Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

Многие уже пытались описать события, происшедшие среди нас,

Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

рассказанные нам очевидцами, с самого начала видевшими происходившее и служившими Богу, провозглашая слово Его.

It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

Тщательно изучив всё от начала и до конца, я решил записать для тебя, достопочтенный Феофил, последовательное изложение всех событий,

That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

чтобы ты был уверен в достоверности того, чему учили тебя.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Во времена, когда Ирод был правителем Иудеи, жил священник по имени Захария, который принадлежал к роду священника Авии. Его жена была из рода Аарона. Её звали Елизаветой.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Захария и Елизавета были праведны перед Богом и беспрекословно повиновались всем заповедям и уставам Господним.

And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

Но у них не было детей, потому что Елизавета была бесплодна и они оба были уже в преклонных годах.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

Однажды, когда пришло время роду Захарии служить в храме, он должен был исполнять обязанности священника перед Богом.

According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

По обычаю священнослужители бросали жребий, чтобы решить, кому было необходимо войти в храм Господний и сжигать там благовонное курение. Жребий пал на Захарию.

And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

В то время как он кадил, множество народа стояло снаружи и молилось.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Тогда явился Захарии Ангел Господний. Он стоял справа от алтаря, на котором курилось благовоние.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

Увидев Ангела, Захария растерялся и очень испугался.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Ангел же сказал ему: «Не бойся, Захария! Твоя молитва услышана: твоя жена Елизавета родит тебе сына, и ты назовёшь его Иоанном.

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

Он принесёт тебе радость и счастье. Многие будут рады его рождению,

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

так как Иоанн будет велик перед Господом. Он не будет пить вина и крепких напитков и ещё с утробы матери своей будет исполнен Святого Духа.

And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

Иоанн вернёт многих израильтян к Господу, их Богу.

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Исполненный такого же могущества и силы духа, как и Илия, он будет предвестником Господа, примиряя отцов с детьми, обращая на путь истинный тех, кто не повинуется велениям Божьим, чтобы подготовить народ к приходу Господа».

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Тогда Захария сказал Ангелу: «Как я узнаю, что это правда? Ведь я стар, и жена моя стара».

And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

В ответ Ангел сказал ему: «Я — Гавриил, предстоящий перед Богом. Я послан говорить с тобой и сообщить тебе эту Добрую Весть.

And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

Но знай, ты будешь нем и не сможешь говорить до того самого дня, пока не свершится это, так как ты не поверил моим словам, которые исполнятся в назначенное время».

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

Люди, стоявшие снаружи, ждали появления Захарии и удивлялись, почему он так долго не выходит из храма.

And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

А выйдя, он не смог говорить с ними, и тогда они поняли, что в храме ему было видение. Захария объяснялся знаками и оставался нем.

And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

Дни его службы подошли к концу, и Захария вернулся домой.

And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

Спустя некоторое время его жена, Елизавета, зачала и скрывалась от всех пять месяцев, говоря:

Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

«Наконец Господь смилостивился надо мной, сняв с меня позор перед людьми».

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

Когда Елизавета была на шестом месяце, Ангел Гавриил был послан Богом в город Назарет, в Галилее,

To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

к девственнице, обручённой с человеком по имени Иосиф. Иосиф был из рода Давида, имя же девственницы было Мария.

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Гавриил пришёл к ней и сказал: «Приветствую тебя! Господь с тобой! Ты благословенна».

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

Но она была смущена этими словами и думала, что бы это приветствие могло значить.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

И Ангел сказал ей: «Не бойся, Мария! Ты обрела милость Божью.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Слушай! Ты зачнёшь и родишь сына, и назовёшь Его Иисусом.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Он будет велик, и будут Его называть Сыном Всевышнего. Господь Бог даст Ему престол Давида, отца Его.

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Он вовеки будет править народом Иакова, и Его царству не будет конца».

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

Мария спросила у Ангела: «Как же будет это, если я не замужем?»

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Ангел ответил ей: «Святой Дух спустится на тебя, и власть Всевышнего осенит тебя. Поэтому дитя, которое родится, будет носить имя Сына Божьего.

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

Твоя родственница Елизавета, хоть и стара, тоже зачала сына. Все считали её бесплодной, но вот уже шесть месяцев, как она беременна.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Для Бога нет ничего невозможного».

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Мария сказала: «Я — слуга Господа. Пусть сбудется со мной то, что ты сказал». И Ангел удалился.

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Тогда Мария собралась и незамедлительно пошла в город, находившийся в горах Иудеи.

And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

Войдя в дом Захарии, она приветствовала Елизавету.

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Когда Елизавета услышала голос Марии, случилось так, что ребёнок в ней забился, и она исполнилась Святого Духа.

And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Елизавета воскликнула: «Нет другой женщины, более благословенной, чем ты! Благословен Ребёнок, Которого ты носишь!

And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

Мать Господа моего пришла ко мне! За что мне выпало такое счастье?

For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Вот, когда я услышала твой голос, ребёнок забился во мне, ликуя.

And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

Благословенна поверившая, что свершится сказанное ей Господом».

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

Мария сказала:

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

«Хвалу воздаёт Господу душа моя, и ликует дух мой о Боге, Спасителе моём,

For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

так как обратил Он взгляд на ничтожную слугу свою. Отныне благословенной будут называть меня люди,

For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

потому что Всемогущий, да святится имя Его, сотворил для меня великое.

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Из поколения в поколение Он милует тех, кто почитает Его.

He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

Он показал силу руки Своей: рассеял горделивых,

He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

низложил властителей и возвысил смиренных,

He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

голодных исполнил благ, богатых отослал ни с чем.

He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

Бог помог народу Израиля, который служит Ему, и не забыл послать ему милость Свою.

As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Он исполнил обещанное нашим предкам: Аврааму и Его потомкам во веки веков».

And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Пробыв с Елизаветой около трёх месяцев, Мария вернулась домой.

Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

Елизавете пришло время родить, и она родила сына.

And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

Её соседи и родственники услышали, что Господь был милостив к ней, и радовались с ней.

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

На восьмой день пришло время делать Ребёнку обрезание, и его хотели назвать Захарией, по имени отца.

And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

Но Елизавета сказала: «Нет, назовём его Иоанном».

And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

Собравшиеся сказали ей: «Никого из твоих родственников так не зовут».

And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

Они стали знаками спрашивать отца, каким именем он хотел бы назвать ребёнка.

And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

Захария попросил дощечку для письма и написал: «Имя ему — Иоанн». И все удивились.

And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

Дар речи тотчас же вернулся к Захарии, и он начал говорить и восхвалять Бога.

And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

В этот момент всех охватил страх, и по всей горной части Иудеи люди говорили обо всём, что произошло.

And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Каждый, кто слышал об этом, размышлял: «Кем же будет этот ребёнок?» — так как действительно сила Господа была с ним.

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Отец Иоанна, Захария, исполнился Святого Духа и стал возвещать людям о том, что совершится:

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

«Благословен будь Господь, Бог Израиля, так как Он пришёл помочь Своему народу и освободил его.

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

Он дал нам могущественного Спасителя из рода Своего слуги Давида,

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

как и обещал Он много лет назад через Своих святых пророков.

That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

Бог обещал спасти нас от врагов и ненавистников.

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

Бог обещал даровать Свою милость нашим отцам и помнить о Своём священном договоре.

The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

Этот договор был клятвой, которую Он дал Аврааму, нашему праотцу,

That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

что избавит нас от врагов, чтобы могли мы безбоязненно служить Ему

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

свято и праведно всю нашу жизнь.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

А ты, дитя моё, будешь называться „пророком Всевышнего”, так как ты будешь идти впереди Господа, возвещая людям Его приход.

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

Ты возвестишь людям о спасении, так как простятся им грехи их.

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

По великой милости Божьей воссияет нам новый день с небес,

To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

и Бог поможет тем, кто живёт во тьме, в страхе перед смертью, и укажет нам путь к миру».

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Ребёнок рос, креп духом и жил в пустыне до дня своего появления перед народом Израиля.
