Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

В селении Вифания, где жили Мария и её сестра Марфа, был болен один человек, по имени Лазарь.

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Это была та самая Мария, которая впоследствии умастила ноги Господа миром и вытерла их волосами своими; Лазарь же был брат её.

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

И вот сестры послали Господу известие: тот, кого Ты любишь, болен.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Узнав об этом, Иисус сказал: эта болезнь не к смерти, но к славе Божьей; благодаря ей Сын Божий будет прославлен.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Поэтому, хотя Иисус и любил Лазаря, Марфу и сестру её,

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Он ещё два дня после того как узнал, что Лазарь болен, оставался там, где и был.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

Затем Он говорит ученикам Своим: мы снова идем в Иудею.

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

Ученики говорят Ему: Равви, ведь ещё совсем недавно иудеи хотели побить Тебя камнями; зачем же Ты снова пойдешь туда?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Иисус ответил: разве день состоит не из двенадцати часов? Кто ходит днем, тот не спотыкается, потому что видит Свет мира сего,

But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

а кто ходит ночью, тот спотыкается, потому что ночью нет Света.1

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

После таких слов Он говорит им: Лазарь, друг наш, уснул. Но Я пойду и разбужу его.

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

Ученики сказали Ему: если уснул, значит, выздоровеет.

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Иисус же говорил о смерти его, а они решили, что Он говорит об обычном сне.

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Тогда Иисус прямо сказал им: Лазарь умер,

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

и Я рад, что Меня там не было, потому что теперь вы (окончательно) уверуете; однако, пойдем к нему.

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Фома же, называемый Близнец, сказал остальным ученикам: пойдем и мы погибнем вместе с Ним.

Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Придя (в Иерусалим), Иисус узнал, что уже четыре дня как Лазарь лежит в гробнице.

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Вифания же расположена неподалеку от Иерусалима, стадиях в пятнадцати,

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

и многие иудеи пришли к Марфе и Марии, чтобы разделить с ними скорбь о брате их.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Марфа же, когда услышала, что Иисус идет к ним, вышла навстречу Ему, а Мария сидела дома.

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

И сказала Марфа Иисусу: Господи, если бы Ты был здесь, не умер бы брат мой,

But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

потому что я знаю: о чём бы ни просил Ты у Бога, Бог даст Тебе.

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Иисус говорит ей: воскреснет брат твой.

Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Марфа же говорит Ему: знаю, что воскреснет — когда все воскреснут, в последний день.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Тогда Иисус сказал ей: Я — воскресение и жизнь. Кто верует в Меня, тот если и умрет, то оживёт.

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Каждый, кто живёт верою в Меня, будет жить вечно. Веришь ли этому?

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Она говорит Ему: да, Господи! Я верую, что Ты — Христос, Сын Божий, пришедший в мир.

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

После этих слов она возвратилась домой и, незаметно для других позвав Марию, сестру свою, сказала ей: Учитель здесь; Он зовет тебя.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

Едва услышав это, та поспешила к Нему.

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

Иисус же не вошел в селение, но так и остался там, где Марфа встретила Его.

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

А иудеи, которые были в доме вместе с Марией и утешали её, увидев, как поспешно она встала и вышла, решили, что она пошла плакать к гробнице, и последовали за ней.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Тем временем Мария, придя туда, где был Иисус, и увидев Его, пала у ног Его и воскликнула: Господи! Если бы Ты был здесь, не умер бы брат мой.

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

При виде её, плачущей, и плачущих иудеев, которые следовали за ней, Иисуса охватили скорбь и печаль;

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

и спросил Он: где вы похоронили его? (Сестры) говорят Ему: вот, Господи, посмотри.2

Jesus wept.

Иисус заплакал.

Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

Иудеи же говорили: смотри, как Он любил его!

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

А некоторые из них сказали: ведь он вернул зрение слепому; разве не мог Он сделать так, чтобы и Лазарь не умер?

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Ещё большая скорбь охватила Иисуса, когда Он подошел к гробнице. Это была пещера, вход в которую прикрывал камень.

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Иисус говорит: отвалите камень. Сестра же умершего Марфа, говорит Ему: Господи, от него уже пахнет; ведь четыре дня прошло.

Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Иисус говорит ей: разве не сказал Я тебе, что если будешь веровать, увидишь величие Божье?

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

И вот отвалили камень (от гробницы), в которой лежал умерший. Иисус же, воззрев на небо, воскликнул: Отче! Благодарю Тебя за то, что Ты услышал Меня!

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Я знал, что Ты всегда слышишь Меня, но говорю это ради собравшихся людей, дабы они поверили, что Ты послал Меня.

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

После этих слов Он воскликнул во весь голос: Лазарь, выйди оттуда!

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

И тотчас появился умерший, руки и ноги которого были обвиты погребальными пеленами, а лицо покрывал платок. Иисус говорит иудеям: развяжите его, чтобы он мог идти.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Увидев (чудо), которое совершил Иисус, многие из тех, что пришли вместе с Марией, уверовали в Него.

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

А некоторые из них пошли к фарисеям и рассказали им о случившемся.

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

Тогда первосвященники и фарисеи собрали совет и стали решать: что же нам делать? Этот Человек совершает всё больше и больше чудес.

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Если позволить Ему и дальше поступать так, многие уверуют в Него, и тогда придут римляне, которые погубят и страну нашу, и народ наш.

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

А один из них, Каиафа, который на то время был первосвященником, сказал им: ничего вы не понимаете.

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

Подумайте, что лучше: чтобы один человек умер за народ, или чтобы весь народ погиб?

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Сказал же он это не сам от себя, но будучи на то время первосвященником, предрек, что Иисусу предстоит умереть за Свой народ,

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

и не только за Свой народ, но и ради того, чтобы других детей Божьих собрать воедино.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

И приняли они в тот день решение убить Его,

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

поэтому Иисус уже не ходил открыто среди иудеев, но удалился оттуда в город Ефраим, расположенный неподалеку от пустыни, и остался там с учениками Своими.

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Между тем приближалась Пасха иудейская, и многие люди со всей страны пришли перед Пасхой в Иерусалим, чтобы очиститься от грехов своих.

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Они разыскали Иисуса и, останавливаясь в храме, спрашивали друг друга: как вы думаете, придет Он на праздник или нет?

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

А первосвященники и фарисеи, чтобы схватить Его, огласили повеление: тот, кому станет известно, где Он, должен сообщить об этом.
