Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us,

Немало писателей начали составлять свои повествования о событиях, которые у нас произошли —

just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,

они опираются на рассказы тех, кто с самого начала был подле Слова и служил Ему.

it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;

Вот поэтому и я, тщательно изучив всё с самого начала, решил написать об этом тебе, досточтимый Феофил,

so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

чтобы ты достоверно узнал о том, чему тебя научили прежде.

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Был в Иудее во дни царя Ирода один священник по имени Захария. Он принадлежал к череде Авии. Его жена по имени Елизавета тоже была из Ааронова рода.

They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.

И он, и она были праведны перед Богом и поступали по всем заповедям и повелениям Господним безупречно.

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.

Но ребенка у них не было, Елизавета оказалась бесплодна. Так они и вошли в преклонный возраст.

Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division,

Однажды, когда Захарии вместе с его чередой подошло время служить перед Богом,

according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

выпал Захарии жребий (так водится у священников) войти в храм Господень и совершить воскурение.

And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering.

Весь остальной народ во время воскурения молился снаружи.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.

Захарии тогда явился ангел Господень, он стоял по правую руку от жертвенника для воскурений.

Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.

Захарию смутило это видение, на него напал страх.

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John.

Ангел сказал ему:— Не бойся, Захария! Твоя молитва услышана. Жена Елизавета родит тебе сына и ты назовешь его Иоанном.

“You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

Будешь радоваться о нем и ликовать, и многим его рождение подарит радость!

“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb.

Он будет пред Господом велик, вина и хмельного не будет пить, Духом исполнится от чрева матери.

“And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.

Многих сыновей Израиля обратит он к Господу, их Богу

“It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

и сам перед Ним пройдет в духе Илии и с силой его, обратит он сердца отцов к детям, а непокорных — к праведным мыслям, чтобы народ был готов встретить Господа!

Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”

Захария спросил ангела:— Как мне узнать, что это сбудется? Я ведь уже старик, да и жена моя состарилась.

The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

Ангел сказал ему в ответ:— Я Гавриил, я стою перед Богом, и я был послан, чтобы говорить с тобой и возвестить тебе это.

“And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

А ты останешься немым, ты не сможешь говорить до того дня, когда всё это сбудется, за то, что не поверил моим словам. Они исполнятся в свое время.

The people were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering at his delay in the temple.

Народ тем временем ждал Захарию снаружи и удивлялся, что он задерживается в храме.

But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he kept making signs to them, and remained mute.

Когда он вышел, оказалось, что он не может им ничего сказать — так они поняли, что ему в храме было видение. Сам он объяснялся с людьми знаками и оставался немым.

When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home.

Когда завершились дни служения, он вернулся к себе домой.

After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying,

Вскоре после тех дней его жена Елизавета забеременела и пять месяцев скрывалась ото всех. Она говорила:

“This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men.”

— В эти дни взглянул на меня Господь, и вот что Он сотворил, чтобы снять с меня позор перед людьми!

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,

А на ее шестом месяце был послан от Бога ангел Гавриил в галилейский город под названием Назарет

to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

к девушке, которая была обручена с мужчиной по имени Иосиф из рода царя Давида. Имя той девушки — Мария.

And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

Ангел вошел и приветствовал ее:— Здравствуй! Ты благодать и радость обрела, Господь с тобой!

But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.

Она смутилась от таких слов и недоумевала, что бы такое приветствие могло означать.

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.

Ангел продолжил:— Не бойся, Мария! От Бога ты обрела благодать.

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

Ты зачнешь, выносишь и родишь Сына и ты дашь Ему имя Иисус.

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;

Он будет велик, Сыном Всевышнего Его назовут, Господь Бог Ему передаст престол Давида, праотца Его.

and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

вовеки будет царствовать Он над домом Иакова, и царству Его не будет конца.

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

Мария спросила у ангела:— Как же это произойдет, ведь я еще не была с мужчиной?

The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

Ангел сказал ей в ответ: — На тебя сойдет Святой Дух и сила Всевышнего тебя осенит, потому и родится Святое Дитя и Сыном Божьим Его назовут.

“And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month.

Вот и родственница твоя Елизавета вынашивает сына в преклонные года, месяц уже шестой — а ведь ее считали бесплодной!

“For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Ни одно слово от Бога не останется бессильным.

And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Мария сказала:— Я раба Господня. Да будет со мной, как ты сказал.И ангел ее покинул.

Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah,

В ближайшие дни Мария направилась в город в Иудейском нагорье,

and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

где жил Захария. она вошла в его дом и приветствовала Елизавету.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

И едва лишь Елизавета услышала приветствие Марии, зашевелился у ней во чреве младенец, а сама Елизавета исполнилась Святым Духом и

And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

воскликнула во весь голос: — Благословенна ты среди женщин и благословен плод в твоем чреве!

“And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?

За что же мне такое дано — Мать Господа моего пришла ко мне?

“For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.

Едва достигли моего слуха слова приветствия твоего — зашевелился, возликовал младенец во чреве моем!

“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”

Благо той, кто поверила: сбудется, что от Господа ей возвещено.

And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord,

Отвечала Мария: — Душа моя Господа величает,

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

ликует дух мой о Боге, Спасителе моем —

“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.

взглянул Он на неприметную Свою рабу, и отныне все поколения блаженной меня назовут.

“For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.

Свершил для меня великое Могучий, и свято имя Его!

“AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.

Милость Его из рода в род к тем, кто боится Его.

“He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.

Простерта Его мощная рука — Он рассеял гордецов и все замыслы их,

“He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble.

могучих с престолов низверг а неприметных вознес,

“HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS; And sent away the rich empty-handed.

кто голодал — тех насытил Он добром, кто богател — тех ни с чем отослал.

“He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy,

Принял Он Израиль как Свое дитя и о милости не забыл,

As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever.”

как обещал прежде нашим отцам, Аврааму и потомству его — навек!

And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.

Мария оставалась с Елизаветой месяца три и потом вернулась к себе домой.

Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.

Елизавете пришло время рожать, и она родила сына.

Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.

Ее соседи и вся родня узнали, какую великую милость явил ей Господь, и радовались вместе с ней.

And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.

А на восьмой день пришли делать мальчику обрезание и хотели назвать его Захарией, как звали и его отца.

But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but he shall be called John.”

Но мать возразила:— Нет, его будут звать Иоанном.

And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.”

Ей ответили:— Но ведь среди твоей родни никто не носит это имя!

And they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called.

Отца ребенка стали знаками спрашивать, какое имя он хочет ему дать.

And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, “His name is John.” And they were all astonished.

Он попросил табличку и на ней написал, ко всеобщему удивлению: «Имя ему — Иоанн».

And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.

Тотчас его уста открылись, речь вернулась и он стал благословлять Бога.

Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all the hill country of Judea.

Всех, кто был рядом, охватил трепет, о случившемся подробно рассказывали по всему Иудейскому нагорью,

All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him.

и все, кто слышал, крепко сохраняли это в памяти и спрашивали, что же выйдет из этого ребенка — ведь была на нем Господня рука.

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

А его отец Захария исполнился Святого Духа и стал пророчествовать:

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,

— Благословен Господь, Бог Израиля! Взглянул Он на Свой народ, искупление ему даровал

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant —

и из рода Давида, слуги Своего Он воздвиг Того, Кто нас спасет,

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old —

как от века возвещал через уста святых пророков Своих.

Salvation FROM OUR ENEMIES, And FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US;

Спасет Он нас от врагов, от руки всех, кто ненавидит нас,

To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant,

ради милости Своей к нашим отцам, ради памяти о завете Своем святом.

The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,

Такую клятву Аврааму Он дал, праотцу нашему,

To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

что избавит нас от руки врагов, чтобы мы смогли безо всякого страха Ему служить

In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

в святости и праведности перед Его лицом во все дни, пока живем.

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS;

А тебя, дитя мое, назовут пророком Всевышнего, и ты пройдешь пред Господом — Ему приготовить путь,

To give to His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,

дать знание о спасении народу Его, путь к прощению грехов указать.

Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,

Милосерден и благ наш Бог! Потому с высоты воззрит на нас Восход

TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

и просветит сидящих во тьме и в тени смерти, направит нас, чтобы нам по мирной дороге ступать!

And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

А младенец вырастал и укреплялся в Духе. Он жил в пустыне до того самого дня, как явился народу Израиля.
