Viele haben es schon unternommen, Bericht zu geben von den Geschichten, die unter uns geschehen sind,

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us,

wie uns das überliefert haben, die es von Anfang an selbst gesehen haben und Diener des Worts gewesen sind.

just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,

So habe auch ich's für gut gehalten, nachdem ich alles von Anfang an sorgfältig erkundet habe, es für dich, hochgeehrter Theophilus, in guter Ordnung aufzuschreiben,

it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;

damit du den sicheren Grund der Lehre erfahrest, in der du unterrichtet bist.

so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

Zu der Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, lebte ein Priester von der Ordnung Abija, mit Namen Zacharias, und seine Frau war aus dem Geschlecht Aaron und hieß Elisabeth.

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Sie waren aber alle beide fromm vor Gott und lebten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des Herrn untadelig.

They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.

Und sie hatten kein Kind; denn Elisabeth war unfruchtbar, und beide waren hochbetagt.

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.

Und es begab sich, als Zacharias den Priesterdienst vor Gott versah, da seine Ordnung an der Reihe war,

Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division,

daß ihn nach dem Brauch der Priesterschaft das Los traf, das Räucheropfer darzubringen; und er ging in den Tempel des Herrn.

according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

Und die ganze Menge des Volkes stand draußen und betete zur Stunde des Räucheropfers.

And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering.

Da erschien ihm der Engel des Herrn und stand an der rechten Seite des Räucheraltars.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.

Und als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er, und es kam Furcht über ihn.

Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.

Aber der Engel sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias, denn dein Gebet ist erhört, und deine Frau Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst ihm den Namen Johannes geben.

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John.

Und du wirst Freude und Wonne haben, und viele werden sich über seine Geburt freuen.

“You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn; Wein und starkes Getränk wird er nicht trinken und wird schon von Mutterleib an erfüllt werden mit dem heiligen Geist.

“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb.

Und er wird vom Volk Israel viele zu dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, bekehren.

“And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.

Und er wird vor ihm hergehen im Geist und in der Kraft Elias, zu bekehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern und die Ungehorsamen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem Herrn ein Volk, das wohl vorbereitet ist.

“It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Woran soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt, und meine Frau ist betagt.

Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”

Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden und dir dies zu verkündigen.

The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

Und siehe, du wirst stumm werden und nicht reden können bis zu dem Tag, an dem dies geschehen wird, weil du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, die erfüllt werden sollen zu ihrer Zeit.

“And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias und wunderte sich, daß er so lange im Tempel blieb.

The people were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering at his delay in the temple.

Als er aber herauskam, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden; und sie merkten, daß er eine Erscheinung gehabt hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen und blieb stumm.

But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he kept making signs to them, and remained mute.

Und es begab sich, als die Zeit seines Dienstes um war, da ging er heim in sein Haus.

When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home.

Nach diesen Tagen wurde seine Frau Elisabeth schwanger und hielt sich fünf Monate verborgen und sprach:

After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying,

So hat der Herr an mir getan in den Tagen, als er mich angesehen hat, um meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir zu nehmen.

“This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men.”

Und im sechsten Monat wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott gesandt in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth,

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,

zu einer Jungfrau, die vertraut war einem Mann mit Namen Josef vom Hause David; und die Jungfrau hieß Maria.

to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Sei gegrüßt, du Begnadete! Der Herr ist mit dir!

And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

Sie aber erschrak über die Rede und dachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das?

But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.

Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria, du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden.

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.

Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst ihm den Namen Jesus geben.

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

Der wird groß sein und Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und Gott der Herr wird ihm den Thron seines Vaters David geben,

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;

und er wird König sein über das Haus Jakob in Ewigkeit, und sein Reich wird kein Ende haben.

and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen, da ich doch von keinem Mann weiß?

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das geboren wird, Gottes Sohn genannt werden.

The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Verwandte, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohn, in ihrem Alter, und ist jetzt im sechsten Monat, von der man sagt, daß sie unfruchtbar sei.

“And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month.

Denn bei Gott ist kein Ding unmöglich.

“For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ich bin des Herrn Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr.

And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Maria aber machte sich auf in diesen Tagen und ging eilends in das Gebirge zu einer Stadt in Juda

Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah,

und kam in das Haus des Zacharias und begrüßte Elisabeth.

and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth wurde vom heiligen Geist erfüllt

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

und rief laut und sprach: Gepriesen bist du unter den Frauen, und gepriesen ist die Frucht deines Leibes!

And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

Und wie geschieht mir das, daß die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt?

“And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?

Denn siehe, als ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörte, hüpfte das Kind vor Freude in meinem Leibe.

“For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.

Und selig bist du, die du geglaubt hast! Denn es wird vollendet werden, was dir gesagt ist von dem Herrn.

“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”

Und Maria sprach:

And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord,

und mein Geist freut sich Gottes, meines Heilandes;

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

denn er hat die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd angesehen. Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskinder.

“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.

Denn er hat große Dinge an mir getan, der da mächtig ist und dessen Name heilig ist.

“For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.

Und seine Barmherzigkeit währt von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht bei denen, die ihn fürchten.

“AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.

Er übt Gewalt mit seinem Arm und zerstreut, die hoffärtig sind in ihres Herzens Sinn.

“He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.

Er stößt die Gewaltigen vom Thron und erhebt die Niedrigen.

“He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble.

Die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gütern und läßt die Reichen leer ausgehen.

“HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS; And sent away the rich empty-handed.

Er gedenkt der Barmherzigkeit und hilft seinem Diener Israel auf,

“He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy,

wie er geredet hat zu unsern Vätern, Abraham und seinen Kindern in Ewigkeit.

As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Und Maria blieb bei ihr etwa drei Monate; danach kehrte sie wieder heim.

And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.

Und für Elisabeth kam die Zeit, daß sie gebären sollte; und sie gebar einen Sohn.

Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.

Und ihre Nachbarn und Verwandten hörten, daß der Herr große Barmherzigkeit an ihr getan hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr.

Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.

Und es begab sich am achten Tag, da kamen sie, das Kindlein zu beschneiden, und wollten es nach seinem Vater Zacharias nennen.

And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.

Aber seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Nein, sondern er soll Johannes heißen.

But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but he shall be called John.”

Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch niemand in deiner Verwandtschaft, der so heißt.

And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.”

Und sie winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn nennen lassen wollte.

And they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called.

Und er forderte eine kleine Tafel und schrieb: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie wunderten sich alle.

And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, “His name is John.” And they were all astonished.

Und sogleich wurde sein Mund aufgetan und seine Zunge gelöst, und er redete und lobte Gott.

And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.

Und es kam Furcht über alle Nachbarn; und diese ganze Geschichte wurde bekannt auf dem ganzen Gebirge Judäas.

Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all the hill country of Judea.

Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen's zu Herzen und sprachen: Was meinst du, will aus diesem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des Herrn war mit ihm.

All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him.

Und sein Vater Zacharias wurde vom heiligen Geist erfüllt, weissagte und sprach:

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

Gelobt sei der Herr, der Gott Israels! Denn er hat besucht und erlöst sein Volk

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,

und hat uns aufgerichtet eine Macht des Heils im Hause seines Dieners David

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant —

- wie er vorzeiten geredet hat durch den Mund seiner heiligen Propheten -,

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old —

daß er uns errettete von unsern Feinden und aus der Hand aller, die uns hassen,

Salvation FROM OUR ENEMIES, And FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US;

und Barmherzigkeit erzeigte unsern Vätern und gedächte an seinen heiligen Bund

To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant,

und an den Eid, den er geschworen hat unserm Vater Abraham, uns zu geben,

The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,

daß wir, erlöst aus der Hand unsrer Feinde,

To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

ihm dienten ohne Furcht unser Leben lang in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit vor seinen Augen.

In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

Und du, Kindlein, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten heißen. Denn du wirst dem Herrn vorangehen, daß du seinen Weg bereitest,

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS;

und Erkenntnis des Heils gebest seinem Volk in der Vergebung ihrer Sünden,

To give to His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,

durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unseres Gottes, durch die uns besuchen wird das aufgehende Licht aus der Höhe,

Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,

damit es erscheine denen, die sitzen in Finsternis und Schatten des Todes, und richte unsere Füße auf den Weg des Friedens.

TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Und das Kindlein wuchs und wurde stark im Geist. Und er war in der Wüste bis zu dem Tag, an dem er vor das Volk Israel treten sollte.

And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
