде́нїѧ, де́нь же те́менъ преврати́тъ є҆го̀,

distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle.

бѣда́ же и҆ ско́рбь ѡ҆б̾и́метъ є҆го̀, ѩ҆́коже военача́лникъ напредѝ стоѧ́й па́даетъ,

Because he has stretched out his hand against God and defies the Almighty,

ѩ҆́кѡ вознесѐ рѹ́цѣ на гд҇а, пред̾ гд҇емъ же вседержи́телемъ ѡ҆жесточѝ вы́ю,

running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield;

тече́ же проти́вѹ є҆мѹ̀ ѹ҆кори́зною въ то́лщи хребта̀ щита̀ своегѡ̀:

because he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat upon his waist

ѩ҆́кѡ покры̀ лицѐ своѐ тѹ́комъ свои́мъ и҆ сотворѝ ѡ҆ме́тъ на сте́гнахъ: (хвала́ же є҆гѡ̀ ѹ҆кори́зна).

and has lived in desolate cities, in houses that none should inhabit, which were ready to become heaps of ruins;

Да всели́тсѧ же во градѣ́хъ пѹсты́хъ, вни́детъ же въ до́мы ненаселє́нныѧ: а҆ ѩ҆̀же ѻ҆нѝ ѹ҆гото́ваша, и҆ні́и ѿнесѹ́тъ.

he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the earth;c

Нижѐ ѡ҆богати́тсѧ, нижѐ ѡ҆ста́нетъ и҆мѣ́нїе є҆гѡ̀, не и҆́мать положи́ти на зе́млю сѣ́ни,

he will not depart from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and by the breath of his mouth he will depart.

нижѐ и҆збѣжи́тъ тмы̀: прозѧбе́нїе є҆гѡ̀ да ѹ҆сѹши́тъ вѣ́тръ, и҆ да ѿпаде́тъ цвѣ́тъ є҆гѡ̀:

Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment.

да не вѣ́ритъ, ѩ҆́кѡ стерпи́тъ, тщє́тнаѧ бо сбѹ́дѹтсѧ є҆мѹ̀.

It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green.

Посѣче́нїе є҆гѡ̀ пре́жде часа̀ растлѣ́етъ, и҆ лѣ́торасль є҆гѡ̀ не ѡ҆бли́ственѣетъ:

He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine, and cast off his blossom like the olive tree.

да ѡ҆б̾има́нъ бѹ́детъ ѩ҆́коже недозрѣ́лаѧ ѩ҆́года пре́жде часа̀, да ѿпаде́тъ же ѩ҆́кѡ цвѣ́тъ ма́сличїѧ.

For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery.

Послѹ́шество бо нечести́вагѡ сме́рть, ѻ҆́гнь же пожже́тъ до́мы мздои́мцєвъ:

They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.”

во чре́вѣ же прїи́метъ бѡлѣ́зни, сбѹ́детсѧ же є҆мѹ̀ тщета̀,чре́во же є҆гѡ̀ понесе́тъ ле́сть.
