Так! у серебра есть источная жила, и у золота место, где его плавят.

“People know where to mine silver and how to refine gold.

Железо получается из земли; из камня выплавляется медь.

They know where to dig iron from the earth and how to smelt copper from rock.

Человек полагает предел тьме и тщательно разыскивает камень во мраке и тени смертной.

They know how to shine light in the darkness and explore the farthest regions of the earth as they search in the dark for ore.

Вырывают рудокопный колодезь в местах, забытых ногою, спускаются вглубь, висят и зыблются вдали от людей.

They sink a mine shaft into the earth far from where anyone lives. They descend on ropes, swinging back and forth.

Земля, на которой вырастает хлеб, внутри изрыта как бы огнём.

Food is grown on the earth above, but down below, the earth is melted as by fire.

Камни её — место сапфира, и в ней песчинки золота.

Here the rocks contain precious lapis lazuli, and the dust contains gold.

Стези туда не знает хищная птица, и не видал её глаз коршуна;

These are treasures no bird of prey can see, no falcon’s eye observe.

не попирали её скимны, и не ходил по ней шакал.

No wild animal has walked upon these treasures; no lion has ever set his paw there.

На гранит налагает он руку свою, с корнем опрокидывает горы;

People know how to tear apart flinty rocks and overturn the roots of mountains.

в скалах просекает каналы, и всё драгоценное видит глаз его;

They cut tunnels in the rocks and uncover precious stones.

останавливает течение потоков и сокровенное выносит на свет.

They dam up the trickling streams and bring to light the hidden treasures.

Но где премудрость обретается? и где место разума?

“But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding?

Не знает человек цены её, и она не обретается на земле живых.

No one knows where to find it,a for it is not found among the living.

Бездна говорит: «не во мне она»; и море говорит: «не у меня».

‘It is not here,’ says the ocean. ‘Nor is it here,’ says the sea.

Не даётся она за золото и не приобретается она за вес серебра;

It cannot be bought with gold. It cannot be purchased with silver.

не оценивается она золотом Офирским, ни драгоценным ониксом, ни сапфиром;

It’s worth more than all the gold of Ophir, greater than precious onyx or lapis lazuli.

не равняется с нею золото и кристалл, и не выменяешь её на сосуды из чистого золота.

Wisdom is more valuable than gold and crystal. It cannot be purchased with jewels mounted in fine gold.

А о кораллах и жемчуге и упоминать нечего, и приобретение премудрости выше рубинов.

Coral and jasper are worthless in trying to get it. The price of wisdom is far above rubies.

Не равняется с нею топаз Ефиопский; чистым золотом не оценивается она.

Precious peridot from Ethiopiab cannot be exchanged for it. It’s worth more than the purest gold.

Откуда же исходит премудрость? и где место разума?

“But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding?

Сокрыта она от очей всего живущего и от птиц небесных утаена.

It is hidden from the eyes of all humanity. Even the sharp-eyed birds in the sky cannot discover it.

Аваддон и смерть говорят: «ушами нашими слышали мы слух о ней».

Destructionc and Death say, ‘We’ve heard only rumors of where wisdom can be found.’

Бог знает путь её, и Он ведает место её.

“God alone understands the way to wisdom; he knows where it can be found,

Ибо Он прозирает до концов земли и видит под всем небом.

for he looks throughout the whole earth and sees everything under the heavens.

Когда Он ветру полагал вес и располагал воду по мере,

He decided how hard the winds should blow and how much rain should fall.

когда назначал устав дождю и путь для молнии громоносной,

He made the laws for the rain and laid out a path for the lightning.

тогда Он видел её и явил её, приготовил её и ещё испытал её

Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it. He set it in place and examined it thoroughly.

и сказал человеку: «вот, страх Господень есть истинная премудрость, и удаление от зла — разум».

And this is what he says to all humanity: ‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.’”
