Оскільки багато хто брався складати розповіді про події, що відбулися в нас, [1]

Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which [a]have been fulfilled among us,

і як нам передали їх ті, які з самого початку були очевидцями й служителями Слова,

just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us,

то задумав і я, дослідивши пильно все від початку, написати за порядком тобі, високоповажний Теофіле,

it seemed good to me also, having [b]had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,

щоб ти переконався в достовірності науки, якої навчився.

that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

У дні Ірода, царя Юдеї, був один священик на ім’я Захарія, з денної черги Авії, та його жінка з дочок Аарона, а ім’я її — Єлизавета.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Вони обоє були праведні перед Богом, бездоганно виконували всі Господні заповіді й настанови.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Та не мали вони дитини, бо Єлизавета була неплідна; обоє постаріли в днях своїх.

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

Одного разу, коли він за своєю денною чергою служив перед Богом,

So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division,

за звичаєм священства випало йому ввійти до Господнього храму, щоб кадити.

according to the custom of the priesthood, [c]his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

А весь народ під час кадіння молився знадвору.

And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.

І з’явився йому Господній ангел, який стояв праворуч кадильного жертовника.

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Захарія, коли побачив, жахнувся, його охопив страх.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

Та ангел промовив до нього: Не бійся, Захаріє, тому що молитва твоя почута! Твоя дружина Єлизавета народить тобі сина, і даси йому ім’я Іван.

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

І буде тобі радість та потіха, і багато хто зрадіє з його народження.

And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

Бо він буде великий перед Господом; ні вина, ні п’янкого напою не питиме; і наповниться Духом Святим ще з лона своєї матері.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

І наверне він багатьох ізраїльських синів до їхнього Господа Бога;

And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

і він ітиме перед Ним у дусі та силі Іллі, щоб навернути серця батьків до дітей, а непокірних — до мудрості праведних, щоби приготувати Господу підготовлений народ.

He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

І промовив Захарія до ангела: Із чого я про це дізнаюся? Адже я старий, та й дружина моя постаріла в днях своїх.

And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

У відповідь ангел сказав йому: Я Гавриїл, — той, хто стоїть перед Богом; мене послано говорити з тобою і благовістити тобі це.

And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you [d]these glad tidings.

І ось ти будеш мовчати і не зможеш говорити до того дня, поки це збудеться, за те, що ти не повірив моїм словам, які сповняться свого часу!

But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

Люди чекали на Захарію і дивувалися, чому він затримувався у храмі.

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple.

Коли він вийшов, то не міг говорити до них, і вони зрозуміли, що він бачив видіння в храмі, а він говорив до них знаками й залишався німим.

But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.

І коли закінчилися дні його служіння, він пішов до свого дому.

So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house.

А після тих днів його дружина Єлизавета зачала й таїлася п’ять місяців, кажучи:

Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying,

Так мені вчинив Господь у ці дні, коли зглянувся, щоби зняти мою ганьбу перед людьми.

“Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”

А на шостому місяці посланий був ангел Гавриїл від Бога до галилейського міста, названого Назаретом,

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

до діви, зарученої із чоловіком на ім’я Йосиф, із дому Давида, а ім’я діви — Марія.

to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

І, прийшовши до неї, сказав: Радій [2] , сповнена благодаті! Господь з тобою, [благословенна ти між жінками].

And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; [e]blessed are you among women!”

Вона стривожилася від цих слів і міркувала, що означало б це привітання.

But [f]when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.

Та ангел сказав їй: Не бійся, Маріє, бо ти знайшла благодать у Бога.

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

І ось, ти зачнеш в утробі й народиш Сина, і даси Йому ім’я Ісус.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.

Він буде великий і Сином Всевишнього буде названий, і дасть Йому Господь Бог престол Його батька Давида,

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

і довіку царюватиме в домі Якова, і Його царюванню не буде кінця!

And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

І озвалася Марія до ангела: Як станеться це, коли я чоловіка не знаю?

Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I [g]do not know a man?”

У відповідь ангел сказав їй: Дух Святий зійде на тебе, і сила Всевишнього тебе огорне; тому й Святе, Котре народиться, назветься Сином Божим.

And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

Ось і твоя родичка Єлизавета, хоч звуть її неплідною, і та зачала сина у своїй старості; вона вже на шостому місяці;

Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

тому що жодне слово не буває у Бога безсилим!

For with God nothing will be impossible.”

А Марія промовила: Ось, я раба Господня, нехай буде мені за словом твоїм! І ангел відійшов від неї.

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Тими днями Марія, вставши, поспішно пішла в гірську місцевість, до міста Юдиного.

Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah,

Вона ввійшла в дім Захарії і привітала Єлизавету.

and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

Коли ж почула Єлизавета привітання Марії, заворушилося немовля в її утробі. Єлизавета сповнилася Святим Духом

And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

і вигукнула гучним голосом, промовляючи: Благословенна ти між жінками і благословенний плід твоєї утроби!

Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

І звідки ж мені це, щоби до мене прийшла мати мого Господа?

But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

Бо як почула я твоє привітання, то з радощів заворушилася дитина в моїй утробі.

For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Блаженна ж та, яка повірила, що здійсниться сказане їй Господом!

Blessed is she who [h]believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

А Марія промовила: Величає душа моя Господа,

And Mary said: “My soul [i]magnifies the Lord,

і радіє дух мій у Бозі, Спасителі моїм,

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

бо Він зглянувся на покору раби Своєї. Ось, віднині блаженною зватимуть мене всі роди,

For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

бо зробив мені велике Сильний! І святе Ім’я Його,

For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name.

і милість Його з роду в рід для тих, хто боїться Його.

And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation.

Він показав силу руки Своєї, розсіяв гордих думками сердець їхніх,

He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

скинув сильних з престолів і підняв покірних,

He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly.

голодним дав достаток, а багатих відіслав ні з чим.

He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty.

Пригорнув Ізраїля, слугу Свого, щоби згадати милість,

He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy,

як і проголосив нашим батькам — Авраамові та роду його аж до віку!

As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.”

Тож Марія перебула в неї якихось три місяці й повернулася до свого дому.

And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

А Єлизаветі настав час родити; і вона народила сина.

Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son.

Почули сусіди та її родина, що Господь щедро злив Свою милість на неї, і раділи разом з нею.

When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.

Сталося, що восьмого дня прийшли обрізати дитя і хотіли назвати його ім’ям його батька — Захарією.

So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.

Та озвалася його мати й сказала: Ні, хай буде названий Іваном!

His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”

А їй сказали, що нікого немає в її родині, хто б називався цим ім’ям.

But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”

Тож знаками питали його батька, як хотів би його назвати.

So they made signs to his father — what he would have him called.

Попросивши дощечку, написав слова: Його ім’я — Іван! І всі здивувалися.

And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled.

У ту мить відкрилися його уста та його язик, і він став говорити, благословляючи Бога.

Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God.

І страх напав на всіх їхніх сусідів; і по всій гірській околиці Юдеї розповідали про всі ці події.

Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea.

Усі, хто почув це, брали до свого серця, запитуючи: Ким же буде ця дитина? Бо Господня рука була з нею!

And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Його батько Захарія наповнився Духом Святим і став пророкувати, промовляючи:

Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

Благословенний Господь, Бог Ізраїля, бо Він відвідав і викупив Свій народ,

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people,

Він підніс нам ріг [3] спасіння у домі Свого слуги Давида,

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David,

як заповідав устами святих Своїх відвічних пророків,

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began,

що спасе нас від наших ворогів і з руки всіх, хто ненавидить нас,

That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who hate us,

щоб виявити милість нашим батькам і згадати Свій святий Завіт,

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers And to remember His holy covenant,

Який дотримає клятву, котру Він дав нашому батькові Авраамові,

The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:

щоб ми визволилися з руки ворогів і без страху

To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

служили Йому у святості й праведності, доки будемо жити.

In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

І ти, дитино, будеш названа пророком Всевишнього, бо ти йтимеш перед Господом, щоби приготувати Йому дорогу;

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

щоби дати пізнати Його народові спасіння через прощення їхніх гріхів;

To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins,

аби через превелике милосердя нашого Бога, в якому нас відвідає Схід з висоти,

Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the [j]Dayspring from on high [k]has visited us;

освітити тих, які перебувають у темряві та в смертній тіні, і спрямувати наші ноги на дорогу миру!

To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

А дитина росла й міцніла духом, перебуваючи в пустелях до дня свого з’явлення перед Ізраїлем.

So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
