Тем временем слух об Иисусе дошел до правителя,1 до Ирода,

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus

и тот сказал своим слугам: «Это Иоанн Креститель. Бог воскресил его из мертвых — вот откуда у Него сила творить чудеса».2

and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

В свое время этот самый Ирод схватил Иоанна, связал [его] и бросил в тюрьму. Случилось это всё из-за Иродиады, бывшей жены Филиппа, брата Ирода;

For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

Иоанн говорил царю: «Ты не вправе жить с ней».

Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

Ирод хотел убить его, но боялся народа, в глазах которого Иоанн был пророком.

And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

В день рождения Ирода дочь Иродиады плясала перед гостями и доставила Ироду такое удовольствие,

But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.

что он клятвенно пообещал дать ей всё, чего бы она ни попросила.

Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

Подговоренная матерью, дочь сказала: «Голову Иоанна Крестителя подай мне сюда на блюде!»

So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”

Царь огорчился, но из-за клятвы, данной к тому же перед гостями, уступил ей:

And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.

он послал в тюрьму обезглавить Иоанна.

So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

Голову принесли на блюде и отдали девице, а та отнесла ее матери своей.

And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

Вскоре явились ученики Иоанна, взяли его тело и похоронили. Потом они пошли с вестью об этом к Иисусу.

Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Услышав о случившемся, Иисус удалился на лодке в пустынное место, где Он мог бы побыть один, но многие люди узнали о том и из разных городов пешком последовали за Ним.

When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.

Выйдя на берег, Иисус увидел толпы людей и, сжалившись над ними, исцелил тех, кто был болен.

And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

Когда же наступил вечер, подошли к Нему ученики и сказали: «Место это пустынное, и время уже позднее: отпусти народ. Пусть сходят люди в селения и купят себе пищи».

When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”

«Не нужно им уходить, — возразил [Иисус]. — Вы дайте им есть!»

But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

«У нас, — сказали они, — здесь нет ничего, кроме пяти хлебов и двух рыб».

And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

«Принесите Мне их сюда», — ответил Он.

He said, “Bring them here to Me.”

Велев людям расположиться на траве, Иисус взял пять хлебов и две рыбы, поднял глаза к небу и произнес благодарственную молитву, затем стал разламывать хлеб и давать его ученикам, а они — народу.

Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.

Все ели и насытились; и тем, что осталось, наполнили двенадцать корзин.

So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.

А всех, кто ел, было около пяти тысяч — и это только мужчин, не считая женщин и детей.

Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Сразу после этого Иисус настоял, чтобы ученики сели в лодку и, не дожидаясь, пока Он отпустит народ, переправились на другой берег.

Immediately Jesus [a]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.

Отпустив же людей, Он взошел на гору, чтобы в уединении помолиться, и долго оставался там один и после наступления вечера.

And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.

А лодка в это время далеко от суши3 боролась с волнами, которые гнал встречный ветер.

But the boat was now [b]in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

Уже на исходе ночи4 Иисус догнал лодку, идя прямо по морю.

Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

Увидев, как Он идет по морю, ученики Его сильно испугались. «Это призрак!» — решили они и в ужасе закричали.

And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.

Тогда [Иисус] заговорил с ними: «Успокойтесь, это Я! Не бойтесь!»

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, [c]“Be of good cheer! [d]It is I; do not be afraid.”

«Господи! — сказал Ему Петр. — Если Ты это, вели мне пойти к Тебе по воде!»

And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

«Иди!» — ответил Он. Тогда Петр вышел из лодки и прямо по воде направился к Иисусу.5

So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

Но почувствовав, [ как силен] ветер, он испугался и начал тонуть. «Господи, — закричал он, — спаси меня!»

But when he saw [e]that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

Иисус протянул ему тотчас руку, поддержал его и сказал: «Зачем же ты усомнился, маловерный?»

And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Когда вошли они в лодку, ветер утих.

And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

И те, которые были в лодке, пали ниц пред Иисусом, восклицая: «Воистину Ты Сын Божий!»

Then those who were in the boat [f]came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

Переправившись, вышли на берег они в Геннисарете.

When they had crossed over, they came [g]to the land of Gennesaret.

Местные жители, узнав Иисуса, оповестили о том всю округу. И принесли к Нему всех больных,

And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick,

и просили позволить им хотя бы к краю одежды Его прикоснуться. И все, кто прикасался, исцелялись.6

and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.
