Як ўжо многія прыклалі руку скласці аповесць пра падзеі, што адбыліся ў нас,

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us,

як перадалі нам тыя, што ад пачатку былі відавочцамі і служкамі Слова,

just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,

вырашыў і я, дакладна даследаваўшы ўсё ад пачатку, напісаць па парадку пра іх табе, найшаноўнейшы Тэофіле,

it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;

каб ты пераканаўся ў непарушнасці тых слоў, у якіх ты быў настаўлены.

so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

Быў у дні Ірада, іудзейскага цара, адзін святар імем Захарыя з Авіявай чарады, а жонка ў яго была з дачок Ааронавых. І імя ёй — Елісавета.

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Былі ж яны абое праведныя перад Богам, ходзячы беззаганна паводле ўсіх запаведзяў і правілаў Гасподніх.

They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.

І не мелі дзіцяці, бо Елісавета была бясплодная, і абое яны былі на схіле сваіх гадоў.

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.

І сталася: калі ў парадку свае чарады ён служыў перад Богам,

Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division,

паводле звычаю святарства выпаў яму жэраб кадзіць, увайшоўшы ў храм Гасподні,

according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

а ўсё мноства народу малілася з надворку ў гадзіну каджэння.

And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering.

І паказаўся яму Анёл Гасподні, стоячы праваруч кадзільнага ахвярніка.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.

І Захарыя, убачыўшы, уразіўся і страх напаў на яго.

Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.

Але Анёл сказаў яму: Не бойся, Захарыя, бо твая просьба пачута. І твая жонка Елісавета народзіць табе сына, і назавеш яго імем Іаан.

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John.

І будзе табе радасць і весялосць, і многія нараджэнню яго ўсцешацца.

“You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

Бо ён будзе вялікі перад Госпадам, і не будзе піць ні віна, ні сікера і Святым Духам напоўніцца яшчэ ва ўлонні сваёй маці

“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb.

і многіх з Ізраілевых сыноў далучыць да Госпада, іхняга Бога.

“And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.

І ён будзе ісці перад Ім у духу і сіле Іліі, каб сэрцы бацькоў павярнуць да дзяцей, і непакорных да розуму праведных, каб падрыхтаваць Госпаду народ дасканалы.

“It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

І Захарыя сказаў Анёлу: Па чым я пазнаю гэта? Бо я стары і мая жонка на схіле сваіх дзён.

Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”

І ў адказ яму Анёл сказаў: Я Гаўрыіл, што перад Богам стаю, і пасланы гаварыць з табою і дабравесціць табе гэта;

The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

і вось, ты будзеш маўчаць і не змажаш гаварыць да дня, калі збудзецца гэта, за тое, што ты не паверыў маім словам, якія спраўдзяцца ў свой час.

“And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

І народ чакаў Захарыю і дзівіўся, што ён марудзіў у храме.

The people were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering at his delay in the temple.

А, выйшаўшы, той не мог гаварыць з імі, і яны зрамзумелі, што ён бачыў з’явенне ў храме; а ён падаваў ім знакі і заставаўся нямы.

But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he kept making signs to them, and remained mute.

І сталася: калі скончыліся дні яго службы, ён пайшоў у свой дом.

When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home.

Пасля ж гэтых дзён зачала яго жонка Елісавета і таілася пяць месяцаў, кажучы:

After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying,

Так мне зрабіў Госпад ў дні, калі ласкава паглядзеў на мяне, каб зняць з мяне ганьбу сярод людзей.

“This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men.”

А ў шосты месяц быў пасланы ад Бога Анёл Гаўрыіл у Галілейскі горад пад назваю Назарэт,

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,

да Дзевы, заручанай з чалавекам імем Іосіф, з дому Давідавага; а імя Дзевы — Марыям.

to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

І [Анёл], увайшоўшы да Яе, сказаў: Радуйся, ласкаю адораная! Госпад з Табою! [Дабраславёная Ты між жанчын!]

And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

Яна ж, [убачыўшы яго], збянтэжылася ад гэтага слова і разважала, што б гэта было за прывітанне.

But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.

І сказаў Ёй Анёл: Не бойся, Марыям, бо знайшла Ты ласку ў Бога.

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.

І вось, Ты зачнеш ва ўлонні і народзіш Сына і назавеш Яго імем Ісус.

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

Ён будзе вялікі, і Сынам Усявышняга будзе названы, і дасць Яму Госпад Бог трон Давіда, Яго бацькі,

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;

і будзе цараваць Ён над домам Іякава навекі, і Яго Царству не будзе канца.

and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

А Марыям сказала Анёлу: Як будзе гэта, калі мужа не знаю?

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

І ў адказ Анёл сказаў Ёй: Святы Дух зыдзе на Цябе, і сіла Усявышняга ахіне цябе; таму і Святое, што народзіцца, будзе названа Сынам Божым.

The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

І вось, Елісавета, Твая сваяка, — і яна зачала сына ў сваёй старасці, і гэта шосты месяц у яе, якую называюць бясплоднай,

“And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month.

бо ў Бога няма ніводнага немажлівага слова.

“For nothing will be impossible with God.”

І Марыям сказала: Вось, я — раба Гасподняя; няхай будзе Мне паводле твайго слова. — І Анёл адышоў ад Яе.

And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

І, устаўшы, Марыям у тыя дні пайшла з паспешлівасцю ў горную мясцовасць, у горад Іуды,

Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah,

і ўвайшла ў Захарыеў дом і прывітала Елісавету.

and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

І сталася: калі пачула Елісавета Марыіна прывітанне, падскочыла дзіцятка ў яе ўлонні, і Елісавета напоўнілася Святым Духам,

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

і ўсклікнула моцным голасам і сказала: Дабраславёная Ты між жанчын і дабраславёны плод Твайго ўлоння!

And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

І адкуль мне гэта, каб Маці майго Госпада прыйшла да мяне?

“And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?

Бо вось, калі дайшоў голас Твайго прывітання да маіх вушэй, падскочыла ад радасці дзіцятка ў маім ўлонні,

“For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.

і шчаслівая Тая, якая паверыла, што спраўдзіцца сказанае ёй ад Госпада!

“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”

І Марыям сказала: Мая душа ўзвялічвае Госпада,

And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord,

і ўзрадаваўся Мой дух у Богу, Майму Збаўцу,

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

таму што глянуў Ён на паніжэнне Свае Рабы. Бо вось з гэтага часу будуць дабраслаўляць мяне ў се пакаленні;

“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.

бо Магутны стварыў Мне вялікае. І святое Яго імя;

“For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.

і Яго міласэрнасць — на пакаленні і пакаленні тых, што Яго баяцца.

“AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.

Ён стварыў сілу Сваёю рукою; рассеяў ганарлівых думкамі сэрца іх;

“He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.

скінуў уладароў з тронаў і ўзвысіў пакорлівых,

“He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble.

галодных насыціў дабром, а багатых адаслаў ні з чым.

“HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS; And sent away the rich empty-handed.

Ён прыйшоў на дапамогу Ізраілю, Свайму слузе, памятаючы пра міласэрнасць, —

“He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy,

як сказаў Ён нашым бацькам, — Аўрааму і яго патомкам.

As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Заставалася ж Марыям з ёю месяцаў са тры і вярнулася ў Свой дом.

And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.

А Елісавеце надышоў час радзіць, і яна нарадзіла сына.

Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.

І яе суседзі і сваякі пачулі, што ўзвялічыў Госпад Сваю міласэрнасць да яе, і цешыліся з ёю.

Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.

І сталася: у восьмы дзень прыйшлі абразаць дзіцятка, і хацелі яго назваць імем яго бацькі, Захарыем.

And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.

Але яго маці сказала ў адказ: Не, а будзе названы ён Іаанам.

But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but he shall be called John.”

І сказалі ёй: Нікога няма ў тваёй радні, хто называўся б гэтым імем.

And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.”

І пыталіся знакамі ў яго бацькі, як ён хацеў бы, каб назвалі яго.

And they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called.

І ён, папрасіўшы дошчачку, напісаў, паведамляючы: «Яго імя — Іаана». І ўсе здзівіліся..

And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, “His name is John.” And they were all astonished.

І зараз жа раскрыліся яго вусны і ажыў язык яго, і ён загаварыў, дабраславячы Бога.

And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.

І ахапіў страх усіх, што жылі навокал іх, і па ўсёй горнай Іудзеі расказвалі пра ўсё гэта.

Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all the hill country of Judea.

І ўсе, што чулі, бралі сабе да сэрца, кажучы: Кім жа будзе гэтае дзіцятка? — Бо і рука Гасподняя была з ім.

All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him.

І яго бацька Захарыя напоўніўся Святым Духам і прарочыў, кажучы:

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

Дабраславёны Госпад, Бог Ізраілеў, што наведаў Свой народ і даў яму вызваленне,

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,

і падняў нам рог выратавання ў доме Давіда, Свайго слугі, —

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant —

як сказаў ад веку вуснамі Сваіх святых прарокаў, —

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old —

што ўратуе нас ад нашых ворагаў і ад рукі ўсіх ненавіснікаў нашых,

Salvation FROM OUR ENEMIES, And FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US;

створыць міласэрнасць нашым бацькам і ўспомніць Свой святы запавет,

To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant,

клятву, якой пакляўся нашаму бацьку Аўрааму, што дасць нам,

The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,

бясстрашна, выбавіўшы з рукі ворагаў, служыць Яму

To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

ў святасці і праведнасці перад Ім ва ўсе нашы дні1.

In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

І ты, дзіцятка, будзеш звацца прарокам Ўсявышняга, бо ты пойдзеш перад [абліччам] Госпада, каб падрыхтаваць Яму дарогі,

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS;

каб даць Яго народу пазнаць выратаванее ў адпушчэнні іх грахоў,

To give to His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,

праз сардэчную міласэрнасць нашага Бога, у якой наведае2 нас Усход з вышыні,

Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,

каб даць святло тым, што сядзяць у цемры і смяротным цені, і скіраваць нашы ногі на дарогу міру.

TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Хлопчык жа рос і ўмацоўвася духам, і быў ён у пустэльнях да дня свайго з’яўлення перад Ізраілем.

And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
